Hi guys, I'm Difference and i'm fairly new to Hubski. I've been here about a week (reddit refugee) and i'm liking the atmosphere here much more than Reddit. I like that opinions aren't a bad thing, and all conversations are level headed.
Anyway, there are things I do miss about Reddit. I miss there being a wider variety of subreddits (tags) especially, the anime tag. I started looking for the anime culture a few days into my Hubski adventure, and was sad to see it was so small. Then I stumbled upon the #animeclub and saw what they were trying to do, and thought it was a cool idea I would like to see brought back..
So, I want to do a few things. Most importantly, I would like to bring #anime to everyone's attention, so that we can breathe some life into the tag. Second, I would like to start watching series as a group, and having discussions. On reddit, I felt like I wasn't able to contribute to a conversation because I hadn't seen several hundred anime. I am a casual viewer, but I do enjoy it.
I would love to hear from you all. Thanks for reading!
A suggestion: don't get too optimistic because I can probably watch 5 hours of TV a week max and at least 4 of them better be something my wife will tolerate. We've watched some crazy stupid bad anime lately. I'll also say that I'm a fan of anime, but a lot of anime is pure shit. Don't pick a pure shit one.
I feel the exact same way. I typically go by the three episode rule, if I think it's trash after 3 episodes I drop it. This kinda creates a problem.. I want to pick a series I haven't watched, and I can't pick one that's too long. So I guess that means we need guidelines, or to run multiple viewings. I know there are GREAT anime, but they are 70+ episodes. It's hard finding amazing content with a 12-25 episode range.
I agree with the movie idea. Most anime movies are pretty good quality, and a movie involves less time dedication than a full series. I remember this imgur album http://m.imgur.com/a/9UGCL from Reddit that had some good suggestions for movies that not everyone has seen, it might be a good place to start.
We've had one a few times before, with limited success. Feel free to start it up again, definitely tag me when you do. Lately, I've finished both seasons of Knights of Sidonia, and most of Psycho Pass. For the uninitiated, Knights of Sidonia is basically Attack on Titan in space with not-Gundams and big fleshy alien tentacle monsters instead of big fleshy giant cannibals. The animation is different to be sure, but it doesn't detract from the series in my opinion. Also soundtrack gets an A+ from me, it's very dynamic and exciting.
I have to get around to watching Attack on Titan sometime soon. Watched my first anime last night with a friend and ended up watching...all of that. Because wow is FLCL an amazing thing to watch. I'd imagine that show is a high point of entry for anime.
I gave Attack on Titan like 7 episodes. I hated it more and more as it dragged on. It seemed like an angry scene kid's spiderman fantasy. I absolutely adore Serial Experiments: Lain but I still haven't finished it, which says a lot about my relationship with anime.
Serial Experiments: Lain was actually what I was going to suggest for the first series. You think we should start small with a movie though, are you think Miyazaki?
Miyazaki! I could do that. Or SE:L because kb is good at recommending things. Really, if it's easily accessible I will try to watch it. Same goes for the #movieclub and once I'm settled in in about 9 days I'll be up for trying to join. Also, kleinbl00 that...makes sense. Many of the people I know who have recommended that show were scene kids for some period of their life.
You aren't liking Psycho Pass? I thought it was fairly good. So what kind of stuff do you like? What anime has pulled you in?
It's not that I don't like it, it's that I'm hella busy and I haven't had time to attach to it. I positively adore madoka magica and consider it one of the finest pieces of filmed entertainment in the history of the medium and it's the same writer. Stuff that I still attach to: - SE: L - Genesis Climber: Mospeada - Madoka Magica - mmmm... I sorta thought Planetes was okay. Again, it didn't keep me going. Stuff I haven't been impressed with: - Full Metal Alchemist - Attack on Titan - DBZ - Pokemon - Sailor Moon
Stuff I haven't been impressed with:
- Full Metal Alchemist
- Attack on Titan
- DBZ
- Pokemon
- Sailor Moon You just shit on my childhood KB. But, all of those have one thing in common: overdramatic. I'll be honest, I haven't see your like list, but I have Madoka and SE:L on my current to watch list. Also, what would you suggest tag wise to begin this? I have at least 5 people who are willing to participate, and that was my goal. I'm thinking about just using the #anime tag, as it has the most followers.
