Hey all,
I wanted to make a thread in which users here can share a little bit of information about themselves. I really feel like the community here is more of a family, and honestly I would like to get to know everyone better. So if you would like, please share some information about yourself that is interesting/quirky. I'll go first.
My name is Goldbludgeon. I work full time for an eye doctor. I have a dog. His name is Fungus. My hobbies vary wildly, and I even think they are weird. I think it is best to simply list what I do for fun so here you go:
- Dance Salsa
- Play Guitar
- Make Balloon Animals
- Sing
- Play Tabletop RPGs ( Dungeons and Dragons)
- Enjoy Tea
- Get tattoos
- Write
- Better myself ( Meditation, Workout, etc. )
- Bike Riding ( Built my own.)
- Video games ( Who doesn't?)
- Cook
So that's me. Your turn.
P.S. Does Hubski do a secret santa exchange? I think that would be fun. I'd be willing to organize it if not.
Nice idea goldbludgeon! That's an unusual handle, what does it refer to? My name's Mike. I'm American but I live in Norway. My hobbies are as weird as yours. - I'm a father of 3 teenagers. They are awesome. - I'm a math guy. I've taught every level from preschool to university. Middle school is my favorite. - I was a circus artist (I did juggling, trapeze, slack wire, and clowing) and graduate of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College. I've performed with three circuses when I was in my 20s. - I play guitar and piano. Not so good. But I like to write songs. Currently secretly writing songs with steve. Don't tell anyone. - I make math art. http://nakedgeometry.com, for example. - I just bought a viking camp last week that I'll be turning into a mathematics creativity center. It's the gutsiest thing I've ever done. http://matematikkbølgen.com - I got tenure in the US and gave it up to move to Norway. I got tenure in Norway and I'm giving that up to run my own business. I think math in schools entirely misses the point. This makes me unpopular with some of my colleagues. But popular with the downtrodden. Thus my soon-to-be break with the establishment. - I like cool mathy things, such as puzzles, logic, balloon animals, magic, music, games of all kinds - I like scifi movies and tv. I don't read books like I should. Instead I read hubski. - I write. Articles, a novel, children's books, poetry. I perform in a play every year. - I have a dog. And a cat. They don't like each other. But they like me. - I have uncurable cancer (how's that for mood-killer?) I've had more unpleasant medical procedures in the last 3 years than a human should be allowed. I'm doing pretty damn good right now and should last for a while. - I hate sleeping - I have a few bitcoin. I bought my first one at $600. I like watching them lose value. mk tells me I'll be rich someday. I believe him. If I go broke, I'm going to sleep on his couch. - I'm a member of a secret organization. We meet every year. And sometimes throw axes.
Hi Mike! Goldbludgeon was the last name of the first ever character I rolled for DnD. His full name was Ricamross Goldbludgeon, he was a alcoholic dwarf fighter. He first entered the story line by being thrown through the tavern wall by a troll. He was a fun character. Mike, you sound like an awesome guy. It really blows that you got stuck with cancer, ( incurable at that ) but it sounds like it has made you into who you are now, which is awesome. Your hobbies are rocking. I love that you graduated from the Ringling Brothers College. That blows my mind.
I think my first DnD character was Norrin the Barbarian, straight from the first Basic D&D set. This must have been around 1980. I don't remember what the stock adventure was called (anyone?) I do remember it had a big building and caves underneath. We finished the building and instead of going back to town and leveling up, we went down into the caves and met level 2 monsters. The first wandering monster we met was a carrion crawler and it killed the entire party. So much for Norrin the Barbarian.
My mother went to Clown College. Frosty Little used to come say 'hi' when we went to the circus, but I was too young to know I should have been impressed. When were you there?- I was a circus artist (I did juggling, trapeze, slack wire, and clowing) and graduate of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College. I've performed with three circuses when I was in my 20s.
