I picked a hell of a day to quit sniffing glue.
"Remember, politics aside, no matter the outcome we're all neighbors. That's something worth holding onto." I've been ruminating on just this thing all week. I don't give a damn who wins as long as Chloe Eudaly beats Steve Novice for city council. I've talked at least 4 people into voting for her (maybe as many as a dozen). It's a close race and Steve has spent ten times the money Chloe has. If I ever ran for office I'd shake the hand of every damn bartender and barista in the city and give them a campaign T-shirt. I liked that Chloe used comic as a campaign device.
This shit is where it matters. Your city. Your county. Your school district's spending desires. Your state reps. Your US congress members. Yep... the president matters... but everybody can take a deep breath... there are checks and balances. We'll be ok. Nothing felt quite so good as researching my US House candidates and voting for the one that resonated with me the clearest. She won't win, but damn if I wasn't really impressed with her.
I'm not sure that I agree with that. Checks and balances have been undone. They can evaporate really fast, actually. Checks and balances serve well when they are exerting gradual pressure and maintain a consensus. They do not fare well against an onslaught.but everybody can take a deep breath... there are checks and balances. We'll be ok.
I've never seen the uncut version. This is awesome. Particularly when the bird handler tries to fix the Donalds hair for him. "don't touch it."
Random fact for people who don't know. In media when you see a bald eagle calling, it's usually a voice over from a hawk. Why? Cause even though bald eagles are massive birds and true mother fuckers you don't want to mess with, their call sounds kind of wimpy, like a sea gull almost. Edit: Now I'm on Youtube playing random bird calls while the whole family hangs out on the couch. This is living.
Bald eagles are glorified fish hawks. They mostly eat dumpster trash. They often get beat up by crows and ravens and seagulls. They're lazy fucks that will hunt if they have to but more often than not they'll eat dead shit left by bears. They're the turkey vultures of the Pacific Northwest. Although one did carry away a girlfriend's mom's miniature schnauzer once. That was pretty rad. Yappy little piece of shit.
I don't think I'd want to get into a fist fight with either a bald eagle or a turkey vulture. ;) Smaller birds also have a tendency to harass the fuck out of larger birds. It's actually kind of cool to watch how even little songbirds can turn into feisty little beasts if they think their territory is being imposed upon. It's not an uncommon sight around here to see hawks flying away from anywhere from 2 to 6 smaller birds as they chase it across the sky, diving in and out.
This is true. But bald eagles are still pussies. With all this injustice, he is never in good case but like those among men who live by sharping & robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district. He is therefore by no means a proper emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our country… “I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America… He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on.” -Benjamin Fucking Franklin“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.
Here in the civilized, liberalized, modernized Pacific Northwest, we voted by mail two weeks ago and were able to confirm that our ballots had been accepted and tabulated a couple days later. There's an Excel spreadsheet on the fridge listing all of our votes in all races, from presidential down to hospital levy. There's a cheesecake my wife made, there's beer, and there will be a gluten-free pizza I will pick up for my daughter when I grab her early to go with the Pagliacci's a couple friends are bringing over. Friends on Facebook baked a sheet cake and iced the states. They have red and blue icing waiting to fill in the outlines. Unfortunately they are far away and we've got my wife's cheesecake (one of the first results of my birthday present to myself so I think I'm going to print out a state map outline or two for my daughter to color in. Polls start closing at 3pm our time. I can do this early, enjoy the company of friends, and hopefully give my daughter a memory of where she was when her parents helped elect America's first woman president. And I'm doing it here. By the time I get back to LA, all the salty republicans will have showered off their lather and the rest of us can be quietly smug. I hope.
I voted two weeks ago, too. Confirmed receipt of my vote via the web site. Today, my friend is hosting the Democratic Party PARTY at the Westin Hotel in Seattle. I was there for the two Obama wins, but not going out tonight. In fact, I probably will go home early and play Fallout: New Las Vegas. I got a new character I am training up, and that's gonna be a lot more interesting than any histrionics on TV. See y'all in a couple of days.
Holy fuck. We're doomed. E: Fuck it. Burn it down. The only silver lining is that the people that voted for him are going to be hurt the most. E2: Eight years forward, sixty years back. This is madness.
