Lately I've been pouring time into the HD Windwaker remake and Wonderful 101.
Windwaker is even more beautiful nowadays, and the speed sail is a gift from heaven. Wonderful 101 is really fun once you start to get the mechanics of the game down. It doesn't do a good job of explaining the subtleties of the battle system, but I've always liked figuring things out on my own. Beyond that, the cheesiness of the game is endearing to me.
So, what are you all playing?
My partner has a teenage boy with rage issues, self control issues, he steals, he lies, he bullies and acts violently towards us and his sibling. I don't need no stinking GTA V. I have the hardest video game called "Alien Parent" put on the easiest setting (got white, American, middle-class male in my inventory from the Exceptional-ism DLC) with the worst controller ever (something called "influence" that this teenager doesn't seem to recognize ... batteries maybe?). Other than that the partner and I still play starcraft ii every night in CO-OP v AI. My average apm ~ 40-50 if I've had a tea after dinner.
Ive been playing Division 2 for a while already. It's heck massive and dynamic. It even gets even better the longer you play. Each mainline mission stands out. After spending half of my life playing all possible shooters, I can confidently say that The Division 2 is the best loot shooter I’ve ever played. Thanks to division 2 booster service I get only the best our of this game. I can drop a link later)
Lately I’ve been playing Realmcraft. This is an exciting sandbox with unlimited possibilities in the style of Minecraft. I especially like that the game is free and that it can be played with friends.
I've been playing less lately too, but not because it's stressful or something like that. I just hit my goal of platinum a month ago and since then I tried leveling my smurf (level 28 atm) but that gets boring pretty quickly. The key to ranked imo is to play for yourself and not care about what others say. The mute button is also pretty useful, I just mute someone as soon as I see them being negative, because I don't want my mood ruined by some stranger just because of a game. I also turned all-chat off and that helped a lot, because i don't see the flaming between the teams then.
It's awesome to see all these new gamers join Hubski! Remember if you're a PC gamer we have a steam community group. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Hubski
I recently downloaded Steam for the first time, and I love it. I've been playing Bastion, which was fantastic. And I hear the same studio is making another game, so I'm excited for that too.
What was that game they're making called? Bastion was amazing.
I believe it is called 'Transistor', my sister's boyfriend saw it and played a demo at PAX east
I AM SO EXCITED FOR TRANSISTOR! Here's a trailer, piggyfreeedom!
Ashley Barrett. She sounds incredible live as well! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f86Z8aVStAo
Is that his name? Good to know. Reminds me of the 'cowboy' from the big lebowski
I cannot agree more about the artwork and the music. I think that is so astounding in games. To have meaningful music and well placed storylines intertwined makes for a great experience
League of Legends. Having just gotten into gold league in ranked, and with the world finals coming up, I've been getting extremely hyped up about it.
War Thunder - Free to play WWII/Korean flight combat sim. Awesome, can't get enough of it, especially since I'm crazy about WWII planes. CS:GO - Counter Strike Global Offensive, the game that keeps on giving. Been playing CS since 1999 when Beta came out while I was in high school. It's crazy people are still playing it, and it's still stayed true to its roots.
I just beat the original Wind Waker (not the HD version) for the first time. I don't yet have a Wii U, so I can't play the HD version :(. I'm also playing Fire Emblem: Awakening for the 3DS. It's an excellent game. It's insane how many different relationship pairs and conversations there are. And the game itself plays like any other SRPG, which I find entertaining. I'm just wondering why I never got into Fire Emblem earlier (I did play it when it first came over to the states though).
What did you think of Windwaker? Forgive me for being surprised you've only just played it for the first time! But I'm glad you got to experience it, haha. Fire Emblem: Awakening got so many hours out of me. It has only just been replaced by Animal Crossing (soon to be Pokemon X/Y). The writing is stellar, and there's so much room for replayability! It's awesome.
Being a Zelda fan, I'm surprised at myself for not playing it yet. I found it to be quite an amazing experience, even though some parts were a bit tedious. Luckily everything that I found problematic about the game was supposedly fixed in the HD version. I got Animal Crossing before Fire Emblem, so it's currently sitting at my "most played" on my 3DS. I'm wondering if I'm going to be playing Fire Emblem long enough to top it. Though, when Link Between Worlds comes out, that'll most definitely hit the top of my list. Already have it pre-ordered :D
Nice! Yeah, the HD remake definitely fixes a lot of the tedious stuff. Windwaker Link is definitely my favorite Link of all. Those expressions of his give him so much more character than most other Links. I forgot Link Between Worlds is coming out soon! It's been totally under my radar, which is strange, as I'm a Zelda fan myself. I'll probably pick it up soon after it comes out. The 3DS is really on a roll as of late in terms of good releases.
