This one is for you thenewgreen. I'm popping back in here and there - Hubski is, ultimately, worth the time and I miss some of the discussion with y'all. The year is really starting to weigh on me, or maybe it's the sudden changing of the sunlight. I've learned to work hard and play hard but it's been even harder when you see some friends you haven't seen in 7 months who you used to see every 7 days.
- Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
I am hoping for the best on November 3rd, but I don't think it will heal the fractures we have been enduring. I don't know how you heal that. I don't know how you make people stop drawing guns on each other, stop having road rage against each other, stop demeaning each other in our virtual society, stop the denigration and shaming of science, stop the white fragility that is ruining ourselves, what can you do. I cannot even get a hold of my county council members. Can you?
- I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I hope you've been excellent to each other over the past 6 or so weeks since I last really read this place.
Leonard died just a day or two after the last election. I remember posting on Twitter, back when I used to use Twitter, a simple line of his that summed up how is was feeling: Everybody got this broken feeling like their father or their dog just died. My brother replied like an hour later, "You killed Leonard," and I didn't understand what he meant for a minute. Really, he has a lyric for every way you feel. I don't think there's ever been a songwriter so in touch with not just his own, but everybody's inner dialogue. I am an unabashed Cohen fanboy, if you can't tell. I had the pleasure of seeing him twice, and although he was old at the time, he played for 3+ hours each show (honestly don't remember if there was a sweet break, but I don't think there was), dancing and running around the stage the whole show. So much energy, so much respect for his audience. Here's to hoping I won't be feeling again like my dog just died next week!
Good to see you here my friend. Anybody reading this should listen to the live version of Hallelujah posted ^. I don’t think you could spend 7 minutes in a better way. Wow. What a writer, sure. But also what an amazing performer he was. That’s a voice you trust. That’s a storyteller. As for the election, I’m hopeful that Biden will clean his clock. I’m also hopeful that healing, post election, is possible. Onward!
One of the most wonderful parts of this song, and in my mind this is the best version of “Hallelujah” recorded (yes, better than Jeff Buckley - who did of course record an excellent rendition himself), is that Leonard Cohen himself was Jewish not just in heritage, but in practice. So let’s score a point for elizabeth, lil, someguyfromcanada, and the extended Hubski Canadian family. While there are your typical uses of the word in Judaism and Christianity, I think a non-traditional and probably incorrect (historically, absolutely incorrect) application of the word is that of spiritual healing or the pursuit of spiritual healing - spiritual, not necessarily religious. I find tinges of that in this song.
Nice throwback thread. I think those are the hubski days people miss when they talk about missing the old hubski days. No politics. No current events. Just a really long thread about a song. Fwiw, I don't blame any users for the change. I blame the world. We've been sucked into a vortex that keeps our collective mind fixated on the news. It's good to be reminded that it doesn't have to be that way.
I think it’s okay for us to be fixated on the news and politics. We are living in remarkable times. I can’t imagine people being criticized for talking about facism in the 40’s or the civil war in the 1860’s. The news these days is of consequence. That said, I agree that the post I shared is a great example of Hubski at its best. Every Saturday we have a bonfire with another couple. About 50% of the conversation is politics, 20% of the convo is music/arts related, 20% travel and 10% science/tech. I think this would mirror my ideal Hubski these days.
I certainly miss the Hubski days where we call David Bazan a wuss, that was hilarious. What a great thread!