I'll bite! I've been around a while (almost 2 years according to my profile) but still sorta feel like I'm poking around the pondscum rather than in the depths of the community. I like everyone well enough though :) My name is Chelsea. I'm a grad student in DC. I grew up in the SF bay area and I don't want to go back because I prefer seasons to sunshine -I speak/have studied 5 languages. I lived in rural Jordan at the end of 2012 and am struggling to find someone to speak Arabic with so I can keep my fluency - a quick glance at my tags you get #grrltalk and #meowski which is me in a nutshell. my most shared posts are from international cat day about turning cats into free mobile wifi hubs https://hubski.com/pub?id=171696 , a Japanese game show with powerlifting cats https://hubski.com/pub?id=185389 , and an article about transphobic Wikipedia edits from Congress https://hubski.com/pub?id=174262 - my favorite hubski community event (?) is #pubski. i have been to exactly 1 meet up. - I am riding on the coattails of my more-Internet-cool bf Meriadoc - I'm working on being able to squat a bear. Grizzly is the ultimate goal but black is more realistic. - breakfast is my favorite meal of the day - I never learned how to ride a bike
i try to throw you a bone ONE TIME...u fuckin nerd
I've met you IRL, I agree with you. Your far cooler gf exaggerates :)
How much do you squat currently? Did you study linguistics?
i've fallen off the wagon b/c of finals but I was moving up to 100 last time I worked out. I've been doing SL 5x5 for 2-3 months now.
I'm assuming you do full body? Legs and back one day, Arms and chest the next? 5x5 at 100 is pretty good, but try not to become stagnant.
SL 5x5 is a supposed to be 3x a week A-B, squats-bench press-barbell rows/squats-overhead press -deadlift. my last final is on saturday and i hope to get back on the horse after that!
The only name you're getting out of me is my username.
- Rabid music listener, have no musical talent myself. I post the #weeklymusicthread, where I post mostly new industrial, noise and goth albums, and then the rest of hubski posts things you might want to hear.
- Programmer at a non-profit. Non-profits, like most non-technical organizations, have mostly boring technical problems to solve. I get to pay the bills with work that doesn't make me feel dirty or vapid, though, so there's that.
- On my second trip through graduate school. I have no desire to work in academia, but the real world is boring and autodidacts too often become cranks. I am probably going to be a student indefinitely.
- Other people's cats bring them dead animals. Mine brings me cigarettes. He is either a very thoughtful kitty, or trying to hasten my demise.
- I wanted to be a magician when I was a kid. I was horrible at actually performing, but fairly good at the technical bits. I have taken to teaching friends' kids how to cheat at cards and pick locks and pockets. I am assured this is way cooler than what they learn with the boy scouts.
does he bring you lit cigarettes? because that would be one talented kitty.
I think many of us know each other because of time spent on site. We've been here a while and as you too have been here for a bit longer, you'll get what it is that makes each of us tick. One thing you can do is to click on a users name and check out their profiles. For example, if I were to click on _refugee_'s profile I would quickly learn that she blogs, writes poetry and uses certain tags etc. I think you will dig the #pubski post which is made every Wednesday, it's a great place to get to know one another. I appreciate your enthusiasm though and therefore, I'll play along: -Musician -started the #hubskioriginalmusicclub -Father of two kids, a girl that is 4 and a boy that is 9 months old -Co-founder of the most amazing online community in the world -I love to cook, see #grubski -and by all means participate -I enjoy running, tennis and baseball (though it's been years since I've played baseball) -I dig #bitcoin -I make the #tngpodcasts and with steve produce the content/videos -I have a dog named Harrison and I'm a huge #thebeatles fan -I collect vinyl -I have a ton of energy and sleep much less than the average human
Tng I recently got my dad's old record player in shape and have borrowed some of my parents' records as well as bought a few of my own. Quick question - how do you store your 45s? I've got a huge stack of them (no sleeves) and they don't fit on my shelf the way the LPs do. I was told that their label raises them a bit so the actual records don't touch each other when stacked, I don't know how true that is though. Any tips?
I use two "book ends" to stack them up in a large drawer. Nothing fancy and frankly, I don't have enough of them at this point to warrant anything else. My dad has a kick has 45 collection and I hope to thumb through it and borrow some the next time I'm home. Have fun with the new set-up and the new records. That's fun stuff. I need to start spending more time actively listening to my collection as opposed to passively listening when friends are over etc. Late night and with headphones, alone. Tomorrow night I'm listening. We should start hosting Hubski vinyl parties where we all post the album we are going to actively listen to that night and then do it. I digress. Enjoy! sorry I couldn't be of more help. bgood79, any suggestions for how to store 45s?