Goddammit America. You're making my girlfriend cry.
We like her. The people that are worth hanging out with, like her. This is so fucking crazy. I can't believe it. I recall G.W winning and being mortified when Gore lost the supreme court decision. This is 10x worse.
We live in a racist, sexist country and it's rearing its head in full force tonight. Guess the rest of my 20s will be spent dealing with this.
No one really cares about all those states in the middle of the country, right? And Republicans love anything defense-related? I propose ambitious nuclear testing in the midwest and southwest. Throw in the South too, I'll happily accept getting bombed for the greater good.
Or how about we as liberals demand that the DNC stop sucking Wall Street's dick and start giving half a shit about the 100 million of our fellow Americans that do not live in San Francisco and Brooklyn and Austin? As I said in IRC, this is Clinton's doing... Bill Clinton. The DNC told the middle of the country to go fuck itself, and they tuned into Fox News for 20 years. That is how you get Trump. Dean pushed the 50 state strategy and the DNC fought him. Even after he delivered the House in 2006. At least the Evangelicals hate Trump, so at least we got that to share as a starting point.
I have a lot of respect for Ammon Hennacy, Dorothy Day. Philip Berrigan, and Vernard Eller, but they're such a minority that I don't think they're relevant. I'd welcome any evidence to the contrary. At least the Evangelicals hate Trump, so at least we got that to share as a starting point.
You may very well get your wish. We fucking deserve it.
I can't. Panic attack. I haven't felt this bad since I woke up in rehab.
This little story my mom just told me is providing a very little bit of comfort. Her old boss, a big businessman, was a dyed in the wool Republican. Prototypical (R) in my eyes, knew him since I was little. He's an incredibly nice guy. More than that, he hand selected my mom to be a practice director in his firm and so single handedly supplied my family with my mother's income that was one of our lifelines through some very tough times. So I have a funny perspective of him -- utmost respect, and utmost difference of opinion. He used to tell my mom that quite literally the worst day of his life was the day Bill Clinton got elected. He thought the world would end. But it didn't. It's probably not a lot of consolation to you, because Bill Clinton and Donald Trump are demonstrably different candidates. And I agree that this is horrifying to watch. I just don't want to see you struggle.
I'm not so sure. Global economic meltdowns, clusterfuckerific sense of foreign relations, monumental Supreme Court decisions overturned and those are just off the top of my head. This is going to set humanity back at least a decade.
Don't get mad, get angry. vent, rage, etc. take a day. Then let's figure out how to fight this. Anger can be a great motivator to get off our asses and get to fighting. We have had worse presidents. We have had worse Congressmen and women. The country will survive if we don't give up on her.
Or that people are voting in favor of medical/recreational marijuana so they can get past these next four years.... /s ... I'm joking because I'm also scared. What the fuck is going on. The only silver lining is that the people that voted for him are going to be hurt the most.
I don't care if Hilary wins, a million people that voted for a literal fascist don't disappear overnight. The US let this happen. The US let it get this close. You say "we're all neighbors no matter the outcome." With all due respect, that's fucking bullshit unless you're a straight white dude who isn't really affected by the outcome of this election. I don't want people who voted for trump to be my neighbor, lol, are you fuckin' kiddin' me? This election has irrevocably changed my opinion of this country, and as I can see clearly that I'm not wanted here, I'm leaving ASAP. Tl;dr:
look man... Yep... a vocal chunk of trump supporters reflect the worst of humanity (and so does he). But a larger chunk is just tired of the status quo. They're voting against "the system", they're voting against Senator/Secretary Clinton. They want the closest thing to a republican they can find... They don't hate you. They're not all gun-toting, homophobic, xenophobic, troglodytes... blergh... now I sound like I'm trying to justify Trump or his terrible supporters... I'm most certainly not. I don't know many people who completely agree with him on everything. I could never vote for the man. I guess what I'm saying is - we've broken bread, you and I. I think there are more of us (sensible people who agree on a lot of stuff, who want to be kind and civil, and have some minor policy differences) than them (cruel, divisive, inconsiderate bigots). You and I are super different, but can sit down and have a burrito. We can live next door to each other and bemoan the constant increases in CU tuition... I promise... regardless of the outcome of this election - you're valued and wanted around here. Stick around - I like you as a neighbor.