Hey, a tabletopper! How cool! I've always wanted to get into Tabletop games, but I don't have the expertise to create a very good campaign, and I'm better as a PC than as a DM. But no one I know IRL is very interested in playing! I remember doing a Serenity playthrough with some of my friends in HS...man, those were some damn good times!
Oh god yes, i really want to try a tabletop, but none of my friends are interrested.
mk and I have been trying to get a game of Wayfarers together...we could be on to something here, though I admit my skepticism to a virtual table top :) I am, however, intrigued! mk, have you seen http://roll20.net before? We could do Wayfarers with Hubskiers if it doesn't totally suck...
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. I recently played through the new Amnesia (A Machine For Pigs) and quite enjoyed it. Outlast as well. There's been some great horror/survival games out as of late. Once I get my new PC build up and finished in a week, my plan is hop into some Payday 2 with a couple friends. They've been urging me to get into DOTA 2, but it's not really my style. I'm also ashamed to admit that I'm kind of excited for the new Call of Duty to launch in early November.
Man, MOBIs aren't really my deal either, so I feel you there. And don't be ashamed about liking COD! There's a stigma against it, but if you enjoy it, let that flag fly, haha! Is A Machine For Pigs connected to the first Amnesia in many ways? Or is it more of a spiritual sequel, Like Bioshock Infinite?
It got a lot of flack for not being at all similar to it, so I'd say it's similar only in theme (amnesia..) and certain gameplay mechanics. Completely different story, gameplay, and even developer. It was good nonetheless though. It was developed by Chinese Room, who made the HL2 mod Dear Esther which is a must-play as far as I'm concerned.
You can definitely do it in one sitting. It's more a story than a game - it has immensely beautiful landscapes and scenes, and a great story and dialogue, but the interactivity is rather minimal, save from roaming around. I'd say it would pair great with a glass or two of red wine, or something greener if you swing that way.
I've been getting into Terraria again since their new update adding like a thousand new items and mechanics. I've been spending a lot of time playing Company of Heroes with some friends. One of the highest rated RTS games of all time. There's a mod called Eastern front allowing you to play as the Russians and the Ostheer. I swear, there's just no point in going and buying company of heroes 2 when this mod is out there.
Dota 2, I'm on to a match per day. Also a bit of Audiosurf when I need to relax and just want to listen to music, with nothing to do. EDIT: Looking for a few players (even if it's your first time!) for DOTA 2. I've posted this onto the steam group, so feel free to add me if you wanna play a few games!
Civilization 5: Brave New World My laptop runs it horribly on any setting below Standard size, so that sucks but as a history buff and strategy game enthusiast, it's a lot of fun and a nice break from my Paradox game binges.
Because I'm saving up for a new laptop, I don't really have alot of spare money to spend on new releases. I usually wait for Steam sales and borrowing/trading games with friends. But for 3 years now, I have been playing League because almost everybody I know plays it and I'm pretty solid at it. It's also a good game to improve on because its fully f2p and you cant improve your skill by buying things. Other games I love to play are Civ 5, I've been so addicted to it lately. It's just so hard to put away. Everything about it is amazing. The quotes after you finish a research, the game mechanics, the indepth playstyle of the AI, etc.. Also on Steam I prefer to play Torchlight II, I was a huge fan of T1 back in the days, and this game is just so much more fun than D3 in my opinion.
Neverwinter, which is an MMO that I'm actually really enjoying. The combat is action orientated so it occupies me a lot more than other MMO's, you can start instances pretty early on as well which I think is pretty cool too. Other than that Battlefield 4 beta, really good! It's like a mixture between Medal of Honor and Battlefield 3, just really satisfying to get a kill, and has a very smooth play-style.
Lately I've been playing The Binding of Isaac. It is ridiculously hard to beat.
I remember trying that, but it was on a crappy school laptop which couldn't handle it properly (Think intel atom and integrated graphics) So it was actually easy, because everything ran so slow.
Yup, and then I got to the last few stages where there were so many enemies and bullets that trying to move did nothing, and I died every time...
Wipeout HD on the PS3. I can't explain how much I love this game and its predecessors on the PSP (I haven't had a chance to get Wipeout 2048 for the Vita). It's such a thrilling game, and playing it after at least 200 hours is still fun. It deviates significantly from most games - you don't drive cars, you fly anti-grav racers. You travel at 700km/h, you have aerobrake control, you can literally fly across sections of the track if you're travelling fast enough.
