I have been hit or miss with talking on Hubski. I find it hard to join conversations already created. I have had more luck with talking on the IRC, but it is hard to time correctly. When are people often available?
honestly, it's pretty rare we have an active IRC simply because I presume we don't have enough of a critical mass on here yet. Don't hesitate contributiong to existing conversations or starting a new one yourself! This post is already a start ;) You IRC often? Do you like talking to everybody? Only strangers?
Quatrarius, Elizabeth is right, IRC is very hit or miss. It's often out of site, out of mind for me and I would imagine others too. That is why we have been discussing creating/hosting our own Hubski IRC and having it be more readily available at all times on the site. We've only just begun discussing this, and if we do it, it will be post "rewrite." We used to have the #hubskidrinkclub which was usually every other Monday night or so. We would choose a beverage and discuss it. For example "pinot noir, gin, mead, whiskey" have all been past beverages chosen. It starts out as people discussing what we are drinking and then morphs in to general conversation. It was a lot of fun. ecib sort of spearheaded the conversations. We should start that back up again. Former participants include elizabeth, OftenBen, flagamuffin, ecib, humanodon, lil, cW, wasoxygen, mk, b_b, _refugee_,insomniasexx, zebra2, ijustcantanymore, Meriadoc, sounds_sound, cgod, steve (decaf-tea) coffeesp00ns, ButterflyEffect, forwardslash beezneez I know I'm forgetting people. But what say you all? You want to give Hubski Drink Club another go? Who wants to pick a beverage? Any suggestions? Sorry to take over your thread Quatrarius.
A dedicated Hubski IRC would be the best outcome. I do not drink, but any thing that starts speech would be good.
Drink club is great. Pretty much if I see a post saying "I'm on IRC tonigjt," is enough for me to hop on though, drinks are secondary to that. Edit: suggestion as follows: drinks to get you through the dead of winter.
I do miss drink club, but I have to say...Monday night for a drink club is a bit of a tactical error I learned :) I don't think you need a drink club as an excuse to IRC, but it's cool to have a 'topic' that people can sit around and let it wander from there. We never had a drink club IRC where there weren't plenty of people not drinking, or drinking off topic, or just hanging out and wall-flowering. I thought is always flowed pretty well. See what I did there. We should kick it up again on a Friday or Sat night imo...
That all sounds fine to me. Why don't we do a drink club and begin it mid March? Or you can begin it sooner, but I will be out of town till then. You want to own this?
I live on IRC. I have been spoiled by a very active Paradox OT forum on Coldfront IRC. I know all of the people on those channels. I want to have something like that on Hubski. My problem is that the existing conversations on Hubski are very focused on things I do not know about or have interest in. I would love to talk more if I knew what to say.
My tendency in other channels is the opposite of kb's: to keep multi-day conversations going when I and others respond to one another when we happen to be on and active conversations occur when we notice the responses are immediate. As for topics, either start your own or ask questions about others' interests. Ain't no way to hold someone's attention than to get them to talk about themselves and their passions.
IRC is appointment viewing for me; I don't like ignoring it when it's open and it tends to curtail my abilities to do other things. As such, it's not really a place I can dwell. If you were to arrange IRC times, I'd make an effort. If it's "IRC's open whenever y'all" I'd be cautious about giving it my time.
