Creation! That is the key to happiness and in my opinion it is why we are here, to make things. I make a number of things, music, podcasts, sites, art etc. What is it that you have most recently made? Share below, please. But...
Enough about you I've been recording music a lot lately. Tonight I made this song and while there are a couple moments that I like, overwhelmingly I'm underwhelmed by it. I used some lines that humanodon was kind enough to lend me and what I find lacking in the tune has NOTHING to do with his words. I just never fell in to the groove, I was never locked in, you know.. ?
I recorded this song last night and I really, really like it. It seems for every 10 songs I record, I get one I actually like.

I wrote the bylaws of the nonprofit I'm helping to create this week. I was promoted from volunteer to treasurer. I made a logo for it as well but didn't like it. I'm not a great graphic designer, so I hired someone else. I also put up the framework of a website for it. Waiting on logo to come back to finish it. Nothing I feel comfortable linking yet, though.
I made a new necklace with 5 fives, but I'm away at a convention and don't have a picture of it today. So instead I will post one of my pictures that I really like. It seems to mostly elicit shrugs, but some folks have really loved it. It got gallery time and a tiny bit of press. It's called Pisces and it's based on binary counting numbers.
They count from 0 to 15, down the left side then rotated 180° and up the right side. 0s are white, 1s are black, I think they look like fish in seaweed. You can see two black fish, or two white fish. Thus Pisces. Which is twoness. Which is binary.
I think the symmetry is very pleasing as well. The numbers 0-7 fit right into 8-15 if you fold them over.
Yep I can see the theme of binary and symmetry. What I meant to ask was if the binary numbers you used mean something mathematically or otherwise apart from creating the pattern you needed. Reading from left to right the numbers are: Binary DEC HEX 00001111 15 F 00010111 23 17 00101011 43 2B 00110011 51 33 01001101 77 4D 01010101 85 55 01101001 105 69 01110001 113 71 I didn't see an immediate pattern in the numbers, they are not primes or anything. It's a pretty interesting picture as you mention you can fold it along its Y axis and the 0 and 1's match up. This is also true along the X axis. Its a simple idea but quite pleasing.
I wrote this stream of conciousness thing on Thursday:
I walked one day upon the canal, Sun shone brightly through dappled leaves. The willow wept for days gone by and never to come again. So many things I will never see again, atmospheres so fresh in mind they feel like they only happened
yesterday. Love came and went just like the tide that ebbs and flows. We built a boat together and sailed it far and wide. Sadness brought that boat to shore and we went our separate ways. Those places we visited are still in my head and that is where they will remain. You may be gone but I’m still here.
I've been (and will be) busy with two things: renovating our new home and keeping an eye on the new puppies we got yesterday. I've made a temporary sleeping place for these two until we get all the dog supplies we were supposed to get two days ago. They're really quiet and are already starting to get used to us. This morning they lay under the table when we had breakfast. As you can see they're very cute. Downside so far is the potty training, but only time will fix that.
Thanks, never really thought about that. The downside right now is that they have a bladder that can only hold ten atoms, so I'm cleaning the floor every other hour. Their cuteness makes up for it! Also, their dad is a Newfoundlander, it'll be interesting to see how big they've become when I return from Canada.
Congrats on the puppies and on the home. That is a lot of big changes all at once, you must be a patient/resilient fella.
I made a tomato soup. This might not sound like a big deal but I've learned how to make soups with creamy bases, and that is a big deal for me. Now I can make everything from avocado soup to fish soup. The possibilities are endless.
As someone that cooks often but has never made any kind of soup, I'd say that what you've accomplished is a big deal. I really ought to learn how to make soups too. Someday.
I made a surface water cellular automata and a ABM about gardening in the past week. I also made Brussels sprouts kimchi and some fermented dill pickles. They are gone.
Well I didn't really make this, but I did record myself playing it. It's Chopin's prelude Op. 28 no. 15, the "Raindrop" prelude. Now that I'm halfway through a 12-pack it sounds alright, but usually all I hear are the mistakes. In fact I recorded it with a directional mic pointed right at that repeating A flat and it sounded horrible until I adjusted the EQ in audacity so that everything was somewhat normalized (I can play alright but I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to recording/production). Try to ignore the squeaky sustain pedal if you listen. EDIT: Woo! It's embedded now. Also, thanks for the kind words :)
I edited it and it borked. It initially worked but when I went to add a shout-out in the comment, it broke. I've emailed forwardslash regarding it.
