"Huh, I only have a few more days with my family, and I haven't packed anything at all. I should probably sew a pea coat." The pattern I used, for any interested parties. Polka dot flannel lining, wool exterior. Still needs some finishing touches (hems, buttons, etc). My most ambitious project yet, happy with how it turned out. Going to make one for my boyfriend this week, which leads me to: Relocation 2: ECLECTIC BUGABOO I've shipped my shit, I've winterized the beehive, I've cleaned my room, and I'm going to be in Portland in about 36 hours. Not much to say apart from that I am extremely excited - to be out of CT, to be with friends, to be able to bike again, to take my life off hiatus, to find out where cgod's coffee place is, etc etc etc.
A Brother 2600i, was $80 when I bought it. No complaints. Edit: named "Sharon", after the drag queen
I used to think gingham was really old fashioned, so much so that I don't know how it started sneaking into my wardrobe. I'm a huge fan of tartan patterns though. There have been times where I'd go on JoAnn's website and just browse their fabric.
Is this a euphemism for something, or do you have a place where actual bees live, and if so, what does winterizing involve?I've winterized the beehive
Well I definitely want it to be a euphemism now, but alas, it is very real. I have a hive in my backyard, and I just needed to get it ready for winter so my dad doesn't have to deal with them. Basically, it just involves plugging the entrance hole with straw so that the bees don't try to keep foraging if it gets warm in the winter (fun fact: the bees basically all leave the hive as a pack to take a group shit mid-winter, so you have to keep a small part open). Then you have to fill up a feeder with syrup/meds for them so they don't starve in the winter. Then it's just checking for mold/pests/protecting them from mice etc.
we have some amount of time before he answers to speculate on what it could be a euphemism for i am having trouble thinking of anything pg edit: ninja'd. i remember when hubski didn't have nearly enough constant traffic to really worry about being ninja'd. huh.
Passed my first semester classes! Got my physical fitness score up pretty high and close to a 300 (technical max) which is my goal for now. I'm starting my courseload to major in Econ a semester early thanks to a surprisingly quick and helpful Registrar. Will hold myself to a higher standard than "if I pass Chem 101 I'm good" next semester, but for now, a couple all nighters in finals week did the trick and fuck it, keep rolling! By the way, all nighters in college are way more taxing in college than high school. I crashed in the 3rd quarter of my chem final and had to run outside in the cold and take a lap to stay awake. Whew.
Oh yeaah, forgot about that awesome place! it will be done.
I may have some sort of training then, I'll follow up when I get back from break.
Thank god I'm leaving Upstate New York for another year.
Is there a term for that? There has to be a term for that. Beyond, you know, "being an asshole".
Living in MA is the only place where I was consistently happy about the area itself, actually. Even the two work visits this year were stellar.
Yeahhh if I was doing that, wonderful. But I wasn't. Being stuck in the middle of the state for five days is a nice reminder of why you wanted to get away so badly in the first place. It's a time capsule, this part of the world.
i got a "traffic citation" for calling someone on my cell phone thing while driving on the interstate in upstate new york i had been dueling the cop for thirty miles, tantalizing him by going about ten over, never quite crossing the line. then i pulled out my cell phone and violated natural law and he just couldn't restrain his lil behatted self anymore we went through the usual cat and mouse where he tried to get me to admit to being a stain on the rug of humanity and finally he said well, i'll ignore the speeding (ha!) and just write you a thing for being on your cell phone. i indicated that i cared not, he insisted i would see a maximum fine of 50, we both moved on with our lives, mine enjoyable, his soulless anyway my ticket came in the mail and it was 250 the end fuck upstate new york in the west we drive with our cell phones in spring-loaded holsters ready to rumble
Sorry, raisin, I wasn't talking about Kanata, Ontario. I was playfully referring to Canada by its original name. The name “Canada” likely comes from the Huron-Iroquois word “kanata,” meaning “village” or “settlement.” In 1535, two Aboriginal youths told French explorer Jacques Cartier about the route to kanata; they were actually referring to the village of Stadacona, the site of the present-day City of Québec.
Eventually the name morphed into "Canada."
