It's funny what media from the past counts as nostalgia fodder and what doesn't. Old TV always seems to be nostalgic. Books vary; if it's literary then it's never nostalgia fodder, but otherwise there's a line there and it's awfully squiggly. Lovecraft isn't nostalgic, Manly Wade Wellman is. Music might be even more arbitrary. They still play Alice in Chains on the "new rock" station, but they play Nirvana on the oldies station.
No accounting for taste but I loved that burning map!
Canada Vignettes and Heritage Minutes were awesome. The Cat Came Back and The Hockey Sweater also spring to mind:
The best and most telling is if someone longs for the days of the mixed tape. If they're serous about the pursuit, then they'll know at least a handful of songs that last 30-90 seconds. Why? Because these are the songs that we all used to fill in the ends of our mixed tape album sides. If you were a real champ, you didn't rely on "her majesty" and the like, but you really dug down in to the deep cuts.
Punk bands like The Bouncing Souls, The Dead Milkmen, etc. were great for that. They had a lot of short, often humorous songs that were less than 2 minutes. You know, come to think of it, even though I've always wanted to, I don't think I've ever actually made a complete mix tape. I'd start, just never finish.
