52, meaning flagamuffin posted the first of these one year ago. This week I'd like to hear what you've posted in the past that you're still listening to, or what you've discovered in one of these threads that you're still listing to.
Iron Fist of the Sun - Who Will Help Me Wash My Right Hand
Theologian - Some Things Have to be Endured
Rome - Hate Us and See if We Mind, which I'm not linking to because Tristol is trigger happy with the DMCA requests and I can't find anywhere streaming it.
Lux Interna - There is Light in the Body, There is Blood in the Sun
Dark Matter - How Cold is the Sun
Blush Response - Tension Strategies
Kevorkian Death Cycle - God Am I
Of course, if you have something you haven't posted in the past to share, that's cool too.
HEY! Now in the upper left-hand corner of my Hubski toolbar there's a music icon and if I click it it brings me here! Am I unoberservant? mk how long has that been going on? I am in love with HAIM's album, specifically this song. They encapsulate some of my independence in moments. It is a good album for being single. I managed to get it on iTunes when they put their best-selling albums of the year on sale. I have barely done justice to the other albums I bought because I've been playing this on repeat.
ONE YEAR That's awesome!! Thank you flagamuffin for getting this started and to bfv for keeping it going for so long. For me the #weeklymusicthread is something I look forward to but more for the music I'll find than the music I share. You two should look in your mailbox for some special Hubski swag as a small token of our appreciation. -Thank you very much! kleinbl00 posted a link to Cayucas and he described them as sounding like "drunken Beach Boys," a description that peaked my interest. He was right, they do sort of sound that way. I picked up their album Bigfoot and I've been listening to it ever since. Really cool. I'm pretty sure BlueMojo introduced me to Vetiver via a weeklymusicthread post and I listened to that album "the Errant Charm" so much that I ended up buyng their past albums too. -Great stuff. I can't recall if sounds_sound posted the link to Sandro Perri via wmt or not, but either way I've mentioned it in wmt's before. edit: It wasn't originally a wmt post. It was Wolman. Still, we've discussed Sandro in wmt several times. Others that I've posted throughout the year that I'm definitely still in to: The Blisters Adam Green Breathe Owl Breathe Bowie -I'll never stop loving Bowie. Discovery -This song makes me wanna dance around the house Foxygen -Excited for more from this band. Exciting music imo. Hayden -thanks sounds_sound for letting me know he released a new album. Check out this link to a live version of "Motel." ------ For this weeklymusicthread though, I was going to post a link to a band I discovered las week called "On An On." I've been listening to their album Give In. My favorite track is this one titled, Ghosts -I love everything about it. Again, thank you to flag for getting this ball rolling and to bfv for sticking with it. We've had book/film/poetry clubs, music exchanges etc come and go with varying degrees of success but every Sunday we've been able to count on the music thread. -That's not an easy commitment, it's a special thing and I really appreciate it. You rule. This week I'd like to hear what you've posted in the past that you're still listening to.
The coolest part of the weeklymusicthread is discovering music:
Do you know Twenty One Pilots? I think you'd really dig them if you don't already. If I had time I'd go through some old weekly music threads and find the stuff that I specifically heard of through hubski, but as is it's too hard to separate all that. But I love these threads.
I was just listening to the Twenty One Pilots link you provided. I like the energy but, and I'm being really picky here, I wasn't a fan of the effect on his vocals. Really seemed produced, but that's just me. I wonder, is their older stuff more lo-fi? You made the Vampire Weekend comparison and the thing about that band is they're able to make big albums that still sound accessible and humble. -not sure if that makes sense. Should I have a different starting point for their music? Also, back to VW -Modern Vampires is an album I haven't tired of despite listening to it a LOT. Should have added it to my list here.