First of all, it sounds wonderful, great job. I listened to it with my 4 month old son and he too approves. Soundcloud currently doesn't embed in comments and it also doesn't display on mobile. I've shouted out to mk and forwardslash a few times on this but always forget to bring it up in our meeting. insomniasexx is far more disciplined about keeping a list of requests so hopefully she can hold me accountable for remembering. Soundcloud is being used more and more often and IMO we need to fix these things. Again, beautiful playing!
Beautiful! I'm sure thenewgreen can tell you how to embed that...
I made a post a little bit ago, but my sister and I decided to try our hand at a Let's Play channel. As I also said in that post, it's not horrible in quality for a first try, but we'll probably invest in equipment and stuff if we feel like we're having fun. Which I'd say we are. My creative slump seems to be going away now. Guess it took trying something new for that to happen. Also chronicling the most epic tale of all time . Look out for Chapter 2, peeps. Edit: that song is the bomb dot com. I wonder if it'll show up sometime somewhere. I dunno. Maybe.
The last thing I made was this post. Sorry about my terrible sense of humour, I'll try not to bring it out too much. I like your music, it's nice and not busy. A lot of music has too much going on in the background, which I think is bad because it distracts away from the vocals, which should be the main focus of the song. Off topic; it's nice seeing the community spirit here at Hubski. I would like to contribute more, but I'm worried I'll make it a worse place, and I don't have much interesting stuff to contribute.
Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it and don't worry about the bad joke, it was a good excuse for you to reach out and I appreciate that. You've been kicking around Hubski for a while now, I definitely recognize your username. I hope you don't feel too reluctant moving forward to comment/participate because imo, those that are by nature discriminating about what they post to Hubski are the best people to follow.
This is an old thread but I'm posting anyway. You guys read XKCD? Its this funny, smart, science/tech thing that is well worth checking out. A few weeks ago he added this which peeked my interest. He took 2 lists and tried to generate a regular expression that matches all the items in the first list and none of the items in the second, with the goal being the shortest expression is the winner. He used Star Wars movie subtitles vs Star Trek movie subtitles and his shortest regular expression was:
I took a shot at writing my own regular expression builder and tried to implement a clever way to find the shortest regular expression by grabbing the terms that were matched by the fewest expressions and picking the expression that matched the highest number of terms. Iterating over that to produce an expression that matched all the provided terms. The code is on github; its horrible, slow and in need of a lot of refactoring, but my solution to the SW vs ST was:
I'm taking some time to focus on neat little problems like this that are solvable. Following on from Richard Feynmans advice, I find a real joy in solving things like this and I forgot they were so much fun./M ! [TN]!B/
Note that I used "!" instead of the bar as it messes up the formatting here. ..p!t..
which is 1 character shorter than Randalls solution.
I <made> up my mind that I'm going to spend the next month trying to get to a better place mentally/emotionally and get to the point where I don't feel like I need a girlfriend or intimate connection (physical and otherwise) with somebody to be happy. Which shouldn't be that hard, but is.
Here here. I know where you're coming from. This isn't applicable to everyone because the situation is different per person, but it worked for me - have you thought about spending time with family? My sister and I have been spending time playing videogames, watching movies, and generally hanging out together, and it's put me in a very happy place in regards to what you're talking about. It gives me that intimate connection without having to feel pressured, or needy, in a sense. Perhaps I'm not communicating this very well. But it did help me out.
Psst. 8b, it's actually "hear, hear" :) I think this is a good suggestion and it's an option that many people tend not to explore, especially in America. If spending time with family is not easy or doable, sometimes spending time with friends who are like family can be beneficial, especially if they happen to be at a similar place in their lives.
8bit and I have actually been having a pm conversation about this stuff, but I wanted to share it since I think it's been very interesting, and to see what your (and anyone elses) opinion would be of this conversation. I'm not sure if you can see all of it or just the one comment? If you can't see all of it I'll link you to the rest.
Adding you to it, since I'm assuming that's what the "me me me" meant.
Just included you in it. I've never tried to link a pm before so it's good to know what happens in that situation.
That's really good to hear, I really want to get to that place myself. Good luck!
Ehh . . . I think the track turned out better than the sketchy idea I sent you. I'm planning a month-long generative exercise so maybe something better will come out of it. Or if you like, you can dig through some of the stuff I have filed away. This one I don't really like and have not touched for over a year. Maybe I will play with it, but if I do end up finishing it or using it for something else it will look very different when its done:I used some lines that humanodon was kind enough to lend me and what I find lacking in the tune has NOTHING to do with his words. I just never fell in to the groove, I was never locked in, you know.. ?