Here's the important take-away: you have stuff from your childhood that you still like. For those of us who grew up with GI Joe and Gobots? Not so much. I think there is a window to get into the above. I probably would have enjoyed the shit out of AoT as an angsty 14-year-old. Unfortunately Reagan was president when I was an angsty 14-year-old so I missed my window. Really, you guys win this one. Animation was shit back in the '80s.
I can't say I disagree. AoT was more recent for me. I had put it off for a long time, not very interested in it, but soooo many people claimed it was brilliant... While I don't think it was brilliant, it was over the top and dramatic, it had cool fight scenes and an at least interesting premise.. But, that's a common thing in anime. Over the top, overstated, idiotic characters. It is so difficult to find an anime that doesn't cost you IQ points, that it puts me off from watching it for months at a time. Too me now, all those shows are terrible. I've grown up and gained awareness of what I like and don't like. DBZ was like a cult for those of us who watched it as a kid. Now, I will only watch it out of nostalgia. I miss those summer nights when I was 11 where I stayed up passed my bedtime to watch it. Do I think the show is good? Hell no... The show is 90% filler. So, it makes me sad to hear you don't have those nostalgic shows to remind you of a more simple time.
Well, they were different shows. 11 and staying up too late was pretty much entirely Dr. Who, because the PBS affiliate would run an entire short series from 11pm until 2am. Star Trek was also on Saturdays at 4:30, which meant an afternoon of working on cars, followed by Star Trek, followed by working on cars. But the after-school stuff? Yeah, it was all shit. You'll notice nobody is nostalgic for it. Ducktales on the outside, but even that was because everything else sucked so hard.
So just the animated tv was crap? I don't know much about 80's tv, but I do know Dr. Who and Star Trek are iconic. Sounds like you guys had better live-action than we do know. Not much in terms of sci-fi series.
KoN is a very good one, actually one of my favorites on Netflix. If you have finished PP yet, be sure to do so! It's fantastic as well, one of my favore Psychological Thrillers (my favorite genre, to be exact) I'm hoping with the influx of people from reddit like myself, it will be easier to do. Honestly, we only need 3-5 committed people who will obtain and actually watch a series. I have high hopes.
Follow along with us! You will have to watch more than one episode on one day now though, because we are two days in.
I mean, there's nothing I can really do now, the ball is set in motion... I could suggest doing something like I did, a group manga session? If you decide to do it, I will at least share it for you. I know your pain, up until a year ago I had dial-up. You have my sympathy and I hope things work out! (the whole series is around 3gb, idk if that might change your outlook)
Have you checked your local public library? You'd be surprised at what you can get there. Most of the libraries I have been to have sections for DVDs, video games, comic books - and even anime/manga.
That's what we are hoping for. I hope someday you may join us!
Go for it. I've been meaning to get into anime a bit more and have lacked the drive/informed sense to be able to parse out the good from the bad. Provided I can access it easily enough, I'll at least promise to give it a shot until other obligations make it time prohibitive.
>Hi guys, I'm Difference and i'm fairly new to Hubski. I've been here about a week (reddit refugee) and i'm liking the atmosphere here much more than Reddit. I'm here because I'm sick of sharing a server with /r/coontown et. al. Hubski people are really nice, but there's not a lot of content here, not that I've found anyways I'm definitely interested. I'm currently watching K-ON! and If anyone wants to start from episode 1 I'll follow along with you. I have a full HD copy of season 1,2 and the movie I can upload somewhere for use. Looking at the old anime club posts tagged #anime though, I don't like their series length limits. let's not do that this time.
The length of the series is the primary problem. We have to all coordinate and watch something the community votes on, and has time for. Most people don't want to commit to a long series. I am definitely open to suggestions.
Is there any Onepiece or Naruto-centric feeds on Hubski? I've yet to find any discussion of these and have to keep going back to the awesome communities on Reddit,
No, unfortunately when it comes to anime, Hubski isn't up to par, trying to change it.