Honestly no that's pretty representative of their style. You might try Holding on to You from Regional at Best, it's another one of my favorites of theirs. But really it does just boil down to them being a bit overwrought, especially compared to other bands I know you enjoy. I didn't think about that VW comparison much, it may be wrong. Meant not so much musically as stylistically and attitude-wise. We'll see. Modern Vampires is incredible, speaking as someone who didn't like the first two albums much. EDIT: a preemptive thank you for whatever's in my mailbox! I'm away from it for a day or two but I'm excited. Hope the postal service managed to work, can't always count on that.
I like all of Vampire Weekends albums but Modern Vampires for me is the best album I heard all year, it continues to provide. I really dug Foxygens We are the 21st century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic too. -It's hard to be that derivative and still end up with your own thing. I'm excited to see what 2014 brings! Enjoy those shows and thanks again for getting this thing started.
I'm glad you like Foxygen, I'm a fan. I wanted to see them when they showed up in Philly but their concert sold out. Also, my love for Vampire Weekend knows no bounds. For a long time I wanted to look exactly like this girl. I bought that album on CD and on vinyl - vinyl you get a nice big poster of the cover art. It's front and center of my "music" wall in my room. - I still think she is stunningly beautiful.
This post reminds me how much music I've picked up from your posts. While I'm not a big fan of The National-esque vocals like Breathe Owl Breathe (too whiney sounding), I really like that Vetiver and The Blisters song. That Discovery song is amazing as well.
I just bought the Complete Well-Tempered Clavier books 1 and 2 on iTunes, as performed by Angela Hewitt. Digging it so much right now. as performed by Glenn Gould - not my favourite version, but also 100% free.
Well, the system of temperament that Bach was championing is not actually the kind of temperament we use now. The system we use now, which has "squished" fifths, is arguably the best way we've come up with so far. it allows us to play in all keys in tune "enough" for it not to be a big deal.
Yeah, but no. Ross Duffin wrote an article-length diatribe of his book that I've been looking for for like three years but can never find. One of these days I'll have to read it. The closest I can come is this review. There's apparently a lot of dispute about it. And while it's not much, damn if I can't hear a difference.
I totally agree that there's a difference between C# and Db, etc. As an orchestral musician and as a string player, that's my life blood. It's also why I love listening to string quartets, because they tend to tune this way (including "pure" fifths). Unfortunately, when you come to a keyed, multi stringed instrument like a piano, or a harpsichord, or even a harp, the problem comes in either having to change the pitch of the string, or having so many strings that it becomes unwieldy. The other problem is that the notes all change again if you're in another key. Bb for example is different in A, or B, or C, or D, etc. Always very slightly, but because of its scale function and its function in its family of chords (Bb Major, G minor, Gb Major, Eb Major/minor, C Dom7th, and so on and so forth) it has to change to "fit" inside of its chord. So even having a Bb/A# split key isn't perfect (though it is closer!)
We're human. We like things that are similar to what we've heard before. It's comfortable.
The Angela Hewitt Version I just bought is fantastic. This recording by Gould I find a bit sharp, too much attack.
Jake Bugg is playing here in a couple weeks and I'm going. Been listening to him a bit lately. Only 19 but pretty damn good. Rick Rubin produced his second album, though I like the first better, which was described by Bugg as more like a bunch of demo songs. No wonder I like it better.
Still listening to Amon Tobin... Bloodstone
I love Amon Tobin. He is one of the few artists that I'll willingly watch recorded performances of because of how incredible of an experience it looks to be.
I saw his ISAM tour a year or two ago (why can't I remember when?...). By far the most amazing live show I have ever experienced. I still watch clips of it from time to time. I'm wondering if and how he will be able to out-do himself with whatever he comes up with next.
That BINBEATS video is sweet. Talent fella, making some kick ass sounds/beats in unusual ways. Glad I watched that, thanks.
Yeah, BINKBEATS is extremely talented. All of the videos he's made are attempts at taking apart music produced electronically and performing it live with real instruments. Hopefully he creates a trend that sticks -- I think it spells something very interesting for the "future of music" as far as augmenting it further electronically goes.
