I have, and will continue to see the muting system as a very negative thing, and will continue to look upon all those who go out of their way to mute others as "assholes" who actively make this site harder to participate in.

I'm super sorry you feel this way. I think the muting/hushing/filtering system is genius. It allows for a nuanced shaping of my hubski experience. Each of us should be able to dial it in as we like. This is a, opt-in environment. We choose to be here.

It's up to each of us to tailor the experience.

I like to have a fair amount of people in my circle that disagree with me (just ask TNG). It makes my life interesting. But I also have limited tolerance for racism, chauvinism, or hate in general. I like knowing that I can shut out certain voices if/when necessary. I like knowing that YOU can tailor YOUR experience. It's fantastic!

And look - having been on the muted end of the kb stick in the past... I get it. That dude posts some INTERESTING SHIT. And it kinda sucks to be locked out of the discussion. But you know what? My life went on. And so will all of ours.

No, the filter and hush systems create an opt-in environment because they only affect the filterer and husher respectively.

The mute function creates an environment where anyone can be silenced (from all views) from criticising another's posts just on their whim.

Why should everyone be allowed to participate 100%?

OftenBen  ·  3041 days ago  ·  link  ·

There are certainly people I will never unblock.

That's kind of the thing that makes the internet great, no?

No matter who you are, who stands against or with you, no matter what you say, what you believe, what you think, you are free to express what you want to express, to make what you want to make.

That's what makes the internet great, that's what allows the massive expansion in content and rapid increase in culture through the internet. It's why you can find so many awesome groups/communities from all over the web.

If you shut down that medium, you turn the internet into a meeting room, a place controlled by a couple of people who have amassed power, and control how things are said, why they are said, and what is and isn't appropriate to say.

Consider the person this whole message was directed to, in just banning a user they have banned their ability to post to the things which the majority of the front pages and similar content on hubski, is made up on.

That's a bad thing, assuming the person never did anything deliberately disruptive or counter to productive discussion.

What? No! Since when has the internet allowed free speech? Just about every major website has content policies in place. Hell, even 4chan has some limits. The internet brought people together and gave them a voice. It did not give them a blank check to do whatever they wanted with that voice. Every website chooses how restrictive It will be, and I'm fine with where hubski has landed.

That's interesting.

On one hand internet companies are pushing for policing/real identities/censoring.

Because if you're hurt by a comment on a social media, you wont stay here, you wont participate, and you wont see the sweet sweet ads. So muting user only serve crass commercialism.

On the other hand, nobody has to put on with others bullshit, if he does not want to. Compare it to real life. If your friend/family/colleague become utterly annoying and/or insufferable you'll cut them out of your life.

I like how mk handled the censure as a per user basis.

Hubski does not decide which user to mute or ban because of bullying, or divergent opinion, anyone decide for himself.

It's very visceral and hurtful. first time I saw I was muted I was pissed. You are rejected, your opinion is seen as irrelevant or hurtful, and the dude muting you is surely a dumbass.

But hey, I get to mute anyone I want, so I'm not left powerless either. And THAT is an awesome feeling. It's like you can Block Obama or Apple on twitter if you want to. Useless, but hey, they cannot annoy you with their propaganda now!

In the end I think it's very intelligent way to handle social media interaction: anyone is in charge of the censure he want to apply. Anything giving power to end user is good in my book.

Conversely, why should it be difficult to accept some people are assholes, and act like their behavior is such a shocking aberration?

bioemerl  ·  3041 days ago  ·  link  ·

My issue is not that people are assholes, it is in muting people, silencing people, because they are assholes.

People don't change by being shut out, they changed by being corrected and yelled at. In the search for a duration system that doesn't make people feel bad, hubski instead made one that isolates and encourages a person to make alt accounts.

cgod  ·  3041 days ago  ·  link  ·

Why should someone else feel any obligation to help someone they don't want to talk to get over their issues. There is a reason people pay good money for counseling, because this shit is tiresome.

Making an alt because someone muted you is just pathetic. Sometimes a person won't be liked, sometimes it won't be fair, sometimes it won't be their fault, sometimes it will all be a big misunderstanding. For fucks sake, a person has to move on with their life and get over these kinds of not even bumps in the road.

Because it's the right thing to do? Because it's best to try and act in a way that results in the best possible community and society?

Making an alt because someone muted you is just pathetic.

And?

cgod  ·  3040 days ago  ·  link  ·

Is this how you live your life? Fixing all the people who are broken? Do you go around showing everyone who is wrong what is right, making all the cruel people gentle, making all the poor sufficiently comfortable, healing the sick?

Everyone well balanced sane person has to draw a line between helping others and maintain their own sanity, health, happiness and welfare. It's really not for you to impose a line in which someone like kleine00 (or anyone else for that matter) has to play ego therapist for someone else.

I hope you have at least PMed qiy and started to help him work through this trauma, by your stated creed it's the least you could do.

Thanks for some context.

It's not that hard to lose track of someone's past if you didn't follow them or feel compelled to mute them. They are just another face in the crowd. I wouldn't have taken the bait if I had realized I was talking to the guy who wants to start fights and then be outraged when he gets muted or whenever muting gets mentioned.

Personally I'd say there is a great lesson to be learned in an argument where you get muted (and learning lessons from arguments seems to be what this fellas all about). It could be observing what it was that caused such an outrageous affront like getting muted to happen and find a way to still learn all those great lessons without it happening next time. I think the real lesson is why such a small thing as getting muted by a guy you hardly even know gets you so upset. Personally I have a hard time even giving a shit about getting muted but to each his own.
