So I'm housesitting/dogsitting for my longtime boss and family friend. She's pretty awesome and pretty much shaped me into being a true adult, alcohol wise. She was the first one to shame me into never buying Bud Light or $9 fifths of vodka.
She also has all the gear to make a great cocktail, except the high ball glasses are hiding from me (yes I checked the dishwasher.)
Today was scorchingly hot. Insanely hot. 90F+ at the beach, which means it was probably 110 in the valley. The beach is always cooler, so 90F is INSANE.
I wanted to make something beachy and fun an something I couldn't fuck up. So I made a Mai Tai.
Ron zacappa + Don Q Cristal + Cointreau + Disaronno + Lime Juice. Ice + Shake. Strain. And into the closest glass within reach. It's deliciously alcoholic and perfect for a hot summer night.
Since my payment for housesitting for 3 weeks is booze and food, I'm sure there will be more of these to come. If you have any awesome cocktails you want me to attempt, send them my way. Nothing too too fancy and I prefer my measurements and "about the same" or "a shitton more of" rather than all the silly oz stuff.
:D
Here's a photo of the alcohol cabinet, so get inspired and get me wasted. The one's I'm probably not supposed to touch (much)
Stay away from the Gabbiano Chianti, no es bueno. Have fun, you certainly have enough ingredients to make some great cocktails. Cheers!
I'll put that in the "stay away" bucket with the pep schnapps :P I think I'll try to do one of these a night until I take off to Detroit. Help build my tolerance to kick b_b's butt. Plus sitting on this balcony, listening to the fountain, with a cuddly sleepy dog slobbering on my feet. I'm enjoying life quite a bit right now.
That is one amazingly well lit toy box! I would love to. I'm going to try to go twice. Once in jan or feb and once again in late April.
If you come in February you may get to meet the newest member of the New Green household. He is due late February. -I may need a drink!
Now where's that hangover thread. Rawr So after happily getting a bit intoxicated by myself, my friend and his girlfriend came by. They brought weed and a bag of parrot bay. I don't know what I drank. I know we had some really old scotch, just a bit, and had a pretty length discussion about what it tastes like. To me and his girlfriend (who is ~26yo) it tasted like trees and old people. His quite a bit older and said it tastes like vanilla and tobacco and happiness. I tried to Tennessee honey Jack Daniels and promptly threw it out. That was disgusting. It tasted like chemical honey bees in my soul. I think I am going to take humanodon up and try an old cuban tonight, although the thought of alcohol is pretty horrid right now. I just took 2.5mg of valium so I'm not dying anymore and cleaned up a bit. But there is still a nagging disgusting feeling all over me. The dogs are sleeping with my two friends so I got a nice big dogless bed to myself last night. His girlfriend is obviously dying to get a puppy and he is not happy with me for not warning him there were puppies in the house. LOL!
At first I thought that was a really big lime, but then my eyes adjusted. It's a pretty deceiving picture. I think I have a re-invigorated appreciation of cocktails since visiting a bar in Venice Beach a couple weeks ago that did excellent cocktails. It's a very meticulous thing to make a good drink that doesn't taste like a amalgamation of booze and sugar, but rather something unique. But yeah, right now I'm drinking $8 bourbon so it's not like I'm judging (Zachory Boone is actually damn good for its price).
Oooh tell me the name of said bar! I was at the Alibi Room in Culver a couple weeks ago and had a delicious spicy tequila and mezcal drink that was amazing. Their food was absolutely amazing - if you ever go there get their tacos - but some of their drinks were on the weaker side. I also had a ginger beer and bourbon which was nice, but too much ginger beer and it made my throat tingle.
