It is not related, but are either of you German speakers?
To tell the truth, you would not need much brushing up to become my equal. I would be interested in doing that at some point.
Young Fathers is one of my favorite hip-hop groups, eightbitsamurai I'm assuming you've heard of them before, but if not you should give this a listen. I saw them open for Baths in Boston and had never heard of them and was confused to see a hip-hop group opening for a low-key electronic duo, but they brought so much passion and energy that everybody was pumped for the rest of the night.
My dad went to the record store yesterday and returned with some MC5 and some music from Rodriguez. He said he was buying "Detroit music." We listened to that and I introduced him to Sufjan Stevens. We have been listening to a lot of Jim O'rourke, as well as The Velvet Underground. we had a dinner party the other night with some older folks so we played a bunch of Stan Getz, which everyone tends to universally enjoy.
Talk Talk - Taphead From the fantastic album 'Laughing stock,' this is one of my favourites. Starting off as very understated and intimate recording, it transforms into soundscape type sound with an array of more violent sounds and solos traversing over the top. It then fades back into into the melancholic intimacy of the beginning. Beautiful. Martin Stig Anderson - Rabbit at the Airport A composer of ambient and electrocoustic works. If you played the game 'Limbo' then you've heard this guy's work. Absolutely haunting, the contrasts in texture and tone in this piece are something to behold. The video is a piece of art too. Eivind Aarset - Drøbak Saray From the hugely diverse Nu Jazz/Jazz Fusion album 'Sonic Codex'. I really dig how this one begins as a really spacious, almost sneaky sounding piece, before evolving into a wonderful wall of noise.
