Hubski isnt that big, in social media terms anyway, so I thought I would ask, in the none creepiest , friendliest way, who are you? What do you do? What is your country like. Hoping to make a more permanent home here as you all seen like wonderfull people :)
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies. Really enjoyed your stories! Hopefully some stragglers will pitch in!
I'm a former Laboratory Medicine student in Australia. I decided to change degrees after my university decided that it wanted to force everyone into a year of placement for full time hours for literally zero dollars an hour. As I live away from home this would have destroyed me. I would have completely lost my social life and leisure time, so I decided to change to Molecular Genetics/Biotech only to learn that I can still work in the areas that I want, it may take a little longer but at least I'm not reduced to eating trail mix for 5 days a week. Currently I work in a pathology company, just in Specimen Reception (as lab techs require either a Certificate IV from a community college here, approx~ 2 years in other words, or a BSc.) and Aliquotting (you split samples for other areas). It's average pay and it can be repetitive, but I prefer it immensely to something like McDonalds. I'm also, thankfully, moving back home halfway through this year. It's been an experience living away from home and I'm coming away from it a little more knowledgeable about how to manage money and how hard it is to actually live away from home. Hobby wise I enjoy video games like Starcraft, Baldur's Gate I/II and DOTA2 as well as more traditional tabletop games like D&D and Warhammer (of which I hope to get back into properly once I move home. I also enjoy cars, I drive a Nissan Silvia that I love to death and is something that I will hopefully never give up. I'm in a long term relationship with a woman that I plan to marry one day (probably my early/mid 20's naivety speaking there), we're coming up on 4 years (relatively short to most, but we're going strong and fail to see why not continue). Her dad is a priest of a denomination that I'd rather not mention. Oh lawdy was that a lot, hopefully people don't use this info to steal my CC information or something.
I really enjoyed this. If I was good enough go get a badge it'd be on this comment.
I am an evolutionary anthropology graduate student at the University of Toronto. In the past I have conducted research on chimpanzees in Cameroon and ring-tailed lemurs on St. Catherines Island. I am very interested in evolutionary history (biological, technological, cultural, geological, physical, etc.). I am also an aspiring science writer and write for The Advanced Apes (www.theadvancedapes.com), Scientific American, The People Project, and the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. My perspective as a science writer is informed by the evolutionary sciences and focuses on understanding what big history can teach us about contemporary society and the future of our species. My goal in 2013 is to make progress on my first book about how future technological evolution is likely to restructure our social lives and re-conceptualize what it means to be human.
You just earned yourself a follower! That sounds really interesting. Keep everyone updated!
Also check out his site and podcast. Great stuff.
First-generation American, parents from Peru and the Dominican Republic. I'm currently in school for Biochemical Engineering, though I'm thinking about Civil Engineering instead. I love STEM, but finished my last two years of high school at an arts school, majoring in sculpture. I enjoy sci-fi and fantasy novels, writing, playing D&D with my two gaming groups, video games, table top games, fashion, and dancing. I came to the realization the other day that I'm probably the only person that owns Zumba for the Kinect and Skyrim and plays each just as much as the other.
I'm a geek in Oxford, in the UK. I almost-certainly have the shortest name of anybody you know. By day, I look after the websites of the academic libraries of Oxford University; the rest of the time, I volunteer with a number of charities and non-profits (one of these is a web-based rota management system for helplines and other charitable organisations, and it eats up pretty much my entire life). Occasionally I get some spare time, and I play some video games, or board games, or just have myself a nice glass of whisky. I live in tall, slim house just outside the city with my partner and her husband, in a non-monogamous V-shaped relationship. We've also got a friend living with us at the moment, until the end of the summer when he's hoping to return to study.