Are they in sleeves or just loose records? And I'm guessing you're stacking them on their sides as opposed to lying flat? I don't know anything about vinyl, really. But I thought you aren't supposed to keep them out of sleeves or they'll get scratched, and you aren't supposed to stack vertically or they'll get warped. Vinyl listening party sounds like a great idea. I ordered a used copy of Todd Rundgren's Something / Anything and it should be here soon.
They are in sleeves, they are side by side and not stacked. Let me know when that Rundgren album arrives, I'll try and pick something new up too. I've been wanting to pick up some bossa nova but don't know where to start....
No. No time yet. I need to buy my bro in law some records for Xmas this week though, I'll pick something up then. Enjoy that listen.
Hey thenewgreen, Thanks for the response. If you don't mind me asking, how did you end up co-founding Hubski? I am a musician myself, and I really can't stand any kind of coding. Did you contribute code wise? Idea wise?
mk had Hubski up and running for a couple of months and per his prodding, I created an account. We were friends, still are and he asked for suggestions on the site and I started giving them. You have to realize that Hubski basically looked exactly like hacker news but with little +'s next to each post instead of up or down arrows. He then asked me to come on board and be a part of it. I contribute in many ways. In fact, it would be easier to say what I don't do to help with the site. I don't program or code in any way. I couldn't imagine any other person that I could work better with than mk. His strengths are my weaknesses and I would wager that he would say the same. I think we both feel like Hubski is our baby, we care about this place immensely and do all that we can to make it a special place and all that we can to ensure that we don't fuck it up. If you are a musician, chances are you are a pretty creative person. There are any number of ways that you could channel that creativity into creating something of your own outside of music. Whether this be a "start up" etc. is up to you. For the record, we always refer to Hubski as a project and not as a "start up." The connotations with the latter just don't fit. Good luck!
Hello, I'm completely new, so this is handy :-) I'm James, I'm from the UK but am currently based in Berlin, and I'm a web developer. I have three dogs back in Blighty that I'm missing, and will bore you to death talking about them. The list of things that are good: – Dogs – Travelling – Science fiction books and films – Roguelikes/indie games – Portugal and Portuguese food – Meteor JS – Classical music – Chiptune music Edit: formatting (is this not Markdown?)
Hey, curious, how do you like Berlin? I have only heard wonderful things and am planning a visit this summer (currently in san francisco). I've even considered maybe moving there after the visit if I dig it, but I work in biotech currently, not web dev or anything, and I haven't seen much in that regard and those jobs don't usually export as well.
I moved here from London, and I'd say it's a nice change of pace; live is pretty relaxed here. It depends on what you're after, but I think there's something for everyone. Many young people come here for the usual Berlin lifestyle, partying all the time (it helps that the cost of living is relatively low), but aside from that, there's a lot going on generally. English is very common, but I would recommend trying your best in German. I'm rubbish currently, but we'll get there. It's pretty cold right now (hovering around 0 to 5°C), but it gets to the low 30s in summer, so I'm sure you won't mind that when you go! I think Berlin actually fares quite well for biotech, though perhaps language would be more of an issue. See how you go!
sick, thanks for the feedback! I'm actually gonna look around at what's going on there in my field, job-wise. actually kinda weird that you ended up there and not here, web devs make a fucking killing in these parts.
Always nice to see people who like chiptune, anyone in particular that you enjoy?
Absolutely! Do you know Yoann Turpin? He's probably my favourite artist at the moment. Rhythm'n'Bits is just such a good album, tune after tune. Protodome is also brilliant, chip-pop in parts but very catchy. Disasterpeace can be a bit darker, and he produced the Fez soundtrack. In this talk he goes over some of the programmatic aspects of the way the music's created, which is really interesting. How about you?
Disasterpeace is a favorite of mine, Protodome is good too. I had never heard of Yoann before but I'm blown away by this, he's got some very crisp production and nice textures going on. Might have to buy the album you linked to. I'm friends with the guys in Revengineers and they're easily my favorite chip-rock band. Trey Frey is somebody who you'll probably love if you're a fan of Yoann Turpin, they have a bit of a similar vibe going. In terms of darker stuff, Zen Albatross is up there for me but it's hard to find much of his music at all.
Have you played the Binding of Isaac? You sound like someone who would really enjoy that game. Roguelike with Legend of Zelda influences.
