Who is on your guest list and why?
Whoa way to just to ignore the maternal side of your family. I'm telling your mom.
I suspect that if the moms and grandmoms were there, it would change the conversation. mk I'd love to see you fictionalize that conversation. Do you know anything about your great, great great, or great great great grandfathers? I can imagine the life of one of my great grandfathers. I have a biography of him. He had 13 children. One of them was my paternal grandmother, another was my maternal grandfather. In the biography, not a word - not a single word mentions his family life.
Very little about that great grandfather, and nothing about the other two. It would make for a great short story. I'd write it so that the great great great was the least conservative of us all. My 2-yo daughter and her 3-yo second cousin have a cute affinity for each other, and my wife an I were just talking on that topic last night. I recall reading a study that showed that it isn't as genetically risky as commonly thought. I believe it takes multiple loops before the risks become significant.mk I'd love to see you fictionalize that conversation. Do you know anything about your great, great great, or great great great grandfathers?
One of them was my paternal grandmother, another was my maternal grandfather.
He may well have been a wild guy. Most of the 19th century was a revolutionary time. If he was around in the early 19th, he may have been on the streets cheering while Napoleon's armies passed through on the way to Russia. Location, location, location. Do the K'ski's have a village from whence they came.
I discovered that whence/from whence is a topic of heated debate in many circles.I feel like you would want me to.
Indeed you know me well, at least the part of me that is standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door from whence I came.
It's a great answer, while I'm heading back to Michigan soon, I will make the effort to go out to lunch with my father and his father. I probably would not have considered setting this up had it not been for your comment. Thank you for that. Unfortunately, it's amazing how much I take for granted -It's shameful. Edit: my family is here for Easter staying with us. This morning my dad used his truck to drive me to the dump to throw away some old boxes etc. My favorite part of the holiday weekend thus far was just talking with my dad in the truck, driving to the dump. Last night we got my dad to play "Cards against Humanity" with us. Hearing him say words like "queef" were pretty damned amusing. -he won the game.
What an interesting answer. Problem, my line of fathers would all speak Russian, and I'm like 5% fluent.
I'm afraid there will have to be two dinner parties. Attendees can mix and match: 1. mk to talk about brain cells 2. b_b He promised never to go to dinner parties, but then he came to one, thus pulling another b_b. 3. insomniasexx for fun 4. theadvancedapes cuz I think he'd have fun 5. thenewgreen for musical entertainment (and ButterflyEffect and cW) (and their bands) 6. _refugee_ for poetry 7. humanodon -- to talk to about conflict resolution and generally watch him stop the fights that are bound to happen 8. flagamuffin for funny offhand comments 9. BLOB_CASTLE for jazz and definitely NOT dumpster catering 10. wasoxygen to just generally give me a hand with the rabble omg, and elizabeth for photography, and ecib for enthusiasm and 20-30 others of you. I have room for this dinner party. Maybe when hubski has its 10th birthday?
exactly, I recall you having a very bad time at parties. -- I think you would not suck at this party though. hubski is about the same in person as we are on line, except taller -- yes we are taller in person, especially b_b If you think we could pry you away from gaming for the party, I'll put you in for wry observation.
What do you mean "again"? FOLLOW FALLOW I have to leave my follows fallow for a short while for crop rotation: a fallow feed is a feed that has been plowed and harrowed but left unsown for a period in order to restore its fertility as part of a crop rotation or to avoid surplus production. I fallowed everyone. I wanted to clear the slate as so many of my followees had gone AWOL from hubski. I'm going to start again with a protocal, criteria, maybe even an algorithm. Previously I followed for self-esteem of the followee. I am going through a personal crisis and have to stop enabling.
Badged! I highly suggest cleaning out the following list from time to time and starting anew. It's actually fun and it shows me who I actually feel an affinity for.
Note ButterflyEffect I am responding to my own comment: Should I change the words "crop rotation" in the above definition to "crap rotation"?
I only unfollow people that respond to their own comments.
I'll fight with Humanodon just to throw a monkey wrench in lils design. See you all in 10 years, but hopefully much sooner.
I'm calling out insomniasexx for a throwdown.
Watch out. I fight dirty and I always get my way. :)
eightbitsamurai, will you back me up with some brass knuckles?
_refugee_ No one can (or should ever attempt to) stand up against two women who are incredibly strong, occasionally psychotic, undeniably sexy and most certainly crass & clever. Cower in fear, my dear lads. We will sync our periods, don our push-up sports bras, and fight at the next full moon.
Yes. Let's live together. I can move across the country, I can. We can work out together and you can tell me the mysterious ways of the thigh gap. Edit: although I'm on that magic kind of medicine that makes my period come once every three months, and you should be, too. Because once a month? Fuck that
Dumpster food is probably better than most catering.
I have a "thing" here now! It's nice compared to other forums where i'm usually just a faceless comment :) I'm not even so much into photography in life but i've been taking more pictures lately when traveling. Now I can't wait for photochallenges just so I can show off :P Seems like a fun party, i hope one day I actually make it to a meetup.
I can eat dinner twice! Though I'm interested in resolving conflict, the field of conflict resolution is actually more concerned with conflict engagement and management. So to put it another way, conflict (including fighting) is something that can actually be useful in advancing relationships and producing positive outcomes for those involved. I feel like hubski is already fairly open to that, at least compared to other internet communities.
Right now any 5 senators who want to explain how that whole thing works would be fantastic. Roman senators that is. I'm in the process of working on a Model UN crisis committee on the topic of the second punic wars, and the experience of meeting roman republic senators couldn't be any better than right now. (Just as a side note, it's great to be returning to hubski, especially if anyone remembers me, there's what, 10,000 of you by now?)
five copies of myself, the dinner party will be capped off with some fantastic group sex #classicanswer
-Abraham Lincoln --A leader among leaders with a great moral conscious and the bravery to do what's right
-John Lennon --A musician that I find most intriguing and a man that died before his time.
