You know those songs that make you feel invincible, the ones that have you screaming the chorus at 2am as you and your buddies exit the bars? That song that has you playing air guitar and makes you want to scale a building and kiss that girl from your photography class. What song does this for you?
For me, it's The Who's Baba O'riley:
Those power chords!
If we're talking about songs I'm screaming as I exit the bars at 2 AM, then here's my number one, by far: Other top ones:
"kiss that girl from your photography class." Uh oh. Someone's been in the dark room for too long. Any hoo. Good question. Three songs come to mind. They make me pretty happy: Elbow - Mexican Standoff. No song in the last twenty years has made me wish I had a guitar in my hand more than this one. Every. Single. Time.
Spoon - Trouble Come Running. Nice slap in the face opening with an almost casual groove in the middle.
Smashing Pumpkins - Plume. The solo at 1:05 is from Mars and is the epitome of their tonal exceptionalism.
I've got a few for you: Drive down the main street with your middle finger held high outside the window to this one: Lie in bed after a long day of telling the world to fuck itself to this one: Drive home after the late night study session to this one: Kiss the girl in the backseat of the car to this one: Drive down the highway with this cranked: Drink to the good times to this one: Drink to the bad to this one: And to top it off, make joyful noise to this one: ... I'll stop now. gnight TNG.
spoons - lots of good stuff in this thread. I hope somebody turns it into a playlist. In my book; however, you nailed it with Stan Rogers: With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again. And you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
Thanks, lil. I come by my love of Stan Rogers pretty honestly - My dad always had a few tapes in his truck. though your heart may be broken and life about to end no matter what you've lost be it a home, a love, a friend like the Mary Ellen Carter, Rise again.Rise again, rise again
I was in a band in High School with two brothers that played Eruption perfectly. It was their calling card. One played guitar and the other drums. I actually think David Lee Roth is one of the best front men in rock history. Certainly the best rock and roll sheep herder in history.
We evolve beyond the person that we were a minute before. Little by little we advance with each turn. That's how a drill works. Your drill is the drill that will pierce the Heavens. Fun fact, guess where insom's hubskina persona's sunglasses come from e; other stuff
I love Shad. SO good, definitely my kind of hip-hop (says the classical musician. Idunno if that's to his credit or not).
The Feelers - Honey God
"Welcome to the circus, you freaks - come on in"
Kind of a weird choice but lately for me that song has Looking Glass - Catherine Street. Seriously, the end of that song is incredible and so is the chorus. I'm turning into such a country person, it's a problem. But that album is criminally underrated. Honorable mention to Ratt - Round and Round which is a party favorite here.
