I was absolutely blown away by a one-man-band style folk tune I found this week, Late July by Shakey Graves. Listen to the story at the beginning also. Wonderful. Bonus: he's in Austin!
Another deal, Pull Me Down - Mikky Ekko. Pop stuff, good vocals, pretty relaxing.
Vietnam - No Use In Cryin' Actually, the whole album (an A.merican D.ream) is really fantastic. I bought the LP and it all flows really well. The label's description used a great phrase for it: "[a] cocktail of apocalyptic street blues."
The Strokes came out with a new album: Tap Out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX1inu6yZWY
Call It Fate, Call It Karma - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LLIJkP301E
Tyler, the Creator's new album, Wolf, leaked early and I've listened to it a few times already. I don't listen to very much hip hop and rap (mainly local Seattle groups), but this album is pretty great. I watched the music video for IFHY and was very impressed.
The last line of IFHY reminded me of this post titled: Black Folk Don't Tip
"crazy, who makes me the happiest can make me the saddest". -A thought I've had many a time throughout my life. I hadn't heard Tyler prior to last weeks #weeklymusicthread and I find it intriguing. At times I really like what I'm hearing and at others it doesn't resonate with me.... and I'm glad for that. -If that makes sense?
I don't like too much of his work (Yonkers is a great song and video) but I really like Bimmer off the new album.
The last half of that is pretty dope. I'm looking forward to a listen to that album. I don't think there's any group out there that wears their own swag more than Tyler. He is definitely the master of his universe and the epicenter of an entire teenage culture. If Thom Yorke wore a radiohead tshirt, he'd lose half his fan base.
Been into some doc watson lately. Great music needs no reason ... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qyQOCJ4SUSk
I really enjoyed how earnest that was. Great picking, great calm voice and an old timely tune. Good one.
Michael Karoli & Polly Eltes found this track in a way fucked up slowed down version on the amazing Afrokraut control car mixed tape. Download the tape, it was my mixtape of the year last year.
Only one artist to share. Thanks to a friend: The Drones. Australian band, really god damn good. Just released a new album called I See Seaweed, make yourself happy and check out the title track
Interval by JShih - http://jshih.bandcamp.com/album/interval Blippy, sample happy indie. I recommend trying out "Lost Time" or "Annie".
I've been listening to a good amount of DRGN King lately, to prep for having seen them in concert last night. Don't let this recording fool you, they get really heavy live and put on a great show! The irresistibly catchy Bleached put out an album recently, and I've spent an unhealthy amount of time listening to it. A perfect blend of a female lead with punk and surf rock. It's just in time for Spring.
It's hard to find, but they recently put out a full album, Paragraph Nights.
First track was eery and quiet. Then the next was a lot of sloppy yelling. Not my sort of thing, but that first track was pretty nice. So I'll give the third track a shot... a story, a la Bright Eyes? Huh. Track 4. Really nice-sounding drumwork but again the vocals just not my thing. I feel like this is probably a very good representation of the genre, but it's not my genre. Good rec though.
Ill posts some more later tonight, it's been a good week for listening. I bought Hayden's new album and its great. Thanks again sounds_sound. As a guy still making music in his 30's and with a young kid, a lot of the themes hit home and he does it with a classic Hayden vibe.
Yeah, he's been at it for a while. Bad as They Seem is when I first heard his music.
thenewgreen, if you haven't heard of Shakey Graves before, I bet that track will make you really happy. It's gorgeous.
It did make me happy, thanks man. Interesting story about how he took his name too.
I've been re-listening to Lalo Schiffrin's score to Enter the Dragon. I really like Human Fly. The opening theme makes me pretty happy too. Almost forgot! A track on the soundtrack called Headset Jazz.
Floater - Independence Day has been stuck in my head as of late.
I'd describe 'em as a blend of Pink Floyd and Tool. Their style is pretty varied and their latest album Wake is pretty solid.
Definitely one of their better albums. Waiting for the Sun is on that album; it's the only The Doors cover I've ever heard that was better than the original. Angels in the Flesh and Devils in the Bone is also a great album, bookended by Endless I and Endless II, a couple of their most powerful songs IMO.