'twer all of the above by the way i meant to send this to you: http://torontolife.com/city/life/jim-estill-the-man-who-saved-200-syrian-refugees/ was topic of discussion, i recall, at the Meetup
I got pulled over for a busted license plate light and the cop thought I was giving him lip when I said I had forgotten to change my address on my drivers license. Paid $125 because 'Sorry, I forgot to do that, I've been living on my own for less than a month.' is sass to an Ingham County Sheriff. Paid another $125 because my cellphone was turned on and sitting in the passenger seat. Went in to pay the ticket and the guy behind the counter whistled and said 'you must have really pissed him off, I've never seen these citations once and I've been here almost 20 years.'
I was once cited for turning left at a green light into the inside lane while an oncoming car turned right at a green light into his inside lane. In other words, we started out coming at each other, then ended up driving alongside each other. I took it to court. The citing officer showed up and spent twenty minutes trying to find the law he had written me up for as we all sat there in silence. After an interminably long time he said "well, your honor, I'm sure it's in here somewhere" at which point the judge said "good enough for me." I crossed my arms and signed. The judge said "do you want to spend the weekend in jail, young man?" I would have said "absolutely, your honor, I'd love to see you explain this one" except I had to take the SAT the next day.
Ah, I can see that. I was in Newcomb for two days, and that area reminds me a lot of rural Wisconsin where I grew up. Beautiful but, as you said, a time capsule.
-Mother in law broke her shoulder ice skating over Thanksgiving. She went in for surgery Dec 23. Spent Xmas trying not to take too many Oxycodone. - Wife went down with flu Dec 25. Slept pretty much until the 27th. - Daughter went down with the flu Dec 26. She's up, but we're letting her watch Miyazaki all day. - Despite that I've been through 36 eggs, 5 lbs of onions, 3 lbs of potatoes, two bags of carrots, a bag of celery, 2 cups of whipped cream, 2 bags of cranberries and a pomegranate in the past three days. Also a 15lb turkey, which was organic, which wasn't heritage, and had about as much flavor as a ream of copy paper and still cost sixty fucking dollars. - Got my daughter a big girl bed for her birthday (early Dec). My wife thought it would be "fun" to paint it. So. That's two boxes of IkeaSticks that need to be sanded, primed (2 coats) and painted brilliant blue (4 coats and counting) and I'm only one box of IkeaSticks in. Also, things look like shit because (A) 4-year-olds, even at their very best, aren't all that professional (B) JESUS FUCKING CHRIST FUCK SHERWIN WILLIAMS IN THE NECK. Four fucking coats of paint and I'm still seeing primer through it? You ever tried to control latex drips on pine with a brush through four fucking coats with a 4-year-old? On the plus side, the occupancy permit is in hand. We're permit #7 for the year. Yeah. 7. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go add coat #5 to this fucking bed.
IMO i'd go heritage before I went organic. I've found Organic doesn't really say anything about flavour, and farms that focus on Heritage breeds may not always be "organic" but they definitely treat their animals with a lot more respect. In contrast, a farm can be letter of the law organic and treat their animals like garbage and produce awful meat. Also, if you're going over say 12 lbs, you're probably better off getting two smaller birds. If you do choose a big bird, Spatchcocking is your friend when it comes to whole poultry. Heck, even just cutting it down the middle to get it to lay flat is a huge plus.a 15lb turkey, which was organic, which wasn't heritage, and had about as much flavor as a ream of copy paper and still cost sixty fucking dollars.
I'm a big fan of heritage breed turkeys. The issue is I got home Dec 1. My daughter's birthday was a week later. Two days after that we were in Alberta for a week. Two days after that my mother-in-law was in surgery. Two days after that was christmas. I don't know if you've tried hunting down heritage turkeys but it's a pain in the ass even at Thanksgiving; yeah, Whole Foods has them but they're Mary's Turkeys and when you ask them what breed, they say "heritage white." Uhhh... And then you realize that sure - you want to do two six pound turkeys. Have you ever tried to find a 6lb turkey domestically? They don't really exist. I almost did a goose this year but the family totally shot it down. As far as spatchcocking, I mean, stuffing is nature's perfect food. Granted, nobody in my family eats that either. Maybe next year I'll do burgers.
my family does homemade pizza for christmas dinner - get the kids involved putting on toppings.