-My Maternal Grandfather --A judge who I've always looked up to and wish that I would've got more time to talk to him after I matured. My mother always tells me how much I remind her of him.
-Einstein --A man who was able to predict so much about the way the universe works even before his theories were provable. He would be ecstatic to know that we have proved General Relativity and probably confounded and intrigued about the insights we have made about Quantum Mechanics
-Pick one: Cleopatra/Margaret Thatcher/Susan B Anthony --I'm interested in inviting a woman to the table that wielded great power to get their perspective on how the world works. I want to know how they became so influential and how they think they used their influence in the right and wrong way. In fact I would like to have a table that is half women half men because it would be unfair to this gathering of the minds to only represent half the population, but since I do admire the first 4 men in a unique way it prevents me from doing this.
Runner Ups: Marilyn Monroe, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Ghandi, Marie Curie, Rachel Carson, James Madison, George Washington, Ghengis Khan, Napoleon, Oprah Winfrey, Teddy Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie, Nikola Tesla, Stephen Colbert, My Paternal Grandfather, My Paternal Grandmother, My Brothers, My Parents, Anyone from another solar system capable of communication. Runner Ups Inspired by mal-2 picks:
Aristotle, Plato
Abraham, Mohammad, and Jesus. They definitely need to have a little pow-wow and their followers could do to get it from the horse's mouth. I could only take so much of that though so I'd round it out with Leonardo Da Vinci and Carl Sagan so I wouldn't have to hit the bar early. I think there would be some entertaining discussion and we could put a lot of shit to rest while we're at it. Of course, we don't know the technical degree of zealotry or lack-of from the Big Three, so the dinner party could go to shit, but Carl has a pretty calming voice and a lot of patience so I think we'd be fine.
- Alan Turing One of my heroes. He not only is responsible for computer science, he endured incredible persecution for his sexuality. I would love to ask him about what life was like back then, and show him just how far his ideas have been carried. - Robert Anton Wilson He was very influential in my life, helping me to escape fundamentalist thinking patterns and open my mind to new ideas. I believe he was absolutely before his time and had a fascinating mind. I really wish I could have seen him lecture or met him before he died. Plus he'd make the dinner party a lot more fun. - Aristotle His ideas shaped history, and his writing shows a clarity and precision of thought that truly amazes me. Hopefully the magic of this dinner party allows him to speak English, besides just being resurrected. - Eleanor Roosevelt Perceptive and strong, she had an inspiring spirit that doesn't exist any more in the public sphere. I'd love to hear her advice about today. - Buckminster Fuller One of the first to realize just how important and game-changing technology is and how it relates to our purpose and position in the universe. I'd love to pick his brain and hear his impression of the modern world.
JFK. Man or myth? And why the sudden change of heart during his presidency, leading up to his death? -H.D. Thoreau and Ghandi. Survival-advice and tips: also, how does one build their own weaving tools? Could use an even more minimalistic approach. Also: how to non-comply with politeness in a day and age where standing up for your rights gets you arrested and beaten. - Nicola Tesla. Discussing the possibility for a field-experiment. Want to see if the man was right or not. You discovered wireless electricity? Show me how you do it. -Atilla. For travel-tips and discussing bowyering and archery techniques as well as horseback-riding with subjects such as "How to Avoid Getting Tossed Around on The Horse?", "Aaaargh! How Do Stop This Thing?" and "Why Horses Should Be Fitted With Brakes". Want to figure out why he thought sluaghtering and pillaging was a good thing to do instead of hiring a campaign-team with a couple of spin-doctors.
Complete speculation here, but campaign teams usually operated on the premise of 'If you don't let me have power, I'll pillage, rape, and kill you all'. This is part of why I would not want to have dinner with Attila, and also why I'm glad that if I'm female I exist NOW and not THEN.Want to figure out why he thought sluaghtering and pillaging was a good thing to do instead of hiring a campaign-team with a couple of spin-doctors.
Siddhartha Guatama, Einstein, Epictitus, Bill Hicks, George Carlin
Rosalind Franklin, Christiane Nusslein-Volhard, Eric Wieschaus, John Gurdon, and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi. EDIT: I should probably explain why. Rosalind Franklin discovered the structure of DNA (Watson basically stole her shit). She would have gotten part of the Nobel Prize had she not died from ovarian cancer significantly in advance of the prize's awarding. Christiane Nusslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus got a Nobel Prize for embryological discoveries. John Gurdon got a Nobel Prize for figuring out how to make induced pluripotent stem cells. Francoise Barre-Sinoussi got a Nobel Prize for discovering HIV.
I would want to have a blast so... George Carlin, TIna Fey, Bill Cosby, Rodney Dangerfield and Phyllis Diller.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mark Twain yet. For a list of historical figures that would be cool to have at a party, he needs to be somewhere near the top, right? Not too sure who else would populate my list, but probably my great-grandad, "pawpaw". It's interesting to see how many people have said something like that.
I saw in another thread that you voted for Obama and then regretted it. I don't fault you for that, I'm of a similar feeling but I'm wondering if you'd have any specific thing you would like to say to him at this dinner party?
So many things. "You were for Net Neutrality before, what changed? Why do you continue to kill civilians with drones? Why have you killed Americans with drones? Why do you not dismantle the NSA? Why are you for global, illegal, NSA spying? Even on your own people? Why have you not brought all the troops home? Why have you not closed Gitmo?"
