Punk, New Wave, Country, Folk, I love it all. Share what you got, maybe I'll share more.
Yeah, like this thread where covers are explored. Not "obscure" exactly, but the covers are obscure!
Oh boy! It is my time to shine! EDIT: Here are some South African bands just to be properly out there, Non-South African
Not to be rude but do you really think that no one has heard of St Vincent?
I added some more stuff just to make up for my St Vincent mishap :D
I had never heard of St. Vincent... not everyone spends their entire day listening to new music. I'm glad you posted it!
You never know. I thought that I may as well add a variety of very obscure to not so obscure, bordering on mainstream, just in case OP finds something new that they like.
Some modern Post-Punk with some epic synth
Or some 80s French Coldwave
The most beauitful song ever by the Swans front man's (Michael Gira) side project.
Edit: Also this (she kills me):
So I landed here at Hubski today after seeing the site mentioned during the hoopla over at reddit, where I've been lurking silently for the past few months. As it aligns perfectly with my tastes, this was the first thread/post I opened. After reading the welcome message and the Hubski stance on personal content I'd like to submit my own work to this thread... heck... musicians don't get much more obscure than me. :D My most recent 6 song E.P. on BandCamp: http://boozemonkey.bandcamp.com/album/the-new-mythology-e-p
and SoundCloud:
My recently launched personal site:
http://SanityCheck.net
contains lyrics and details and everything for 6 Booze Monkeys records as well as other material. I recently finished a lyric video for the opening song from the New Mythology E.P. I apologize if posting my own work here is in bad form... but who knows... someone here might dig it. Obscurely yours -
Blue
No, it's not bad form here. You might want to check out #hubskioriginalmusicclub.I apologize if posting my own work here is in bad form...
This is fantastic. Wonder what kind of a following they had back then.
Mmmmhmmm, this IS fantastic. Thanks for sharing it.
This might be a minor jump in style, but if you haven't checked out Starfucker, you really should. That said, I'll have to really check these guys out tomorrow. I'm liking what I hear.
https://plug.dj/funk-and-soul-cave we specialize in obscure funk and soul. Wed night weekly events are some of the best music on the internet. edited to add some actual links to your specific genres of interest punk:
folk
Once upon a time we would have DJ sessions using turntable.fm, but then that died and we couldn't find a replacement. Maybe we'll have to set up a Hubski channel in plug.
We started on turntable too! Our weekly Wednesday themed events have been going now almost 4 years. Here is a good sampling of our history if you can't make the weekly events. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgJDCYu0n9UhPS_jcbOurRQ/playlists
UPDATE: I've made a hubski room on plug.dj They've made a lot of improvements to plug as of late, to the point that it works better now than turntable did. The UI does take a bit of getting used to. I find the backgrounds pretty unfriendly to the eyes, but use something like pluggedN for Chrome and you'll get custom backgrounds and auto-woot features.
Three of my most favorite bands, unfortunately the first two are no longer making music: The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, a nerdy punk band whose lyrics consist mainly of Lovecraftian references. The Rosedales, a horror punk band that doesn't sound like a Misfits cover band.
Dispatch, a very talented reggae rock band from New England. They're starting to get a bit more popular these days.
These are only somewhat obscure, I think this sub-genre (whatever its labeled as, I don't even know) is popular in some parts of Europe, but I would have absolutely never encountered these songs without going out of my way to hunt them down. And I really dig them. "Forever" by Murat Tepeli, Prosumer remix:
"Mind Doodles" by Alec Tronic and Gabriel Vitel
"The Dark Side of my Room" by Extrawelt
"Nightflow" by La Fleur
"Qazaqstan" by Einmusik
big ups for Lil Ugly Mane!!!! That dude is one of the most talented producers in the game right now, his production is incredible and (hate to sound like buzzfeed) mind-blowing sometimes
Thanks for sharing. Really digging Son Lux right now. :)
Not sure what this genre would really fit into but I've listened to it 2-3 times a day for the last 3 days
Haven't found any but I've heard rumours that they're going to be DG's supporting act when their tour starts.
Freescha. Electronic music duo out of LA. Helped produce tracks for pop-stars (I.e. Sia, Britney Spears), yet rare is the time others are already familiar with them. I recently heard Moby is a fan. I'm am
If anyone on Hubski knows Sandro Perri it may be because myself and sounds_sound have been posting his music for the past year. Other than that I think he is pretty obscure. I LOVE THIS SONG. Listened to it three times today while walking around vancouver.
Put on some headphones and listen to this bad boy. Gorgeous. If you want to go really obscure, so far as I know this is the only recording of this piece. Kind of a cool bass concerto -
A few more on my end, then I have to hit the sack. I'll definitely be checking this thread tomorrow. I'm liking what I've listened to so far. The Whole Camel A folk punk band. They're newish, but they already seem to have a good act together. I'd be willing to see them live. The Tillers Old Timey band. Jesse Stewart Good folk. Really intense.
I love NZ Pacifika music - here's a couple of samples :
Kind of a psych-folk band: The Adventures of the Silver Spacemen Punk, somewhat along the lines of what you posted: Miami Doritos Awesome, dirty surf band: Harmonica Lewinsky Sad, lo-fi and new wave influenced: Bad Cello
I'm loving Miami Doritos. They make me think you might like SKATERS. They're a bit of a garage rock band but they got some really good songs. A little bit on the romanticized kind of way, not love per se but life views in general. In case you might have missed it, PUP really blew up on some of the smaller music subreddits. They actually remind me a bit of Against Me! before they went down the dark path of selling out. A band that I tell everyone who will even listen to me about is The Diminished Men. They're a psychedelic band with a touch of surf rock and a western sound. They blew me away live.
I'm a big fan of SKATERS and PUP, I haven't heard The Diminished Men before but I'm checking them out right now and am really liking it, thanks for bringing them up.
Fair enough. Iron Lung by Pram. It's listed on wikipedia as "neo-psychedelia" and on discogs as "future jazz, downtempo". I have no idea how to define it, and it's a very peculiar kind of mood. I find the title of the album to be strangely fitting, because listening to it makes me think of strange lives and small spaces. This is the second of the four songs contained in it, Water Toy. The Turtle Sessions by Echophone. Another short album, only three songs. If I remember correctly, it was the result of a one-time collaboration. Other than the fact that it's somewhat obscure, there's nothing exceptional about this album. The three songs are all simple ballads with catchy tunes, nice vocals and a hopeful, if slightly melancholic, feeling to it. Lite Life by Angst. 12 fast songs, alternative rock/punk, perfect for car trips and those moments when you need to listen to some fun and unpretentious music. The whole album is on youtube. While looking for information about this album, I found this blog about "wilfully obscure" music, check it out.