Rebirth is excellent. I would say it is much better than Wrath of the Lamb. I own Spelunky too! I watch a lot of Youtube videos about Spelunky. Have they updated it recently?
Nice one :-) Trying to do speedruns is the way to play it, I find (though I'm not great by any means). They've released it on more platforms, like PS4 and PSP, but there haven't been any updates. I think the developer wants to leave it at that for that game; I've no problem with that, but I wouldn't mind another solid roguelike platformer. Vagante looks like it could be next.
I checked out Vagante last night. It's pretty solid in it's alpha already. I am legitimately excited about the official release. Super fun.
No my ex named him. I like it. Just stuck with him.
You'll do just fine here. I'm actually in the process of writing a campaign for my winter break. Small group, low-fantasy at a college on the coast in the North East. Miskatonic University anyone? I meditate casually, a few times a week. like TNG said, keep an eye out for #pubski, #grubski, and anything else you might find interesting.
Standard road bike. 12 speed. I actually joined a program called "The Bike Project" that takes old bike parts and teaches you how to build your own. It was really fun and it took me about a month to build it. Because of them, I now have an alternate mode of transport during the warmer months.
A fixie? I am not sure why, but I'm a bit scared of those bikes. I've never ridden one, but the concept of no brakes terrifies me. Is it really that much of a danger? What color are you going to paint it?
It does have brakes. First I can break using my feet (which is what I usually do) and I also have a front wheel brake. I actually feel way more in control because when I go downhill on a regular bike, i can only brake using the hand brakes. This one time I was on a really old bike and the brakes worked fine but then it started raining... Brakes went to shit and I was going downhill hoping the light will stay green. My fault for riding an old bike but I wish i had a fixie at that moment. I also feel the reaction time is faster. I can speed up/ slow down faster. And I'm more mindful of my surroundings. Since braking takes a lot more effort, I slow down more gradually when I see a red light ahead of me and things like that. It takes some getting used to but I like it more than regular biking. My bike is also way lighter, easier to fix and more exercise since you pedal constantly. I don't really care what color but black would be nice. I did a quick paint job last summer with white spray paint and it's really starting to look like shit. I'm hoping to repaint it more "properly" this time.
My name is Alex, and I'm a mid-twenties composer and gigging bassist slogging it in Vancouver, BC. I found out about this great community when I realized that the dialogue and content being spread on reddit was getting harder and harder to curate into a front-page that actually seemed meaningful to me. In addition to living a rewarding but incredibly difficult to sustain creative life, these things tend to show up: - Point and Click/RPG/Rogue-like Gamin'. - Table-top Gamin'. - Great Fiction and Great Poetry - Also learning, so non-fiction is cool too... - Digging up 60s/70s gems on vinyl, mostly funk/fusion/psych-rock. Leading to... - The DIY arts community. Leading to... - Drinking beer and yelling about art/justice/nonsense. (Vancouver hipsterdom/la vie bohème...) - Doing my best not to be a jerk. That's a start! (edit: formatting)
Hey adob, I'm glad you found us. It's funny, I think Hubski must have the greatest concentration of bass-players of any web community that has ever existed. You are in good company. Also, we have a fair amount of vinyl enthusiasts here too. If you are ever interested in joining in one of our #hubskicollaborativemusicclub projects, let me know. Also, I'll be in Vancouver in June of 2015. We will have to have a large Hubski meet up. We have some other Hubskiers in BC too.
This is cool! I'll make a run at it! I'm Peter and I'm in university on the US east coast. - I play ultimate frisbee for my college's club team, so I'm pretty athletic. At 6'2" and 180# my last 1rm for squat was 315#. I'm shooting for twice my bodyweight by the time I graduate. - I worked on the coast this summer and sailed solo to the Outer Banks on a Cape Dory Typhoon. - I've got pretty severe social anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which I manage by writing and listening to massive amounts of music. - I have resting bitch face. - My girlfriend's a dime and smarter than anyone I know. - When I was little my parents told me that being a strawberry tester wasn't a job I could have. I now agree but still think there's an opportunity for someone with my skills.
I've never heard the phrase "someone's a 'dime' before. What does it mean? I assume it doesn't mean your girlfriend is ten years old. Ah... It just came to me, you are saying she's hot, a perfect 10. -makes sense.- My girlfriend's a dime and smarter than anyone I know.
ghostoffuffle and I were recently sharing a similar sentiment with one another about our own wives. It's nice to feel that way about the person you spend your most time with.
