Extremely busy this week but I've been digging the great Dr. John's latest album, from 2012. Title track on Youtube. God, yes, he hasn't lost his edge at all. EDIT: case in point. This rips.
I also listened to the new Daft Punk single 300 times and went on a spiritual journey to a 24-hour prayer teepee.
I'm new here so I'm not quite sure what everyone is into, but recently I have been listening to a lot of tribal and tropical/Latin bass. Recently I discovered A Tribe Called Red. They are "an all Native American DJ crew from Ottawa Canada" and remix traditional Pow Wow music with contemporary club sounds. Pretty neat to listen to. They just released this great rap tune that I cannot get enough of it. Thornato is out of NY and makes great Latin and Caribbean tracks. I have fallen in love with this track all over again when it randomly came up on my iTunes. Edit: And to add a little more to this, here are two more tracks from Thornato that I love. This first one is probably my favorite track from him, and this second one makes me smile every time I listen to it. The original itself is pretty good, but I love how Thornato brings a worldly or indigenous feel to the track. I think it makes me smile because it feels very Australian and brings me back to when I studied abroad over there. Some other stuff I have been listening to quite a lot lately is DJ Snake who released two massive tracks recently ( one, two ), and this track from Savlem. For some reason that Glitch Hop track reminds me of Oktoberfest and Polka... which is great because I love both :D But I'm sure most of you aren't into that kind of stuff, so hopefully this might interest you a little more. Go Exploring is from Buffalo, and I love his album he put out recently. It doesn't seem like his too well known, but he is definitely an artist I'm going to keep track of.
Welcome! Share what you like and try to convince people to get into it. We certainly don't have a set taste as a community. You'll find me all over the spectrum from throwback voodoo blues (see above) to spoken-word hip hop to post rock. Will be back to listen to some of your links.
Thank you! Haha I'm not sure how successful I'll be at convincing people to listen to some of this weird stuff, but I'll certainly try.
It's out and it's fantastic. One of my favorite releases of the year so far.
Kala is a great album all around. I'm not as big a fan of the rest of her music.
Yeah, MIA is great. I kinda wish her and Diplo would get back together so they can make some more tunes.
I've skipped a few weeks but I definitely have a few for this week. I've played this for a lot of people lately and they are really liking it. Alt-J Also try Breezeblocks, Dissolve Me, and Matilda. New CWK is good. I saw them in concert last week and they played this song spectacularly. I'll wrap it up with Young The Giant who have a solid album all the way through. Hope you enjoy,

One of my pandora channels played a song from the late John Fahey about 6 months ago ... I've been hooked ever since. This is a song I can't get enough of lately ... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf9JTLbA-YY&feature=relmfu I think he might have the worst combover ever.
She's one of my favorite artists. This is how my friend introduced me to her. I appreciate songs with really great lyrics, and most of hers, actually almost without exception, are fantastically well written. There's just so many little things you can pick up on. Please don't pirate her stuff.
Yeah. I try desperately to pay it forward by going to tons of (cheap) live shows and spreading the word about quality music. I just can't justify spending ten bucks on a digital download of this girl's band -- not when I want to buy 4000 other albums just as bad. It sucks.
Mark Zuckerberg owns Spotify? Huh. I don't use it or streaming services like it -- I like having the music I listen to, and I don't like jumping through hoops to get it. I have found that using what.cd, uTorrent and foobar, no one gets any of my information, and I get the music. In turn, I spend a good amount of my time spreading the word on new artists in various ways, and use on live shows the small portion of my income allotted to music-related purchases.
I thought Zuck owned Spotify, but I just looked it up and apparently I was wrong, but Spotify is still pretty friendly with FB. I felt the same way as you about wanting to have my music rather than use a streaming service until I found Rdio. Switched over to ease my conscious (not really) since I've never be great about promoting the stuff that I listen to or going to shows. Really I just switch for the slick interface.
Normally I'll post a record my daughter picks out of the old collection, but this week she was out of town so I selected on my own. It was record store day on Saturday and I picked up two great albums:
Radiohead's The Bends, you can listen to the full album here.
As well as Pavement's Brighten the Corners, you can listen to it all here I ran in a 10 mile race on Saturday and I listened to a bunch of music while on the trail. I started off with Gymnopedie 1 by Erik Satie as introduced to me by Owl in this legendary Hubski post which introduced me to what classical music can be. I continued the run listening to Wilco a Ghost is Born and then stuck with Wilco Radio on Spotify for the rest of the run. Later, after the run I came home and recorded a childrens song, then I listened to some Big Star and followed that with some Sufjan Stevens and some Cypress Hill and finished with some Led Zeppelin. I was all over the place.
I'm gonna listen to every song on that list of Owl's in the next couple of days. Hopefully.Radiohead's The Bends, you can listen to the full album here. As well as Pavement's Brighten the Corners, you can listen to it all here
As if I don't have them both :p
I Can See Mountains - I Play The Fox This dropped this week and I've had it on repeat since. Buffalo's twinkly emo scene is slowly but surely growing.
I've been listening to this too, it's a pretty great album. Between them and All Blondes Go to Heaven you have two really talented twinkle bands.
I've been listening to a lot of Akron/Family. Like a whole lot. Not sure why. Here are some songs about love: Love is Simple, Love, Love, Love (Everyone). And some songs not about love: Many Ghosts, River, and Blessing Force. Also, after editing a friends interview for a band that included a question about a 5 album "desert" playlist, I decided to make my own. I went for breadth, assuming I'd get bored of just one style of music. I'm more happy with it than I thought I would be: Spotify Link
ByMyDelay - Hazy Lights. I liked Cripta 747 Tapes more, and I hope this stripped down acoustic sound isn't a permanent thing, but it's still a fine album. The Infant Cycle - Drop-out Center. Looks like I'm a bit late to the party here, but I'm glad I stumbled across it eventually. Finger of Scorn - A Dawn that Never Comes. Black metal perfection. Only one track on Bandcamp, and it looks like physical albums are sold out, but I guess being luddites is trve kvlt? Edit: That Daft Punk track reminds me of this, but other than both quoting Disco I'm not sure why.
been digging carton's dreamy grunge pop for a while now.
On a side note. When the ability to add two tags was announced, I immediately thought of these posts.
I recently rediscovered Mike Marshall and Darol Anger and their "The Duo" album. My mom had this probably since around the time I was born, so this music is pretty much ingrained into my memory. I really wanted to find something online I could link people to stream or such, but there's nothing from this album. The best I can do is this video which at least gives a sense of it.
Lot's of coding and designing this week so my shits all over the place to keep me alive. Here's some recent songs: Gonjasufi - A Sufi and a Killer Rebelution (SUMMERS COMING!!!) Coastin' - Zion I The Suburbs - Mr Little Jeans Amenamy - Purity Ring Struggla - matisyahu
I agree that the new Daft Punk single is pretty sweet. Thanks for sharing the Dr. John, he's a lifer that will always be worth listening to.
