I have just joined the community just a couple of weeks ago, referred by a Reddit post on http://reddit.com/r/circlebroke concerning the future and downfall of Reddit. Pessimistic about the quality of the content on Reddit, I decided to try to assimilate into this community.
I'm curious to see how this community has formed, so share how you found Hubski.
For me, it began about 1272 days ago. I downloaded the HackerNews source code, and modified it to look something like this. The site has changed quite a bit, but my (now our) mission hasn't. Welcome scriptingsoul. FYI, the Primer Page might be helpful if you haven't stumbled upon it yet. Also, the #newtohubski tag has a lot of good resources. In particular insomniasexx has compiled a list of posts that contain useful discussions about Hubski and the new user experience.
Did you notice the K:72 C:50 F:4 in the upper right? That was Karma, Clout, and Followers. Karma was a currency that was transferred into non-spendable Clout when you upvoted a comment or post. Thus, if you ran out of Karma, you couldn't vote until you earned more. I still think it's a nifty approach. If I remember correctly, your 'hubfeed' was comprised of posts from the people you followed and your 'hub' was just your posts. The logo took you to the main feed, which had everything. It looks like gq is there. There was no sharing at this point, and you couldn't follow tags or domains. I believe a post could earn up to 5 +'s. BTW, everyone still has clout, but it isn't shown. Your earning of badges to give is based on it.
I loved clout at first. Became Hubski obsessed and fought my way to #1 for a while until aleph0 blew by me. I really liked greedo, also. Wonder whatever happened to that fcker? Even though Hubski seems to working fine without karma and clout, I think they were a good tool to encourage growth in the early days. As was greedo. That fcker.
Seems like forever ago, doesn't it? No hub-wheels for voting/sharing. There's a Hubski update about email alerts.
I've had http://fuckinghomepage.com bookmarked for ages now. I check in pretty much every day to see what they have to offer. I've found quite a few neat new sites through that method. Guess what today's featured website was? Apparently this is a place for "thoughtful fucking conversation" so I figured I'd create an account and get to conversing.
That's awesome. Today I discovered fuckinghomepage. Btw, we are receiving a good amount of traffic from that site's referrals. They obviously have a pretty large readership. Glad you found us, let me know if you have any questions.
Check out this thread. Lot's of redditors. More recently we've been featured on Mashable...and a Portuguse Mashable knockoff (see here for more info on that: https://hubski.com/pub?id=149662) so where users are coming from has diversified quite a bit lately!
similar answer to mike…. I've known mk for 69.23076% of my life. He invited me to poke around a site he had just built. Then I sent him an old laptop to use as his dev server… then I think the laptop died within days because it was a spectacular pile of garbage. We had a discussion about when hubski got huge, the dev laptop could go in a glass case and people would come from all around to marvel at hubski's humble beginnings… but I'm sure it got recycled instead.
Came over from a thread on reddit way back when (well, half a year ago) and I've been a mostly passive lurker ever since. Even got some neat stickers on my birthday. It's been fun.
It's a weird thing. I rarely remember how I got to websites, but this one was through some obscure forum or blog that I cannot for the life of me remember. It's stranger still because that was my first time on that site, and I have no fucking idea how I got there. I'm bad with details sometimes. I usually forget how or when I met people as well, but I still remember my first week of being around here at least.
Fuckinghomepage.com just got me here by saying this is a place for " thoughtfull fucking conversation" , i hope i wont be disappointed.
Welcome to the site! _refugee_ put together this helpful list of posts for newbies. Also, feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions about the site. A really great resource to ensure you don't miss any great content is the Newsletter. Hope you enjoy the place.

That's where I came from, and I sent hubski to my RL friend. A lot of redditors are turning back around though, since hubski has a pretty different vibe to it (which I actually like a lot better than reddit's). I'm hoping that what happens sometimes on reddit and with popular bands doesn't happen here (classism, I guess?), and that in a year someone isn't badmouthing people who came over during "that reddit fuckup." But it doesn't seem like this community tends to be that childish (I've only been here for a day though).
I was searching DDG for "hot asian pr0n" and hubski.com was at the top. I was a little disappointed when I did not see Reon Kadena, but I got over my disappointment quickly. I came for the non-existent pr0n and stayed for the discourse.
Stumbled upon this on my homepage http://fuckinghomepage.com/ . The homepage is usually good with directing me towards interesting sites and I'm glad it directed me towards this.
Just after the big /r/technology debacle over on reddit, I saw hubski mentioned way down a comment tree, so I decided to check it out. I've been lurking since, really enjoying it. I started to get a bit uncomfortable with Reddit, especially after seeing how it all works; There are moderators who are in charge of hundreds (hundreds!) of subreddits, especially the major ones, and there's a lot of evidence that they are paid to be redditors by marketing firms, they can push viewpoints and quash others, promote certain sites being linked and remove all others. After a while, I started seeing more and more karma farm accounts, the ones that submit hundreds of links a day to build up their karma and mature their account before selling it off for marketing purposes. It just started to grind on me, and eventually I ended up unsubscribing from dozens of subreddits, but the new wave of defaults came, and the smaller subreddits got default status, and I started to see the same things happen again.
Saw a comment on Reddit about Hubski, and checked it out.
I found it in a similar way a long time ago. I haven't been as active here as I should be because I've started moderating some subreddits. I've improved my Reddit experience a lot by being extremely picky about the subreddits I participate in. I think eventually I'll even get sick of those and move on to Hubski full-time.
Fellow reddit immigrant checking in. Found it much the same way you did. I'll say this, Hubski values good content and good discussion over all else. There was an... Episode a few weeks ago that demonstrated that this community is not tolerant of mud-slinging, personal attacks or flame. In addition, because of the interface, such things aren't really possible in the normal sense of the words. In the grand tradition of teh internetz, Lurk More first of all. Also follow people who seem interesting, don't be afraid to ask questions. Welcome