Aside from being able to spell "meringues", Darren is also a fine musician! When his mouth is not full of meringues. https://hubski.com/pub?id=187244
This seems an interesting idea! I'm Sean. I'm 18, go to college in Boston (just did a semester in Melbourne, Australia!), but home is Birmingham, AL. I guess I'll follow the format of a list of past times as well. - I play Cello, but only as of about a year ago, before that, I played violin and piano for about 13 years - I like programming, mostly lower-level stuff, but I'm interested in web development as well - I try to learn math in my free time to get a head start on my classes - Singing and acting are great, I was in my high school's musical theater department for all 4 years - I like to read. I read Sci-Fi, psychology and sociology, and more recently the ASOIAF series. I'm also in the habit of reading self-improvement books (I'm a big fan of Cal Newport's work) - I'm a big fan of the outdoors in general. Hiking, backpacking, geocaching... If it's outside, chances are I'm up for it - I'm trying to gain weight / become more fit - I would like to start writing, but I'm not sure where to start
I'm sure I'm missing tons of stuff, but this is what I could think of off the top of my head.
Force yourself to write by dropping in on hubski's periodic #todayswritingprompt writing prompts. Here's yesterday's. You'll meet other writers.I would like to start writing, but I'm not sure where to start.
You've started already. Is there a particular genre you are interested in?
Welcome! My name isn't pablo and I'm a high school student, as well as a living supernova of teen angst! I play piano and sleep on my free time, if I'm not already listening to music. I read a lot of philosophy, and have an unexpected yet increasingly extreme interest in American history. I'm only slightly less geekier than you currently picture me– I'll have you know I just bought my third beanie from UrbanOutfitters. Hope you dig the Hubslopes, and tune in to #pubski if you want to learn more about other users. I also have an ancient tag #vagequestionsbypablo where many people have opened up quite a bit. Enjoy!
I'm c_hawkthorne. I've gotten c_hawk, hawkthorne and seahawk before. Pretty much anything close to my username works though. Now about me: 1. I love to play chess. There's an app called Chess With Friends. It is free and available for iDevices and Android devices. If you want to play, PM me and I will hit you up with my username and we can play. 2. Baking is great. It is fattening, delicious, and awesome. 3. Music is my life. I can't play, even though I have tried a bunch, but I love listening to it. 4. I play a lot of tennis. I am not the healthiest person and I need to stay active, and this is a good way to stay active. On top of that, tennis is awesome and fun. 5. Video games once in a while. I have three on steam, I play two, and that's all I really need. Not too often. 6. Writing is quite cathartic, but I don't do it enough. I've written short stories before on /r/writingprompts and get positive feedback, but I don't write that often. 7. I have a small obsession with something called cardboard crack, and have amassed if I had to guess a little over 4,000 cards. That's me!
I recently built a modern burn deck and tested it out at FNM. It's funny because I've always thought that burn decks were cheap, but now that I am on the other side of the coin I realize why people play them. It's an all or nothing mentality. If you can't get your opponent down to zero life within five turns you are screwed. I really like it and the game moves very quickly. I recently went back to my Abzan deck and it moves SO SLOWLY. Plan on making a blue/black deck next. We'll see how that goes...
The worst kinds of decks are mill and sliver/ally/etc. They're so annoying to play against. With that being said, I have an elf deck with a record of four turns, generally around 7 though. I also have a rainbow deck that is awesome to play with full of over powered cards and this land hate deck, which isn't great, but is fun to play with. I have never played in FNM, nor do I keep up with standard. I play strictly for fun. With that being said, I have recently been interested in going to an FNM, but I don't know what the time commitment would be like, and I'm not that great at making decks, especially quickly, which I feel like you would have to do at FNM.
That land hate deck looks really fun to play. You don't have to keep up with standard to play at FNM. A lot of game stores have Modern or Legacy tournaments on Fridays as well. It's normally around 5 bucks ( if they are doing prizes) or free to play. The time commitment would be around 3 hours. Sometimes I get out of there sooner. I would check it out. A lot of the players are really kind, and some will even evaluate your deck and give you cards to fill it out.
