Hey everyone! Hope life is treating you well.
This round's topic is: War
Drama, comedy, whatever. It just needs to involve war.
Try to limit it to one movie per comment so it's easy to keep track of voting.
Can't wait to see the suggestions!
I've also gotten interest for a separate Star Wars run-through in anticipation for the new release (and how about that trailer!). How would you guys feel about watching one Star Wars episode a week from November 6 until December 11? As a separate event from the voted club picks?
Let me know.

Paths of Glory Set the tone for every war-critical film for rest of the 20th century, also banned in France until the 70s, and you gotta be trying pretty hard to pull that one off. Thin Red Line is also fantastic, and I'm definitely gonna watch The Grand Illusion regardless of how this vote goes.
I'd like to suggest Life is Beautiful. Available to rent on Amazon and YouTube at least.
I'm going to submit some ideas this time. One movie that I really need to finally get around to watching is La Grande Illusion. Might not be a war movie in the vein of Saving Private Ryan or The Longest Day, but I've heard it's supposed to be one of the best films of all time.
I'm strongly supporting La Grande Illusion. I watched that for the first time this past winter and it is an amazing film both within the war film genre and for all of film.
I'll vote for The Thin Red Line. I've seen it a few times before, but I still get something new out of it every time I watch it.
I love The Thin Red Line. It was going to be my second suggestion. Great pick, and I'd love to read discussion about it.
I am 100% on board for the star wars viewing and discussions. Great idea.
Credit goes to ButterflyEffect and OftenBen. It really is a great idea. Should make me even more hyped for the new one
I've read people suggest that a great way to watch Star Wars would be episode 4, 5, then jump back to 2 and 3, the finish off with Return of the Jedi. That way, you have an awesome story that takes you from Luke to the reveal of Vader being his father, then jump to the back story of how Vader became Vader, and finally to the big resolve. (And you get to completely forget about episode 1, which is close to worthless.) I've never tried it, but I think it would make for a really dynamic viewing and a great way for the story of Luke/Anakin to unfold.
That makes total sense to me. Episode 1 is awful. 2 and 3 aren't so much better but at least they're less bubble-gum. I nerded out late last night and watched Collider Jedi Council's interpretation of the new trailer: I personally think that Chewy is going to die. Bummed. I think this is why Leia is distraught in Han's arms. How cool is it to see Rey scavenging in an old abandoned Star Destroyer? The entire thing is just completely bad ass. I'm beyond excited.
The Deer Hunter is by far my favorite war film of all time. It is thematically massive and presents some of the most iconic cinematic scenes in film history, at the very least in my opinion. It's a beautiful beautiful movie, and extraordinarily unapologetic when it comes to artistic license during some of its more climactic moments...I highly recommend it to anybody with the patience to sit through the entire thing (it's a little over 3 hours long) , as it's probably one of the greatest movies of all time. La Grand Illusion is also a great pick, and historically relevant on a variety of levels.
Well, well. Looks like we have a five-way tie. And knowing how these posts go, I doubt we'll get any more votes soon. Know what that means? Time for a run-off! The five films up for contention are Life is Beautiful, Paths of Glory, The Thin Red Line, Fury, and La Grande Illusion. I will reply to this comment with a comment for each film. Share the comment that contains the film you'd like to watch most. If you think of any better way to deal with a tiebreaker, let me know. b_b, humanodon, ButterflyEffect, OftenBen, roysexton, iammyownrushmore, blackbootz,_refugee_, mk, eightbitsamurai, Ave, camarillobrillo, havires, kleinbl00, ecib, insomniasexx, elizabeth, nowaypablo, pigeon, rjw, StJohn, Mindwolf, Meriadoc, beezneez, longstocking, theadvancedapes, ghostoffuffle, T-Dog, jonaswildman, coffeesp00ns, bfv, cgod, mike, thenewgreen, zebra2, Kaius, Zurangatang, InkBubble, Scorpio, enjoyablethings, edricarica, subduedit, protorobot, War, Formerly_Me, joelg236, steve, rinx, Merlin
Sweet. Could you do me a solid and just share the comment listing Paths of Glory in the run-off? Would rather just count dots to come to a winner later.
oh, i see how it's supposed to work now. derp.
Yeah, mk or whoever wants to take a look, the top comment here by moe only has one share but it's showing a full hubweel.
Kelly's Heroes! Because it has a great cast, theme song, is funny and shows how anarchic war can be. IMO it was unofficially remade or at least a very strong inspiration for 1999's Three Kings if you have seen that.
The Last Remake of Beau Geste? Or maybe even one of the many other versions of the film?
Well my favourite is the comedic send-up! I haven't really seen all of them, but the 1939 one i posted looks good.
Apocalypse Now Platoon Full Metal Jacket The only thing war is good for seems to be the movies... Dr. Strangelove is my pick but I think we've done that one already.
Apocalypse Now is one of my favorites. A very strange, murky, and long movie. Especially the Redux version.
Don't think we have unless it wasn't in the movie club. There's no movie club post with Strangelove that I can find at least.
It must be way way back there? My search function is kinda buggy. Hey, I love Jarhead and Three Kings too! My father was over there and that's exactly like he described it.
Sometimes don't know if the post or tags went through smoothly, so I'm going to start tagging everyone in a comment on these posts like I was doing to organize the theater.
