I saw Grisman and his quartet in Bozeman MT back in 1996/7ish. It's when I realized that I dug his type of music but loathed the hippy scene. At one point, while intently watching and appreciating the music, a hippy came up to me and said, if you're not going to dance, leave." -then he continued to spin around like an uninspired dradle. I went on to attend the University of Montana in Missoula, a town full of hippies. I soon realized that while most hippies claim to be the most open minded people, they're the most closed off musically. Back then they listened to maybe 5 bands. Grateful Dead (and collaborators thereof), Phish, String Cheese incident and two other variable bands. -ie Rusted Root etc. So lame. But Grisman is great :) awesome player imo.
Been seriously getting back into Gorillaz
The Hotelier - Goodness. Stream at the end of the article.
Thinking of seeing them (for the third time...) and Told Slant next week.
If I were you I'd go, I really Goodness and I've heard Told Slant's new material is also great.
Sacha Baron Cohen was signed on to play Freddie mercury in the Queen biopic. However, he soon realized that the lead guitarist, Brian Mey was under the impression that the film would have Freddie Mercury die halfway through. Brian thought the film should be about how the band overcame his death and still rocked on. Wisely, Cohen realized nobody wanted to see that movie.
Naked Eye September 11, 2001 was a Tuesday. From my condo window I saw a constant stream of planes taking off or landing at YYZ. And then for three days I saw no planes at all. On Saturday I made my bi-annual trip up north to get together with 4 best buddies for a weekend of connecting and debauchery. We rotate hosting cottages. Twice a year. Open a cottage for the summer. Close a cottage for the winter. So after a day of cutting down trees, drinking beer and winterizing everything we cooked a massive, decadent meal. Beautiful wine, perfect steak and magic mushroom risotto. Then moved outside to sit lakeside and stargaze. Beautifully clear night. This song came on just as we sat down and no one spoke until it was over. We were sitting under the flight path between Toronto and Europe and there was a steady stream of military jets zooming across the flight path. Trying to get away from it all. Shrooms kicking in. Stargazing. Reality intruding. Not sure why I thought of that this week but there it is.
PUP - The Dream is Over is basically the only thing that matters to me right now.
Really getting into chill step lately. Not a big fan of dubstep, but some is okay. Its odd to see the evolution of my musical tastes from country as a kid to pop, to rock...to hating sell out bands, to not caring and just enjoying melodies, to rock, to metal, to gypsy rock to randomness whatever I can try out. Here are a few:
I actually have stuff to share this week! Bird of Youth has a new album out. I like it a lot. And I saw Black Mountain a week ago: Their new album, IV, normally isn't my thing, but I love it.
These Chains and Things by BB King That piano run keeps playing in my head. And it gets Louder. Each Time It Gets LOUDER! Makes me want to get out and sucker punch life in the jaw.