share a poem you otherwise would have shelved
When my dog plants his nose in an attractive woman’s crotch and sniffs
I mention that his favorite food is crab. It’s a lie that gets me slapped
and the dog stopped laughing about it a long time ago. He rolls his eyes
at me and makes sure I can see his asshole. Being charming is only fun
when one doesn’t care or is pretending to be someone else. Say, James
Bond, but without a license to kill or even a lease on life. I clean up well
and people take me pretty seriously until I start telling the truth. “C’mon,
you don’t really want to eat Mike’s face off because he defied you!” Yes,
I fucking do. My name ain’t Karen often, but cross me and cannibalism
taps me on the shoulder and whispers recipes. I’m told adrenaline ruins
meat, but dog done the Chinese way tasted ok to me. I wonder, would
the erections be as intense? But really, I want people to be a part of me,
to feed my eyes to help them see what I see and how right I am, like after
love-making, bathed in the afterglow and the sheets wail “ruin!” The dog
of course, waiting for a chance to play tug-of-war with cast off panties,
to stretch them over his face and fall back asleep. In this, we are one.
I took some of the lyrics and made this tonight:
That's pretty rad! I love how that sub-chorus of "cannibal" goes throughout and sounds almost like "animal" (which is something I was playing with a lot at the time). It sounds really good and not because you adapted some of my words/ideas. I am a huge fan of dark sounding Western/surfy guitars. I really like the eeriness of the thing. Let me know if you want to keep playing around with words and music.
There are lyrics in that poem:-) My dog and I we want to do the same thing, she smells so good Somehow he can get away with what I never could
So I guess the last thing I created was to design and implement a business rules engine that allows for product rules to be written in one contained piece of logic that can be maintained, written and tested as a single unit. Up to now my company has had all sorts of rules spread out across loads of different logical layers which made testing and maintenance a nightmare. I hope I have changed that and it seems that way in the little time it has been in use everyone agrees that it is a big improvement. We'll see.
I was never arrested as a kid in New Mexico. Cops came and told us not to blow up army figures in the canyon with firecrackers once. That said: - A kid I hung out with when I was a supersenior got arrested for beating the shit out of his mom. For some reason they decided I was the responsible adult in the situation. 18 years old, and a 17-year-old friend was officially, temporarily a ward of me. - My sister was taken into custody regularly. My parents were usually drunk asleep. The police would call the house, ask to speak to "mr. bl00" and talk to me, none the wiser. They'd then let her wait out in the parking lot and I'd pick her up. - Edward Abbey's The Monkey Wrench Gang, which may or may not have inspired the creation of Earth First!, was inspired by a string of mysterious billboard vandalisms in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico in the late '60s/early '70s: ...yeah, that was my mom. So as it turns out, I'm actually the MOST law-abiding mutherfucker in my entire family. How you like them apples? _________________________________________ Last thing I made: TV. It's actually pretty good. It'll be on Wednesday night, I believe, won't tell you where, won't tell you when, but I'm oddly proud of it, which is unusual for this particular show.“For diversion she joined the good doctor on his nighttime highway beautification projects, assisting him in the beginning as driver and lookout. When they tired of fire she learned to hold her on at one end of a crosscut saw. She learned how to swing an ax and how to notch the upright posts of a billboard so as to fell it in any desired direction.”
I just built a very wonky prototype of a bracelet sensor system. Well, I put together the electronics and the code -- four other people did the rest. The idea is that it will take biometric responses (pulse, moisture on skin) to light up the bracelet at certain colors and speeds. It would be meant for children on the autism spectrum and their parents: the parent can see the response and get a better idea how the child is reacting; the child can learn to associate the favorite colors to a parent's emotional state. We won a competition on Sunday. Now we have to make the prototype a little less cargo-cult in time for Wearable Tech LA on July 17th. I'm a little stressed -- I didn't think we would win. We hit the right chords with the judges, one of whom was from Intel and another from a VC angel firm. Now we have to get this thing to survive a more scrutinizing panel. ...but it's been a rush! I am coding in C and getting responses! I had a pie-in-the-sky idea to make a prototype by the end of the year unrelated to this: it would take phono line (millivoltage, pre-RIAA leveling) as input and put MP3, AAC, OGG or flac on an SD card. Now I have a lot less fear of not figuring out the ADC part.
written a long time ago and i don't even remember who or what about. by a long time last year. by i don't remember it may be that time my supposed best-friend slept with the guy i thought i loved. MAYBE. not sure. On Not Being The Same Person
Whoever thinks I am their mirror –
with dishwater hair and stickbug
fingers, a nose to rival the Sphinx –
should remember how that frame
reverses things – who draws in
on the easy or the weak, who reflects
what is thrown at it and
August blossoms with humid fat,
the lush lull of slow rivers
convincing themselves to turn over
on gray rocks. Whoever sees
themselves in me would
be well-served to glance again.