Consider that it's not the country that let it happen, but the people. One thing I have found to be true time and again, is that people are the same all over. Their environment is what makes them ugly or not. When things are stable and easy, everyone seems swell. I'm not saying that there aren't better places to live. There probably are. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that it is due to the quality of the people. Take any place you want to move to, and look at its history. I'd argue that you aren't looking for a better place or better people, but both at a better time.I'm leaving ASAP.
But "tired of the status quo" is becoming "voting against your own self-interest" paired with a heaping dose of "fuck you and everybody else too".
I wish I could disagree with you the way others have. Unfortunately, this election has taught us that it is about race (if there was any doubt). A KKK endorsed candidate is on track to win 42-50% of the national vote. Not liking Clinton isn't an excuse. Trumps initial and enduring appeals were both to race, and I can't entertain any argument to the contrary, even from the tech crowd who love to argue otherwise ("Don't take him literally," says Thiel). Sadly, I have a lot of Trump voters in my family, but at least I already knew they were racists. It sucks worse for the people who are just finding out.
Racism is baked into the Constitution. All the 'originalists' out there (of which Trump professes to be even though he's demonstrated a lack of understanding of even the basic parts of the Constitution) are hearkening back to a time when a a black person was only 3/5 of a person (with no rights), and women rose to the level of personhood, but also with no rights. Slavery is America's original sin, and it's reflected in everything from voting rights to the Electoral College itself. What we've found out today is that the majority of the country is sick and tired of having to be PC when their true feelings are that America was, is, and will be for white men. I hope if there's a silver lining it's that some sunlight gets shed on this horrible issue. Our history of racism has a lasting legacy, and it's apparently not going anywhere anytime soon. Our history of misogyny is just as rampant, but even I thought it was mostly beaten back. Sadly, I was wrong. I'm very sad for our country right now. I'm watching Romney's former chief strategist lament his victory on PBS right now. That should tell everyone something.
...what can we even do at this point...I mean, moving forward, what do you think we can do? Because clearly what we've been doing isn't effective.
No matter what happens. No matter how you feel about the results, embrace this mentality with every neighbor. You can't lift others up if you don't reach your hand out for them to grab. Similarly, they can't lift you up if you keep your hand to yourself. :)You and I are super different, but can sit down and have a burrito. We can live next door to each other and bemoan the constant increases in CU tuition... I promise... regardless of the outcome of this election - you're valued and wanted around here. Stick around - I like you as a neighbor.
Consider the alternative angle, the millions of voices that say they do value you and your contributions. The voices that say they want you here, happy and safe. I'm not gonna lie. I'm very unhappy with where I live right now myself. I've seen a lot of ugliness come out and it weighs on me. I've also seen a lot of heart. If I don't like the outcome of this election, I'm not leaving moving out of this country off the table. That said, hardship and adversity is a part of life, it'll be with you in one form or another where ever you end up. Personal strength though, generosity, commitment to the people around you, they'll only be with you if you choose to embrace them. Be angry at your neighbors. That's okay. Leave or stay, that's okay. But never stop being neighborly, because once you do, you'll find yourself thinking in similar ways as the very people that frustrate you and you'll be allowing the hardships of others to multiply.
I don't think people outside of Detroit can appreciate how significant this is that it's even on the ballot. Behind Trump being defeated, it's the thing I care about most this year. Polling wasn't very widespread on this issue, so no one really knows what the people think about it. I have seen a lot more pro signs (I don't think there's an organized opposition), but "higher taxes" speaks for itself too often to many voters. I'm optimistic though. I will cry with joy the first day I get to ride a transport system to work.
I can trump top that. We're trying to get a Single Payer System here.