Although it is cool to farm a bunch of gold then buy a super good item at the Auction House I think getting rid of it will be great for the longevity of the game. All of the patches in the last year have been great and I think the D3 team finally knows which path they need to take to consistently improve their game.
We'll, I played a decent amount of Ride to Hell: Retribution recently. It's pretty much just as bad as you'd expect, but I enjoyed myself. The fully clothed, haphazardly animated, completely without context sex scenes make the game. It's pretty much the hardest I've laughed playing a game in a while.
I've been playing Fallout 3 again, but it's boring me. Maybe I should have chosen a different kind of player to creat. I would love to play Wind Waker though. My Gamecube shat the bed about 25% in. I had to do that thing where you melt a Bic pen to make a wrench to get the case open (who has a triangle wrench?) and turn that screw that adjusts the laser just so in order to get even a half hour out of it. The Christmas present that wasn't. I also play Minecraft, but only solo. I'm off my cannon kick and now I tend to make ridiculously long rail systems. Yeah.
World of Warcraft. The whole storyline surrounding deposing the Horde's leader Garrosh being corrupt and actually having to storm the main capital of the Horde itself (Siege of Orgrimmar) has been some of the most fascinating lore in a long time. The Timeless Isle (the current end-game hub) is also very PvP-centric and reminiscent of the Isle of Quel'Danas in terms of constant world PvP taking place and befitting gear/loot rewards abounding.
Dota 2. Started playing right before the game officially came out. I have never had this much fun with a video game in my life. The amount of room to improve is one of my favorite parts. Also bought GTA V but I am not playing it as much as I could because of dota. Also playing a little bit of the original Black and White because my brother bought my GODUS for my birthday but I don't like playing Early Access games. However it did remind me that I love god games.
Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth Excellent story line and gameplay. One of the sketchiest most enjoyable games I've played. Also got me into H.P. Lovecraft.
I've been passively playing Solar 2 and Civ V. I don't really want to get involved into any game at the moment so I've been just been relaxing and enjoying myself playing these two games. I really like Solar 2. When I play it, I just sit back in my chair and go from asteroid to massive solar system with eight life planets that destroy anything in its path. I rarely do the missions because I'm having too much fun annihilating other solar systems. Anyway, I would recommend Solar 2 for anyone who needs to unwind a bit. It also has a nice soundtrack.
Legend of Mana, it's an entry in the Mana series for the PS1 that was nothing like the other Mana games of the time (Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, etc). It features 2D sidescrolling combat and long but sporadic and unrelated story arcs. The series itself started off as an offshoot of the Final Fantasy series, interestingly enough. Anyway, Legend of Mana is a huge piece of nostalgia for me. I played it obsessively throughout my childhood and recently fell in love with it again. Some of the best music and art style to come from the PS1 era, in my opinion. It was met with mixed reactions for it's departure from Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3's combat/story. But to me it's one of the best games I've ever played. You can craft your own weapons, create magical instruments to use in battle, raise monsters to fight alongside you, organize the overworld however you like, meet a diverse amount of companions, and so much more. It has breadth and depth for a PS1 game. At the very least, if you're interested, check out some of the art style/music/combat on youtube. It's a wonderful gem of a game, and I hate using the word gem unless it really applies.
Streets Of Rage Remake v5 on PC with a friend. An independent program team called BomberGames spent eight years on this remake of the Streets of Rage series. Streets of Range Remake is a freeware game; it contains almost all characters, enemies, stages and features from the three original games (all enhanced), as well as brand-new features (branching route selection, new moves, new enemies, new stages, new game modes, secrets and cheats to unlock), a remixed soundtrack, and a customizable game engine. Do note that the game itself was taken down, but mirrors can easily be found with a bit of searching. It's a pretty fun beat 'em up game. The only downsides I can think of is the lack of online-coop, and the motorbike and jetski stages are kind of annoying. However, it's still a great game to play, especially if you have a friend with you. (You don't need a friend, but games are always more fun with them, no?)
Grand Theft Auto V on 360. Oh my god. The attention to detail in this game is unparalleled. Los Santos just feels so vibrant and full, with random and unexpected events popping up all the time. I'll take a break from the main storyline and just go for a wander around the city and see the sights. Cue 3 hours gone. Amazing game.
I have GTA V, but I haven't been able to dig into it very much yet, with midterms on my case as of late. I've only heard good things, though. I really like the driving in comparison to GTA IV. It feels more like Sleeping Dogs. Which is a very good thing. The drift is touchy as hell, though...
I bought it a few days ago. A bit slow up until you get to Trevor, where the story really picks up. Good game.
