Welp, I know what album I'm listening to this week.
This song gets routine play on CBC radio 2 and I crank the hell out of it every time.
Weather turned this weekend and I needed some good sunny day driving music. Second Feelies album. Older daughter tolerated that for a while, and then requested "girls music," i.e. anything sung by a woman. Sick of playing Haim, so I dug out Sharon Jones, which she'd never heard. Liked it. Me, too. Reminds me of a beautiful night five or so years ago when I got to see her live at some outdoor venue at SXSW. In my spare time, I'm getting into some Kentucky roots:

This is really nice. I've been on an oldschool kick lately- listened to a bunch of Jean Ritchie a while ago, can't remember if I shared here: That said, some friends took us to a Punch Brothers concert a while back- I'd listened to a few of their tracks beforehand and thought, "ugh. Syrupy. This is gonna suck." But they were bananas live. Pulling some really tricky shit. Worth the price of admission. I'll check out more Tillers, thanks.
i know chris thile from nickel creek and always thought he sort of unfairly tipped the scales talent wise. brilliant musician.
I'm starting to get back into classic country again. I know it's not really Hubski's thing, so I'll just post one of my favorite songs. One year I made it my New Year's resolution to learn the lyrics to this song by heart. I never got around to it, but that's okay. God knows I could never sing it as well as Marty Robbins.
Actually, you're right. I've had some pretty decent feedback when I made this thread . . . I kind of figure though, with all the talks about The Beatles and modern Hip Hop and what have you, sometimes I feel a bit like an odd man out. As for Marty Robbins? Man, I just absolutely love his ballads. They're like bedtime stories set to music. He's not my favorite classic country singer, but El Paso is by far my favorite classic country song.
I absolutely love Lydia Loveless. Her label, Bloodshot Records has a ton of amazing artists. Justin Townes Earle and Scott H. Biram are two other really amazing country acts on the same label. Edit: I just checked out their artist page, and it looks like Neko Case is on the label too.
Re-living my youth: X-Ray Spex - The Day the World Turned Day-Glo - but actually I've been listening to the whole of Germ Free Adolescents for about 2 weeks now. Muslimgauze - Mujahideen - my quest to listen to everything released by Muslimgauze continues. Still only up to 1986. Difficult to find a lot of the early material for example on youtube. Back to the present.
Right - so prolific. I feel like Sisyphus,. New material (that he made while he was alive) is still being released.
I just found out about Holly Herndon. She makes experimental electronic music. A lot of her music concerns the relationship between people and technology (and yes I did just kind of lift that description from media/wikipedia but that's because it's obvious). It's trying to be contemporary and about now, which I like.
OWLS. I can appreciated how some might find Tim Kinsella's off key wailing to be a bit grating. However, I'm of the opinion that confidence and energy can negate the need for a traditionally good voice. I also think he's a lyrical genius.

I've been listening to Willow Smith's album Ardipithecus. I'm very surprised that I like it, since my music taste is pretty conservative, I usually hate anything with any hint of experimentation. But Willow's vocal delivery is so confident and so unselfconsciously expressive and playful that I can completely forgive the noodling, unstructured nature of her songs. A lot of the melodies seem improvised, but they're striking, and her voice is powerful and clear. She uses some odd articulations and accenting which gives a slightly (self) mocking edge to her delivery, the kind of intentionally odd voice you'd usually only hear in someone being silly or overly dramatic, but it works, to me it makes her sound genuinely charismatic, very self-possessed and accomplished, with an innate, very clever musical sense. The fact that she's only 15 makes it all the more impressive. You might call it self-indulgence, but I think it works, she sounds more confident than any other female vocalist I've heard, perhaps because she isn't scared to experiment and use odd phrasings etc. I think she's a very natural intuitive singer.