I can respect someone who honestly doesn't believe it will work. But I think they're wrong. Conservatives regularly make the argument "it just won't work in the US, we're too big" (despite countries like Sweden having vast swathes of frozen wasteland). But you know what? Colorado is about the size of any given European country, and with a strong tech economy. I want to see what happens. Worst case scenario, we can repeal it if it explodes, and the only thing lost is some spending money from a few well-to-do middle class people like myself who can spare it. But, practicality notwithstanding, as a Christian, I'll almost always vote for social things. I believe Jesus' #1 physical ministry was to the poor. I don't have to tell you, there are countless verses in both the Old and New Testaments commanding helping the poor. And some pretty dire consequences for not doing it in Matthew 25. When I lived in Texas, most of the Conservative Christians I knew used the argument, "It's not the government's job, it's the church's job." You know what? The church isn't doing its job. And at the end of the day, I don't care who does it, as long as it gets done.
amen. I've switched sides - to being SUPER in favor of a single payer system. I was just embarrassingly uninformed about the current initiative. I was scrambling last night to get educated about it. Frankly - I was surprised by how little I had heard of it - nothing on CPR, nothing from my employer, no neighborhood signs.... just nothing. Weird. Anyway - shame on me for not catching it sooner. I'm still happy with the way I voted - but don't like being that uninformed with a pen in hand and ballot in front of me.The church isn't doing its job. And at the end of the day, I don't care who does it, as long as it gets done.
I voted yes on our local school referendum. Yes for them to be allowed more funding. I don't have kids, but how could I say no?
Me and my mom voted this morning. I have a juicy quote ready to post to facebook if and hopefully when Hillary wins. I've been saving it for a month now. "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing, only after they've exhausted all other options." I hope I don't jinx it.
If the Cubs can win the World Series after all the jinxing they've had, I think Clinton can pull out the big win today even with your prepared post.
Just voted. And I actually researched all the city and county candidates first.
Wow. You bastard. Quick on the draw, because I added the "just kidding," quickly thereafter.
The time has come. The time is now. Just go. Go. GO! I don't care how. You can go by cow. Donald J. Trump, will you please go now! You can go on skis. You can go in a hat. But please go. Please! You can go by bike. You can go on a Zike-Bike if you like. If you like you can go in an old blue shoe. Just go, go, GO! Please do, do, DO! Donald J. Trump, will you please GO NOW! You can go by fish. You can go in a Crunk-Car if you wish. If you wish you may go by lion's tail. Or stamp yourself and go by mail. Donald J. Trump! Don't you know the time has come to go, Go, GO! Please, Donald J.! You might like going in a Zumble-Zay. ...or broomstick. OR You can go by camel in a bureau drawer. You can go by Bumble-Boat... ...or jet. I don't care how you go. Just GET! Get yourself a Ga-Zoom. You can go with a................. BOOM! Donald, Donald, Donald! Will you leave this room! I don't care HOW. Donald J. Trump! Will you please GO NOW! The time had come. SO... Donald WENT.Go Trump!

I said GO and GO I meant....
Historical trivia: on July 30, 1974, The Washington Post published, with Dr. Seuss' permission, replacing Marvin K. Mooney with Richard M. Nixon, the entire poem. Ten days later Nixon resigned.
I can't believe this is happening. This is something unexpected.
On the topic of funnies, I was linked to this email FW: chain November, we will witness history being made. Presidential election, it will be the first time in history that two U.S .Presidents have slept with each other! If Donald Trump wins the U.S. Presidential election, it will be the first time in history that a billionaire moves into public housing vacated by a black family. Is this a great country or what?Subject: Fwd: Fwd: Smile for you
Regardless of who wins the Presidential election this
If Hillary Clinton wins the U.S.
It's fine you guys even though this country is sounding itself in gasoline and lighting the match it's fine because I'm breathing! I'm breathing so we're all good. Nothing is fucked at all, totally not. So anyways here's my game plan trump or not: I graduate may. If I start looking in January I can find a job in Kuwait in June. My other option is taking my buddy's offer to write document in Kyoto. This throws a wrench into my teaching certificate plan, but I can compensate for that With immediate pocket change and coming back here in the summers to take the classes/possibly take them online. Then I teach at an AIS in any country that takes me. If you asked me honestly (and I'm being honest because I found out the bottle I grabbed out of the fridge was NOT flavored water) I'd prefer the Japan plan (japlan). I liked it when I was there, no one looked at me weird or called me a nigger, no one wants to get married or have kids, and there's a sector devoted to Weeb shit exclusively. Fuck it may as well be heaven. Sayonara bitchessss
There is nothing to be proud of in a nation under a Trump presidency. I like you a lot rd, but come on.
