im looking for great music that hasnt gotten the recognition it deserves. any style, any year, whatever. and PLEASE, no "oh my, where do i start?" lists of hipster staples. pick ONE that you love, post a link, and lets hear some great tunes. ill start: lemonade by blind melon from the album "soup" http://youtu.be/I7KVrdZIOkg
Here's a great song, by one of my favourite metal musicians: Devin Townsend. Upon hearing this though.. You would not think he is one. At all. Enjoy! http://youtu.be/VmGdF7JKitg
For any jazz-hop or hip hop heads out there, gotta love "The Hop" from A Tribe Called Quest. Can't help but purse my lips and vibe back and forth to it.
No doubt. Some old school De La is worth mentioning too.
There's so much stuff out there in so many different styles that I really can't imagine how someone could possibly dismiss the entire genre. Most people start out with late 80s-early 90s Jazz Rap like De La Soul and the aforementioned ATCQ, but unfortunately a lot of people also get stuck there. Hip Hop evolves exponentially, and there's so much crazy stuff coming out in both the mainstream and underground (terms that are quickly becoming irrelevant) that there's gotta be something relateable to you somewhere. I guess what I'm saying is anyone feel free to ask for suggestions or recommendations. I live for that kind of shit.
What the hell! Why have I ignored Yes for so many years? Big fan of all kinds of progressive rock from around this time but don't own one yes album. You brought the good in this post, at least for me. Not that there isn't other good stuff in this list, but I'm familiar with a few of the knock outs posted (Lee Hazlewood, Jack Logan, Shuggie Otis). If you don't like this iamfight you should at least dip your toe into some progressive rock, there is a lot of it in all kinds of variety.
Thanks. This one is a song that was pretty big at the time, but unless you lived then (mid-1970's), or are a huge Kansas fan, you've likely never heard it. It's too long and too instrumental for mainstream radio airplay. Kansas - Song for America
I love everything by Jeniferever, but the song St. Gallen is one of their finest: http://www.myspace.com/music/player?sid=37316852&ac=now
I posted this the other day, you might enjoy it :) She Za - Tащит
Maggot brain by Funkadelic. Its an incredible song to which few can stand up. First time I heard it I was blown away. Goes great with a glass of whiskey and an armchair! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JOKn33-q4Ao
Some of the best ambient I've heard and I don't know anyone that's heard of it. Hello Calm - Zoë Blade (Also... not a song. A lot of songs...)
Man I was late for this great thread.
My suggestion is from one of my favorite math rock bands Piglet - Little Bubble, Where You Going http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=qTt4UpKVLl8 Something for jazzy math rock fans.
(Sorry if the link is bit messed up, I'm not in my computer)
Delicate Steve - Don't Get Stuck (Proud Elephants) For fans of Ratatat and Popeye.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrpTgV6l27I An amazingly beautiful tune, extremely chilled!
Robert Glasper Experiment - Ah Yeah - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0J7tzHr9eo The whole 'Black Radio' album is brilliant. Fuses Hip-Hop, RnB, Soul and Jazz in a beautiful blend of musical genius.
Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gX1EP6mG-E Personally means a lot to me
This has been their most popular song and the reason for most of their recent success. It even went gold. If I had to suggest another Old Crow Medicine Show song that people may not have heard but is great, I would go with Crazy Eyes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TERyxFfMqDk because of the message it conveys in its lyrics, because it's a great song to train to and because I love parkour //edit: also the game didn't get the credit it deserves. I'm counting that for the song too so it is relevant ;-)
If you're familiar with music in general I'm sure you've even heard of them. Their music has seen play on the radio and in popular media. They aren't my favorite band but they're very solid. They aren't underrated as everyone who listens to them acknowledge how good they are, but they just aren't the sort of main stream band that appeals to everyone. The Deftones - Knife Party It's like a wild trip bundled up into a song. I like how they can blend the heaviness with such an ethereal feel. The song borders from catchy and almost radio-friendly to lilting and strung out gasps to outright screams of terror and and anticipation. #Deftones #getfilthy #rat
I have the same difficulty with Talking Heads. I always want to write "The" Talking Heads. Just swap those Doc Martens out for some Converse All Stars and it's pretty much the same response.
Hell Broke Luce by Tom Waits Got me started on Tom Wait's massive discography.
My favorite version-
El Condor Pasa - 12 girls band More traditional version-
El Condor Pasa
"Deep Seat" by Swervedriver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxBz1KBcpQc
Can't hold us- macklemore actually every song on his album," the heist" is amazing, not only beats but lyrics! Very thought provoking
Rare enough that I had to rehost it on YouTube just to keep it out there. I know nothing about the band themselves, but this song has always struck a chord with me
Progressive Post-Hardcore. Is that a thing? IT'S A THING. I Am Abomination- Since 1776
I don't particularly like rap/hip-hop, but I was really impressed by this song the first time I heard it. For your listening pleasure I present you with Mad Rad-"Underwater"
I really like Two Door Cinema Club's - Handshake, it's really the only song that I've taken time to listen to its lyrics.
http://tinyfolk.muxtape.com/ the song Bubble Guns.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCpCrbCAOBo Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra singing Some Velvet Morning. The orchestral arrangement on this song is just crazy good. Lee wrote this in 1967, and it was an amazingly dark psychedelic departure from his usual country sound. It blows me away.
I don't know if you're a black metal fan, but here's one from the home turf if you're not:
You might have heard it, but 15 Years in Indiana by Jack Logan is masterful.
All right, I don't know how you feel about creative commons music, but this is a great jazz song. I think I will refrain from posting Dutch music here.
Sandro Perri was introduced to me by sounds_sound a while back and I quickly became a fan. Although he chose to post the song "Wolfman", I would say that his song Changes is my favorite that I've heard from him. I love it and I'm guessing you've never heard it. While I know I'm supposed to only pick ONE. I'm going to ad another song that I fucking love of late-- Can't You Tell by Vetiver, which I discovered from a comment that BlueMojo made on This post by Sparsile titled "What are some songs that fill you with joy"? -This song "Can't you tell" is one of my favorite songs I've heard in a very long time. I absolutely love it. Enjoy. Great question.