Cool concept, I'm not familiar with the original version of that song. How similar does it sound?
ecib posted this a couple of days ago for last weeks, and I just saw it earlier today. The new Dean Wareham album is fantastic! I'm a fan of just about everything that he does.
This is great, I missed it last week. Thanks for reposting ButterflyEffect, it's really warm and pleasant. Off to check out more...
Jason Stein Quartet - Work Chicago free-jazz bass clarinet. I saw him perform live a few weeks ago and it was such an incredible experience.
whysowhite I like the album titled whysowhite a lot but haven't gotten around to listening to the other one yet. The albums are name your own price too. My favorite songs are probably renegade and mowgli, but they all have their own feel and the band has a great sound together.
Are you by chance from the midwest? I played with my band at a really small farm festival called Postock in Wisconsin this summer and these guys played there too. We apparently know a lot of the same people but i had never heard of them before, and now i'm seeing their name pop up everywhere. They definitely are really tight and a fun band to see live!
No, I'm not. They aren't big where I am, so I probably won't get to see them live anytime soon. Checking their tour dates, there's only one so far this year in Chicago. But I'm pretty sure they're getting more popular, and everyone I've shown them to seemed to enjoy their sound.
For some inexplicable reason, I've been binging on Paul Simon lately.
I've had Trouble Will Find Me by The National and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere by Neil Young, on pretty constant repeat for the last two months or so. Something about listening to the final track of each album, particularly Everybody Knows, which I've been listening sometimes 3-4 times in a row, just inspires me to get up and start the whole thing over again so that's what I'll link.
Stream You Blew It!'s new record Keep Doing What You're Doing EDIT. Also, Lone just released a b-side that is absolutely gorgeous.
That new You Blew It! is great. Did you listen to their split with Fake Problems back when it came out? Also, I don't remember if you play guitar/bass but Empire! Empire! just put up a ton of tabs of their own songs here.
I did listen to it! Probably my favorite split/EP from last year. I'm liking the new album, though YBI! songs are growers so I'm gonna wait to give out final judgement. I don't play guitar, though I feel I should. If I ever do get around to learning it I would probably play music like E!E! or Hightide Hotel, however.
Cool! Throwback. How about two bands I'm going to see in the next month: 1. Twenty One Pilots best song maybe -- next big indie thing a la Vampire Weekend. Swear. They've been semi-big for a while. 2. Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight
I can't even begin to tell you the things this song represents for me. It brings me back in a major way to a long hot summer and long drawn out love affair. You could call him the love of my life but I wouldn't. (i.e., data may point to that conclusion, but I refuse it.) It was the summer that song was everywhere. I love the song - I'm not one to consider songs tainted by association. Hell I have no hard feelings against the man, either. I'd just rather not believe he's the 'love of my life' - assuming such a thing exists.2. Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight
Philly Paris Lockdown by ?uestlove and Karen Ann is a beautiful composition (starts at ~10:30 in the broadcast). It was for a Philadelphia arts festival and merges older classical composition with a modern jazz rhythm and hip hop pacing. I recently came across it and listening to the full 18 min. song always puts me in the right mood.
For those of you into electronic music, check out ExMag's new album, Proportions.. solid gold, here's a link: https://soundcloud.com/exm4g/sets/proportions Other than that I've just been making my way (slowly) through my jazz collection: Miles, Brubeck, Metheny, others. Here's a favorite from that list: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loHQdupqcFY
Deap Vally - Bad For My Body and Walk of Shame is the new band i've discovered last week. As for the stuff i'm still listening to, it's the eastern european/balkan music. I've posted a couple of my favorites in the music swap and got to discuss this kind of music in the old folk songs post last week. Basically, at the risk of repeating myself my favorite artists for the past couple years have been Gogol Bordello, Goran Bregovic and Би-2 among many others.