Do you plan to do any day drinking, or is it strictly night drinking? They are two different beasts and need to be treated as such. For example, you wouldn't drink an Open Grave at 8 a.m.: Basically, you make a long island, but then you add Disaronno, Midori and blue curacao, with a Sprite floater. I've just looked at recipes to confirm, but it appears that the place I used to work made them differently. Anyway, you don't want to drink this as soon as you wake up, because you'll go right back to sleep. And you'd probably want to shake this hard. Uh, looking at your pictures, none of that looks impossible to replace, should one go overboard. Honestly, the bulk of it looks like stuff I'd just drink straight (not the right hand part of the first shelf of picture 3, of course). cgod is a bartender, right? That dude will probably have some good ideas for you.
I work at a bar that serves no long islands or variations on the long island. It keeps the pukers and the kids out, I like the policy. There is a laundry list of other stuff we don't serve, like energy drink's and apple pucker all based on the same theory. We serve huge pores, but not pours of kiddy shit. Personally I'd probably drink the Jamesons neat, with a beer back. I like the Hendrix, at it's price it's an excellent gin. The "Campground" served in a pint glass 4 count of gin half soda half grapefruit juice float of campari orange slice for garnish It's a nice summery drink, people love em. Don't know what the weather was like in your neck of the woods, but it was almost 90 here today. Use tequila for gin and you have a camp slut. Negroni's are nice with hendrix, keep the summer going.
equal parts of each booze served in a rocks glass with orange slice garnish, shake it if you like. Gin Sweet Vermouth Campari For some reason Old Fashions are selling like mad, nice drink but you really want to use a rye whiskey. Actually looking at your booze selection I'd probably make myself a Rusty Nail. Equal parts Drambuie and Scotch on ice, it's one of my favorite drinks, unfortunately you don't see much Drambuie now a days. If you get shitty and really want to have some fun try this ecib classic,
The Three Amigos. serve in three separate shot glasses. 1 half shot of lime jucie 1 shot of tequila 1 shot of tomato or V8 1. take a sip of the lime juice and hold it in your mouth. 2. Drink the tequila shot down with the lime juice. 3. Chase with tomato or V8. 4. Party. It's a sick fun drink, the quality of the tequila really doesn't matter.

my fathers favorite drink. It's a good one.
I have heard various bartenders attribute Mad Men with the rash of Old Fashioneds. I can't remember the last time I had one. I prefer my whiskeys neat. The Campground sounds pretty good. I'll have to give that a whirl. Why do you have to hold the lime juice in your mouth for The Three Amigos?
It's all personal taste. Some people think Jack Daniels is fantastic, personally I think a booze that has a major advertising budget is a sure sign of rotgut, it might be just the thing for you. I prefer rye, but to each his own. I hate when people ask me if a beer is good, I can tell you many things about a beer but whether you like it if I don't know you is beyond me. I'm really into sampling, a small taste of scotch or a few ounces of beer if that's what it takes to find what a person will like is well worth the good will and happiness it engenders. I loath IPA's for the most part, but I understand that you might not, and there is nothing wrong with that (lager man myself). I don't like kiddie shit, I like mature drinks for mature drinkers, It's not about the drink, It's about the drinker.
Probably no day drinking. Although it is one of my favorite pastimes, I have too much on my plate to spend any time during the day + nap + hangover to deal witht hat shit. Even right now im guilty of not finishing all the shit on my friday night todo list
How about insomlovescock ...

... tails. I need to eat. That taco bell at noon ain't cutting it.
The little bottles aren't too expensive and I've found are a great way to make a cocktail without buying 4 huge bottles. You have to find a store that carries them though to get the fancy ones. One day I hope to have an alcohol cabinet, but for now I can't seem to keep the alcohol around for more than a day. I buy a bottle of whatever, we drink it, and then theres no alcohol anymore.
Those are either really small bottles or that is the largest glass, ice-cubes and lime I've ever seen.
Haha yeah they are the itty bitty "pocket rocket" sizes. I think they are the type to get the gift boxes and keep the gifts because there are little bitty bottles all over. Probably 50+ Disaronnos! I know she's a bit of a sales hound / coupon cutter. Proof is the in 25 bottles 750ml of Stoli in the bedroom closet.