Wilson was a flat out racist. We survived. Taft was a do-nothing. We survived. Grant allowed massive corruption under his nose. We survived. Nixon.... We survived. I'm angry, gonna get sleep. Gonna sit in meetings and shit all day, then come back with a clearer perspective on what is going to happen and start looking for the people who are going to stand and fight for my values and help as I can. There are a ton of angry people out there that are also hurting and being left behind. That is how you get Trump. Not sure how to work on changing this direction, but I am willing to try. It's all we can do.
How do you help, though? I asked you this elsewhere. How do you do it? This is my second election cycle where I've been able to vote. We're going to be facing a Republican Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branch, and all the pissed off people voting for these Republicans are halfway across the world from me, effectively. How am I supposed to reach those people or help reach those people from 1,000 miles away. That's the question that's been eating away for hours now.
I called Feingold's campaign office and thanked him for running. I sent email to Senator Wyden. I sent the EFF an extra $250 today. Find the liberal wing of the Democratic party, follow then on the social brain cancer crap, look for groups that are going to fight the ACA dismantling and the new tax hand outs.
I guess...i don't see how any of that contributes to changing the tide that is middle America and rural America, where the divide is. I can support all the left leaning liberal institutions in the city I'm in exactly because they exist here and we benefit from that...but everywhere else...
Stop with the doom and gloom shit. If half the stuff they say about Trump is true, we have a hard road ahead of us and that kind of mentality isn't gonna make it any easier. So yes. Be proud. Be proud of who you are as a person. Be proud of your friends and family. Be proud of your job and the work that you do. Be proud of your desire to be good and honest and hard working. As soon as you let go of any of that, it suddenly becomes a lot harder to care about yourself and the world around you. Or mope like a quitter. That's fine too if that's what you're really into.
I'm well ahead of you on that one.As soon as you let go of any of that, it suddenly becomes a lot harder to care about yourself and the world around you.
I want to meet the people who are earnestly voting for Trump. And I want to have a reasonable discussion with them over a cup of coffee. And they'll go home and I'll go home, and maybe by some miracle we'll find some common ground we didn't think was there.
I just wanted to say we should give a round of applause to this years' candidates' scandals. Every election cycle necessitates the manufacturing of distractionary hits on each candidate. The past few cycles were incredibly lackluster in this area, though. McCain too old? Eh. Obama not a US citizen? Oh come on. Swiftboat Veterans for Justice? Kerry didn't get quite enough shrapnel to deserve that purple heart? Oh. My. God. Laaaaaaaaaaame. But this year? National security leaks? Credible rape and sexual assault claims? Charity fraud? What a treat. That's not even counting all the crap Trump said that hardly shook his campaign. To think that once upon a time the "Dean Scream" was enough to sink a candidate.
I haven't seen any that wasn't too talk about it anyway. I'm closer to conservative than most people who post here and I still voted for her as pres, and a mix down-ballot.
My wife went to our polling place on the way to work, and it took her about half an hour start to finish. I hadn't had breakfast yet, so am going after work. I'm kind of worn out, so as nervous as I've been about the outcome, I'm kind of spent. I'm not going to lie, part of me would enjoy watching Trump fuck everything up.
That looks yummy. I've already started on my new years resolution early and have given up drinking, which is hard because I'd have a beer with every dinner and every now and again a shot of jack or something for a bedtime snack. I've been drinking O'Douls when the urge for beer hits, but damn is that shit so not satisfying. It's really not even worth it. Time to switch to fancy pops instead.
Combinations of fruit, club soda, and bitters make good non-alcoholic[1] drinks. Very refreshing. 1. Most bitters have some amount of alcohol, so they might not meet a moral definition of non-alcoholic, but as dash of bitters is not much more than you might absorb just rinsing with Listerine.
I wasn't a "drink most nights with dinner" drinker, but I'd have three beers any time I was out. And I used to go out three or four nights a week. Nothing past midnight and never heavy drinking, just live music. But ever since I cut back I feel a lot better. My new routine is one or two drinks once every month or two. For me it works really well. I hope your resolution works as well for you as mine did for me.
Well, if it makes you feel better, it's not really worth the money. Smooth on the front end, but then just goes down fairly bland.
