A few months ago I posted something about Bon Iver and _refugee_ mentioned that she had a signed vinyl single from a concert she attended...
In a moment of unbelievable kindness and awesomeness - she sent me this amazingly great record.
Thanks so much _refugee_ for this gift! I think you may have unknowingly started a wave of gift giving on the hubski.
How has it been serving you? Mine is in absolutely flawless condition without any maintenance at all over the years. What a tank. It was in storage for a few of them, but I've had it back out and running for the past 5 or so. I've never even replaced the needle but I've been thinking about doing so. I've got one in my online cart on Amazon, but the stock needle is working fine so I haven't seen the real need yet. I'd be wary of a grab too. 12's are probably the most in demand and easiest to move deck on the planet. Plus they stopped making them, so that actually bumped their value on the secondary market. I see them regularly for $500 bucks more or less. When is the last time you saw a piece of mass-produced consumer electronics lose absolutely zero value over the span of 20 years? Pretty crazy.
I've replaced the stylus 4 times now… not because of the unit itself… my kids (like I was when I was young) are fascinated by the noises one can make when you run the stylus on the slip mat… or a finger…. or….. anyway… needless to say - I've moved on to really inexpensive styli until the kids grow up and move out. AND I remove the whole cartridge when not in use. And the inexpensive styli sound great on my system - I don't think I have the setup to hear the difference between cheap and expensive yet.
I'd lend you my old (but decent!) Numark for your shop, on the off chance you're in the Houston area. :)
yah… not worth the risk… there's plenty cheaper, and perfectly acceptable units at thrift stores - or even online for that matter. ION makes some really decent, respectable units. I mean- I'm not DJing… I could probably sell mine and get a cheaper one for the few times per week that I get to listen.
Note to self: get Bon Iver vinyl. It's the Towers single, right? I got a vinyl Atoms for Peace single after their breathtakingly good concert last year. While I don't play vinyl often (I have to use my computer as amplifier), I still enjoy it as a great memorabilia.
That is extremely cool of you _refugee_. I love the idea of gift giving via Hubski. I also like the idea of getting a list of vinyl enthusiasts and doing a record swap. I just got a new turntable and I have asked for a new receiver for my upcoming bday. I tagged this #givehubskigive, feel free to change it to something else, but I like this idea of giving to one another. Doesn't need to be a "formal club" or anything, just so we know what tag to use when posting about it. What a great band to receive a record from too. Very nice.
Aw, I like to mail things. I bought an extra copy of a poetry book (clearly I really wanted to read it; I bought both copies separately) and sent it over to humanodon with his copy of Poetry magazine, the ones we all got for free as a result of NaPoWriMo and agreed to swap. T'weren't no thang. I got to go to the concert for free (I won tickets through a local awesome radio station) and I got two copies of the album, it's just one happens to be signed and steve is all about bon iver, so I figured it might as well as go to a really great home. And that's an awesome tt set-up steve, much better than mine, so I think it's great!
I sent you some hubski mail saying I got it, but if you didn't, thanks! I really like it so far, though I've only read the first poem. The blurb on the back is by Daisy Fried, who wrote My Brother Is Getting Arrested Again which I liked a lot, so check that out if you haven't! I'll be sending out my copies of Poetry as soon as I am able to. If anyone else wants a copy of the January 2014 copy, let me know! I have 6 unspoken for.