I agree with coffeesp00ns spatchcock and cook at 500 degrees. A 10lb turkey will be done in right around an hour. Cook the stuffing separately. Why? Thermodynamics, a 10lb turkey with stuff is effectively 3+ in thick to the center spatchcocked its less than 1. It cooks more evenly because the heat doesn't need to penetrate that far in and there is less of thermal gradient. Also at 500 degress you get that crispy skin (assuming you separate it from the body dry brine it with salt and let it dry it first) As for Heritage birds, I agree with you cant get a true "Heritage" bird even at Central market or Whole foods. The birds that are Labeled Heritage are actually some sort of cross between a Heritage breed and a factory farm breed. The only way to get a real one is to either Mail order or order/pickup at the Ballard Farmers market and then they are quite pricy.
Hey Pubs - I'm still on vacation in Canada with my wife and dog. We are now in Victoria, in a swanky loft right downtown, in an alley off Wharf Street and Yates. Goddamn blissful, it is. We might put on pants and go out and get a coffee. It is 10:45 AM, after all... Aaaahhhh... vacation....
Being home kinda sucks. Not much to do, and everyone and everything interesting is at least a 15 minute drive away (which is even worse with only a learner's permit). Still haven't slept well since Thanksgiving; feel tired all day most days. Getting 12 hours a night but only after a few hours lying awake and then waking up 3 or 4 times every night. Started drinking coffee and it kind of helps, but it's still hard to get much done when you're sleeping from 3am to 3pm. ----- Ran into an old friend at a cafe randomly a few days ago. She was there with friends I don't know, I was there with friends she kind of knew a few years ago. She had to leave immediately, though. Back when we were in middle school together I had a crush on her and she had a crush on me but neither of us committed to making that obvious. Only found out later. Honestly I would still go out with her but the combination of our long friendship and millennial dating standards make asking her out nigh impossible. I tried to one time like two years ago. We ended up mini golfing in the rain, walking to P Terry's, getting milkshakes. Mutual friend told me after she thought it was purely platonic. E: Any advice here is appreciated. ----- I'm writing a Krampus-themed RPG. Made my own mechanics because fuck buying 26 DnD books and still only being a decent DM. Hoping to play it with some friends on Friday. ----- Got grades back from last semester. Straight 4.0-- A A A A. None of this 2 A+, 1 A, 1 B+ bullshit like first semester last year. I honestly find it kind of weird when people are like impressed by my GPA or congratulate me on it. Like, all I do is just do the work in my classes. And be born a fast learner, I guess? I definitely don't work as hard as some of my friends who have worse GPAs than me. But people are always like, "wow, you have a 3.95? that's incredible!" I'm just doing me, bro. E: I guess it's partly because getting good grades isn't fulfilling for me. If I get a 4.0 it's like, yeah, that was kind of expected. I've gotten literally 2 Bs since elementary school. But as an example, when I'm playing CSGO, and I get to a new rank, it feels awesome. Because when I started I was dogshit. And I'm still dogshit, but less so, because I put in 1000+ hours of practice and play, and actual hard work got me where I am. Not being born smart or whatever bullshit.
