OftenBen  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: So, who would be interested in reviving Hubski's Anime Club?

We've had one a few times before, with limited success. Feel free to start it up again, definitely tag me when you do.

Lately, I've finished both seasons of Knights of Sidonia, and most of Psycho Pass. For the uninitiated, Knights of Sidonia is basically Attack on Titan in space with not-Gundams and big fleshy alien tentacle monsters instead of big fleshy giant cannibals. The animation is different to be sure, but it doesn't detract from the series in my opinion. Also soundtrack gets an A+ from me, it's very dynamic and exciting.

I have to get around to watching Attack on Titan sometime soon. Watched my first anime last night with a friend and ended up watching...all of that. Because wow is FLCL an amazing thing to watch. I'd imagine that show is a high point of entry for anime.

I gave Attack on Titan like 7 episodes. I hated it more and more as it dragged on. It seemed like an angry scene kid's spiderman fantasy.

I absolutely adore Serial Experiments: Lain but I still haven't finished it, which says a lot about my relationship with anime.

Serial Experiments: Lain was actually what I was going to suggest for the first series. You think we should start small with a movie though, are you think Miyazaki?

ButterflyEffect  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

Miyazaki! I could do that. Or SE:L because kb is good at recommending things. Really, if it's easily accessible I will try to watch it. Same goes for the #movieclub and once I'm settled in in about 9 days I'll be up for trying to join.

Also, kleinbl00 that...makes sense. Many of the people I know who have recommended that show were scene kids for some period of their life.

kleinbl00  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

That show is one endless AFI video.

Difference  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

LOL

kleinbl00  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

We've done Nausicaa.

I've suggested SE:L before. I wouldn't mind being exposed to something I haven't seen; I'm picking my way through Psycho Pass but it isn't really gripping me.

Difference  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

You aren't liking Psycho Pass? I thought it was fairly good.

So what kind of stuff do you like? What anime has pulled you in?

kleinbl00  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

It's not that I don't like it, it's that I'm hella busy and I haven't had time to attach to it. I positively adore madoka magica and consider it one of the finest pieces of filmed entertainment in the history of the medium and it's the same writer.

Stuff that I still attach to:

- SE: L

- Genesis Climber: Mospeada

- Madoka Magica

- mmmm... I sorta thought Planetes was okay. Again, it didn't keep me going.

Stuff I haven't been impressed with:

- Full Metal Alchemist

- Attack on Titan

- DBZ

- Pokemon

- Sailor Moon

pleb  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

Have you given Neon Genises Evangelion a try?

kleinbl00  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

It's so on my list. I hear really good stuff about it.

I also read some Battle Angel Aelita but it wasn't holding my attention... on Kindle, at least. I find I have a lot more time for audiobooks than anything else so...

You just shit on my childhood KB. But, all of those have one thing in common: overdramatic.

I'll be honest, I haven't see your like list, but I have Madoka and SE:L on my current to watch list.

Also, what would you suggest tag wise to begin this? I have at least 5 people who are willing to participate, and that was my goal. I'm thinking about just using the #anime tag, as it has the most followers.

kleinbl00  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

Here's the important take-away: you have stuff from your childhood that you still like. For those of us who grew up with GI Joe and Gobots? Not so much.

I think there is a window to get into the above. I probably would have enjoyed the shit out of AoT as an angsty 14-year-old. Unfortunately Reagan was president when I was an angsty 14-year-old so I missed my window.

Really, you guys win this one. Animation was shit back in the '80s.

Difference  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

I can't say I disagree. AoT was more recent for me. I had put it off for a long time, not very interested in it, but soooo many people claimed it was brilliant...

While I don't think it was brilliant, it was over the top and dramatic, it had cool fight scenes and an at least interesting premise..

But, that's a common thing in anime. Over the top, overstated, idiotic characters. It is so difficult to find an anime that doesn't cost you IQ points, that it puts me off from watching it for months at a time.

Too me now, all those shows are terrible. I've grown up and gained awareness of what I like and don't like. DBZ was like a cult for those of us who watched it as a kid. Now, I will only watch it out of nostalgia. I miss those summer nights when I was 11 where I stayed up passed my bedtime to watch it. Do I think the show is good? Hell no... The show is 90% filler. So, it makes me sad to hear you don't have those nostalgic shows to remind you of a more simple time.

kleinbl00  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

Well, they were different shows. 11 and staying up too late was pretty much entirely Dr. Who, because the PBS affiliate would run an entire short series from 11pm until 2am. Star Trek was also on Saturdays at 4:30, which meant an afternoon of working on cars, followed by Star Trek, followed by working on cars.

But the after-school stuff? Yeah, it was all shit. You'll notice nobody is nostalgic for it. Ducktales on the outside, but even that was because everything else sucked so hard.

user-inactivated  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

Transformers and GI Joe still sell toys and comics. The toys are probably selling to more children than collectors, but the comics have to be mostly nostalgia-bait. Someone has to be nostalgic for that stuff.

kleinbl00  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

Let's not confuse nostalgia for the toys for nostalgia for the TV show. after all, the show was created purely to sell the toys.

Difference  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

So just the animated tv was crap? I don't know much about 80's tv, but I do know Dr. Who and Star Trek are iconic. Sounds like you guys had better live-action than we do know. Not much in terms of sci-fi series.

kleinbl00  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

The good Dr. Whos were all from '72 to about '78. Star Trek ran from '66 to '67.

OftenBen  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

Madoka is actually really dope for a show about magical little girls and a demonic plushy.

Use the tag #animeclub for specific discussion. I'm going to start SE: L soon.

Difference  ·  3418 days ago  ·  link  ·

That's the show that got me into anime lol

KoN is a very good one, actually one of my favorites on Netflix. If you have finished PP yet, be sure to do so! It's fantastic as well, one of my favore Psychological Thrillers (my favorite genre, to be exact)

I'm hoping with the influx of people from reddit like myself, it will be easier to do. Honestly, we only need 3-5 committed people who will obtain and actually watch a series. I have high hopes.