I have been playing Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine, and Metroid Fusion. All 3 of which I never played before. Metroid Prime is absolutely amazing. I feel so into the huge world the game has. Mario Sunshine, whilst having a very colorful look, quickly becomes one of the hardest games I've played. Metroid Fusion is surprisingly in depth for a Gameboy game. oh, and I'm playing GTA V, but that's a bit of a given I suppose
I love Mario Sunshine. Couldn't put it down. Last decent game I played was Limbo. Beautiful!
Man, those are all classics! (Are they classics yet? Might not be old enough, haha.) Honestly, my biggest problem with Super Mario Sunshine was how Mario moved. He just seems so much more jerky and prone to bad turns and freak trick-jumps. Things feel smoother in games like Super Mario 64 and Galaxy. But overall I enjoyed the game, and the F.L.U.U.D was a good crutch for those bad jumps.
The latest Animal Crossing is my go to game still. I don't have as much time to devote to gaming as I used to and I also have a guilty feeling when I pick up my 3DS, like I should be devoting my time to something more productive. Animal Crossing is the best game for that, I've found, so that I can just pick it up for thirty minutes at a time and put it back down again. Although I did play a few hours of one of the Professor Layton games a few nights ago. I like Zelda games, though I don't keep up with many consoles so I haven't played all of them. I never got a Gamecube, so I missed out on Wind Waker. I hope to get a Wii U in the upcoming years and would like to get the HD version of Wind Waker then. Do you think I'll miss out on some of the charm of the game by skipping to the "prettier" version?
Ah, I've had that same problem in terms of gaming and productivity, especially as the difficulty of my classes have started ramping up. It's not fun! As for your question, I would say not at all! I consider this WW the definitive version of the game, and I don't think you'd lose anything for playing it!
I guess it's a pretty normal problem to have. My partner and I have discussed it a bit. She used to be a WoW addict. It feels acceptable to spend hours on silly flash games or Words with Friends, but to pick out a "real" game and play it for a few minutes feels wrong. Fantastic! It'll probably be two years down the line before I actually buy a Wii U, but I'll certainly get Wind Waker when I do. Until then, I'll wait for A Link Between Worlds.
I like how you put that. I can play mobile games on my phone with no problem, but taking the time out to play a game makes it feel like a priority, which may not be something you're okay with. I really hope LBW ends up being great. I've been a fan of the DS Zeldas for a while. To be honest, though, I was hoping for it to be more in the vein of OOT style Zeldas, but I'm fine with a top-down one as well!
I'm the same way with mobile/actual games. And worst of all, I just spend that time anyway going on Reddit or Hubski or something and regretting it afterward :P. As for LBW, I'm definitely excited. The 2D zeldas are some of my favorites, and hopefully LBW isn't going to be an exception. Judging from the videos and screenshots, it looks great. And I'm glad the 2D style is back (the DS games didn't really play like that).
OOT was my first Zelda. Not the first that I ever played, but the first that I ever owned. Before that, my brother was always given video games and I was just allowed to play them. For that reason, I'm pretty excited for LBW. "My" first top down Zelda. I suppose it was only fitting that OOT on the 3DS was also my first portable Zelda game. I've been slowly purchasing every Zelda game available through the eshop but haven't beaten any of them. As for the DS Zelda games, I never really gave them a chance. I haven't even seriously thought about buying them even though I now have a way to play them. Being a lefty, I just find the controls intimidating.
Honestly, the DS games are easily some of the worse titles in the series. Phantom Hourglass is alright (it's pretty much Wind Waker portable). But spirit tracks was just ugh. My left handedness didn't really cause a problem, as the controls were mostly stylus based anyway, and both the d-pad and buttons did the same things. The UI can also be move over to the other side of the screen if need-be. If you think the DS games looked bad for a lefty, go look at Skyward Sword, which you hold the controller like a sword, but there's no lefty option :(. You are in for a treat though, with the Zelda games on the e-shop. The oracles and Link's Awakening are some of my favorites. Zelda 1 and 2 are a bit aged, and not all fans like those particular titles. But I still find them charming :).
I'd never heard the bit about the d-pad and buttons doing the same thing. That does make it sound a bit better. I missed out on Skyward Sword too because I didn't have the, what was it, motion plus or whatever? But I always used the wiimote with my right hand, so I might have been able to do that one anyway. I did boot up one of the Oracle games for a few minutes when I first purchased it before I had to go somewhere (what was I thinking?) and felt like a kid again. I spent so many hours on my Gameboy Color, it was nice to see graphics like that again.