Bullshit I'm Reading Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda. I don't know why. Norse/Scandinavian stuff is interesting to me all of the sudden. I was talking to Dala the other day about reading aloud to each other as mentioned on here and she likes the idea. She's a huge fan of the "Myths and Legends" podcast and I told her some of these original works can be fun to read, although a chore. It wasn't until I started reading this particular one myself that I remembered how much a chore it can actually be. These things are often dense with information yet light with fluffy details. How poets and storytellers of the past could remember these things is a mystery to me. As an aside, anyone who's read The Hobbit might recognize a few names in these verses . . . Nye, Nide, Nodre, Sudre, Austre, Vestre, Althjof, Dvalin, Na, Nain, Niping, Dain, Bifur, Bafur, Bombor, Nore, Ore, Onar, Oin, Mjodvitner, Vig, Gandalf, Vindalf, Thorin, File, Kile, Fundin, Vale, Thro, Throin, Theck, Lit, Vit, Ny, Nyrad, Rek, Radsvid. But the following are also dwarfs and dwell in the rocks, while the above-named dwell in the mould: Draupner, Dolgthvare, Hor, Hugstare, Hledjolf, Gloin, Dore, Ore, Duf, Andvare, Hepte, File, Har, Siar. But the following come from Svarin's How to Aurvang on Joruvold, and from them is sprung Lovar. Their names are: Skirfer, Virfir, Skafid, Ae, Alf, Inge, Eikinskjalde, Fal, Froste, Fid, Gunnar. Shit I'm Playing Dala and I are sharing a character on Skyrim, keeping a journal next to the bed where we record what we did and why, so either one of us can pick up the game and know what's going on. We've only been doing it since Christmas, but so far it's been fun. Shit I'm Doing This Week Meeting up with an old coworker for lunch today. I'm looking forward to seeing her, we like to complain to each other about jobs and job hunting and it's fun. Later this week, I'm heading down to the comic shop to purchase all of the books backing up my pull list. I need them in my library for reasons, but I'm feeling kind of blah about comics lately. And movies. And video games. And music and books and a lot of stuff. I kind of just want to go to the park and sit. Weirdness Three different people, none who know each other, have all independently shared with me this month of their dreams of selling everything they own and buying a van or RV and going across the country aimlessly. One, that sounds totally awesome. Two, I'm half tempted to get them all talking to each other just to see what happens. Three, I'm curious as to how they all independently came to this idea on their own, at the same time. Is there a book or movie coming out that I don't know about? Edit: Also, my internet time has dropped down significantly. I'm almost never reading the news now, nor am I on Reddit anymore. My Hubski comments have dropped by a third, same with my posts and shares. I'm trying to get out and do more, but it doesn't feel like I'm getting anywhere. General thoughts on the matter are more than appreciated. And these, says the Vala, are the names of the dwarfs:
I actually recommend Grettir's Saga without reservations.
Your goal here is pretty vague. What are you trying to achieve and what do you mean by 'do more'? Perhaps if you quantify what you're trying to achieve, you might feel more like you're accomplishing it? I'm just thinking out loud here, but if you were going out more where there's no internet access, wouldn't that automatically lead to less internet time? Your approach seems to be (and maybe I'm wrong here) that if you decrease your internet time then you'll automatically get out more. I don't think it works in that direction. I think it works in the other direction.Edit: Also, my internet time has dropped down significantly. I'm almost never reading the news now, nor am I on Reddit anymore. Got my new desk finally, Two monitors, lots of extra desk space, enough filing cabinet space for my few hundred patient files. Once I have everything set up the way that I like I'll take a pic. Spending the morning moving files, cleaning, throwing things away, doing inventory on my various study supplies. Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend, and has a safe and fun New Years Eve :]
Let's see it! If you feel comfy, I'd love a workstation picture. I'm always tinkering.
I cannot thank you enough for the blog. Thanks Again. Keep writing. i follow you now
A post by this user has been marked "spam." His bio (translated) says, "Good executive training program to do more than detect leaks." Given alaamiahclean's comments are all pretty much the same, it must be a bot, eh? But a bot with a limited vocabulary. Sigh. Aren't there more interesting and creative bots out there to spam us? mk

goobster helped me out a ton recently to figure out how to make better videos for my youtubz :D So I decided to follow his advice about making the video more personal and talking more about other youtubers and such Released a video yesterday about a crazy night in Vilnius a couple years ago: I think it turned out well, I'll have to make more of these stories videos!
A couple more weeks of shipping people's returns and then work should be more or less back to normal. Quicker than that for me. I have a strategically placed vacation coming up. I've never moved during a time when vacations are able to be scheduled, this should make things so much easier. I think I'm going to buy some new bags for my bike. I've hit the upper limits of what I can carry enough times now to recognize I need more volume. I'm at ~37 liters right now, but the setup I'm looking at would be 60 to 72 liters-ish. I kind miss using kitty litter buckets, but they're also a pain to carry up stairs. They're also a pain if you need to fit something that requires removing the entire lid. I'm also considering picking up a messenger bag instead of using a backpack, but I'm not too sure how practical that would be to use with a hydration bladder. _____ EDIT I've also been kicking around the idea of checking out the IWW. Ironically enough, the local branch is in the place I'm moving away from, but the only presence I've seen of them is where I am moving to.