Hello, hubski's friends :) I am a self educated computer programmer and web designer from Iran. I studied some courses in hardware engineering. I was living for a short while in the Netherlands and now I live in Malaysia. I did several projects for various companies around world and always looking for new C#/ASP.NET projects to do. I never drink. I like swimming, table tennis, and documentary videos. I believe that there is nothing more interesting than flight and looking to the earth from the plain window. In brief, my job is in my laptop, and it is not important where to live. I just need a nice connection to the internet. my family has 3 members: myself, my dear wife, and my laptop :)
Im a first year physics student from The Netherlands. I enjoy whiskey, literature and cigars. Though I sound like an introvert, im actually a very sociable person who likes to go to bars, enjoy a beer with friends several times a week and meets new people every week! I hope to get into the experimental space equipment field, and since I enjoy writing, id like to write for a scientific website or magazine like arstechnica .
More dutchies? I knew of 2 other than me, now I know of 3. If I may ask, where do you study? And what exactly is the "experimental space equipment field"?
And now I know one dutchy as well! The bastion of Europe it seems we are, since I've mostly americans.. I study applied physics in Eindhoven at the TU\e. Experimental space equipment isn't really a field, but I am really interested in ion engines, deep space communication, energy supply etc. I actually like a lot of fields, but I think this embraces most! Do you study as well?
My guess of experimental space equipment would be new space equipment then? Since you study at the TU/e, that would be the most logical thing. Ion engines and the like sound pretty awesome. I also study in Eindhoven. Electrical engineering is what I do. From computers to electrical engines to power grids. Also great fun. EDIT: We aren't the only ones from Europe. There are some others, but indeed, mostly Americans and Canadians here.
Nope, I am not active at one of the student associations. I figured that those would cost too much time with too little gain. (and really, you only want to join in your first year) Physics is also really interesting, but I think I wouldn't be able to handle it.
I think BBC Focus are looking for writers if that's any help.
I'm a 23 year-old man from Chelyabinsk, Russia. I work night shifts at the hotel, not graduating anything (failed 2 universities and 3 different faculties), love movies, online games and studying acting all by myself thinking about pursuing a career in theatre. There can be a lot of things to be said, going a little deeper into personality, but how can a couple of paragraphs trully describe who you really are? :) So lets keep it short and nice. Hello, everybody!
Hello NotSoTrue, I'm wondering, are there a lot of opportunities for actors in Russia? Is there a vibrant theater scene? Good luck with your endeavors, I have a lot of respect for people that pursue their art as a career.
Good luck, and stick with it. I have a friend that has been in LA for over 10 years working towards becoming a professional actor and only in the last few years has it started to come to fruition. A couple of years ago he was able to quit his job as a bartender and live solely off of the money he earns from acting. He's always loved acting even in high school and it's really nice to see him be able to pursue that which he loves.
19 year-old Israeli soldier here. Also an antitheist, a transhumanist, and an anarchist. Currently studying history, hoping to get a CS degree one day, after my service. Hobbies include roleplaying games, board games, PC games, literature, film and music. I also follow the American NFL. Still trying to figure out how this site works. Looks promising thus far. In terms of content, I'm much more of a lurker. Hoping to contribute in here, if I can.
One of the most interesting replies on the thread. And imagine trying to figure out how it works using your phone browser! Hopefully me and you both come to terms with it.
I'm a secondary school student living in the United Arab Emirates. I guess that means I belong to the abhorred teenage demographic. I'd convey a more lucid representation of myself by describing what I usually do, rather than trying to describe my interests: internet, games, reading, writing, maths exercises, swimming, cooking. I'll perhaps decide to study philosophy if circumstances allow it. Maybe I'll even write a book some day. I must confess that I'm a Theory of Reddit migrant. But what I've so far seen of Hubski has persuaded me to stay.
Now we are on the inside, we can cat spam everyone! Initiate plan r/cats!
Architect living in the West End here :) Got a Masters from UBC. We have a handful of people in Vancouver on Hubski and at least one in Surrey that I'm aware of. Welcome aboard RXG4!
minimum_wage... Is... Just a.... Guy. Note taken.
Looking forward to the Hubski poll results. Seems to be a lot of Brits! Compared to reddit anyway.
If you take away the new, and switch the pot with video games, us two are very similar.
Cheshire. Its just far enough from Manchester and Birmingham for days out.
Makes a change from Reddit. Found more Brits here in a day than reddit in a year.
