This is the third time I have written this post. Here are the two previous: SoH11 SoH12
Going by pub ids, the first State of Husbki was after 12431 posts, and the second was after 41509 more posts. As this post's id is 125341, we've had 83832 posts since the last. If our growth rate holds, that suggests the next State of Hubski post should be around id 295000.
But, whether the SoH14 post id is 150000 or 1500000, I'll be here writing it.
Back in 2011, when I downloaded news.arc and booted up a clone of Hacker News, it was not my intention to build the next big thing. I had two goals: 1) to teach myself a language other than FORTRAN, and 2) to create a place that I wanted to exist. The first goal was for my benefit, the second goal had something to do with you.
Hubski is not about being a better aggregator. Contrary to popular opinion, Hubski is not about getting right what Reddit gets wrong. Hubski is not the next generation of social media.
Hubski is about good conversations over thought-provoking content.
We do not lack for information. However, despite the technical possibilities, we do suffer from a paucity of places where intelligent people can get together and synthesize this world about us. There is no reason we should only watch and listen.
Most of you that have found your way here know why Hubski exists.
In our effort to adapt and improve the site, we don't always get things right. However, we know what our goal is. That will not change.
This year has been a good one. We have gained many new members that have had a positive influence on the site, and are still graced by many of the old cast that continue to make Hubski the unique place it is. I count many of you as my friends. We had a couple of really great Hubski meetups in 2013, and plans are being made for more in 2014. (BTW b_b and I will likely be in Rotterdam in early May.)
This year forwardslash and insomniasexx joined the Hubski team! It might not be readily apparent, but running this site takes a significant amount of time and effort. Not only have forwardslash and insomniasexx brought invaluable energy and ability to Hubski, but the fact that they 'get it' goes a long way to ensure that we continue to work towards our goal. (They are also extremely fun to be around.) I must also say that we all should thank thenewgreen. The energy and passion that he has given to Hubski has more to do with where are now than any other factor.
We have some interesting things planned for this coming year, some of which we will start discussing soon.
Thanks for being part of Hubski in 2013. The State of Hubski is good this New Years Eve of 2013.
Happy New Year, Hubski!
p.s. I initially drafted this post with a bunch of shout-outs, but it started getting ridiculous. Happy New Year to each and every one of you!
p.p.s. If you haven't already, check out the Best of Hubski: 2013.
Happy New Year mk! It's been a wild ride thus far and I'm excited for 2014. We have a great team in b_b, insomniasexx and forwardslash. -They all pass the fishing boat test. It's just after midnight here in NC and I'm having a whiskey and raising the glass to you three and to all of the people on Hubski that make me come back day in and day out to see what's shaking. We've got a great crew going on the site right now and like you, I consider many of them friends. A shout out to sounds_sound for all of his help in 2013 as well. I know that I shout-out too much and I promise that in 2014 I'll do less of it, but I want to take a moment and say what I'm excited for in 2014: In 2014 I'm looking forward to making more podcasts/videos with steve and making more collaborative music with ecib, T-Dog, jonaswildman, mrjasonetaylor, fuffle and bgood79. More writing prompts from lil, participating in more photo challenges with elizabeth and Aksalon, more Geography photo challenges/essays from NotPhil -those are seriously cool and hopefully some more microwave recipes from him too. I look forward to more thought provoking commentary from kleinbl00 and some more photo-essays -the area 51 one still stands out as a favorite. I look forward to some more progressive poems from coffeesp00ns, more videos from theadvancedapes, more poetry from humanodon, mike and _refugee_, more evox's from cW, more essay's from ecib, more weekly music threads from bfv, more baseball from flagamuffin, more writing from louderwords, more Taibbi from his fan-boy scrimetime, more beekeeping updates from briandmyers, more stories of vigilantly justice and definitely more music posts from cgod, more travel updates from veen, I hope to hang once more with Meriadoc -and by the way I finished Blood Meridian and we never discussed it :) I look forward to hearing more from ButterflyEffect about how his label is doing, from minimum_wage about all things anarchy, from delta about programming and philosophy etc, I want to hear more music from AshShields, rezzeJ, BLOB_CASTLE and countless others... I could go on and on. Our little community here is full of extremely interesting, creative and active people. I hope to meet more of you in person in 2014. It really has been a blast thus far. One last shout-out: It's unbelievable how much time and effort mk puts in to Hubski and he does so very quietly. I've never met someone with more integrity, I assure you that Hubski is in good hands. Thanks Mark. Cheers all and happy new year!
Happy New year to all of you. Thenewgreen, it's 12:51 and I think you've been typing that since 12:01. Please tell me you aren't on a smartphone ;) Just finished watching a collage of NYC ball drops since 1976. Sorta wishing I could go back in time where at least the crowds in Time Square weren't covered in advertising. Such is life. Seeing all the "in-camera" crowd wearing ridiculous blue foam Nivea branded top hats was a bit much for me. Who could have guessed just how pervasive advertising had gotten in what feels like such a short time. Hope everyone is heading into 2014 with the wind at their back.
That's the way a year should start. Champagne goes nicely with cheese and lasagna so you should be good to go pal! Wish I could help you drink it, I really do. I'm about to have a sip of Redemption Rye (no ice) in your honor sir. Cheers!
Hmmm, I'm not sure that I agree with your hypothesis, but I'm glad you're feeling well. I've enjoyed good champagne that others have purchased and have been worse for the wear the next day.
Happy new year to you and to everyone else! Thanks for all work that you and everyone else puts into this site. I look forward to spending 2014 talking to all of you a lot more, and maybe even meeting some people!
I'm gonna support flag by saying that you too make hubski what it is. Sometimes I think half of the posts here are yours. I can only look forward in delight to a full year of hubski instead of just the 135 days I've been here (sidenote: what the hell, only 3 months?). Keep up the good work, let's make the next year even better than the last!
edit: Thank you.(sidenote: what the hell, only 3 months?)
-I know, that's crazy. You've been a big part of the community in those three months. I'm glad you found us and definitely look forward to more veenspace.
Cheers! And the bookclub is on it's way tomorrow! Being with family ended up taking more time than I thought it would and I ended up spending that day with my uncle out at the shooting range, so I figured another week couldn't hurt, especially if anyone ended up as busy as I did.
I enjoyed the book but I don't think I'll be rushing to read any more McCarthy any time soon. Glad you were able to hang with family and shoot.
Just found this place today. Been a Redditor for a while now but increasingly I find myself frustrated by the excess moderation of the main subs and the ongoing Meta dramas that spill over from one sub reddit to another fueled by annoying vote brigades. Still learning the ropes here but I hope to see the site grow.
Welcome! Feel free to pm me if you have any questions about the site. I put together this list a while back of some Hubski tips and remembrances that may be of use to you. Enjoy and Happy New Year!
This was an intriguing read - as someone who spends a lot of time thinking about the kinds of webs and networks that the future's going to have, I liked the insight into your intent for Hubski. The way things are going, though, there's a danger that the intended use may be lost. (E.g. I've seen people asking "what's the next thing?" and being answered with "Hubski".)
Thankfully, there are measures that can be taken to mitigate the 'negative' effects of reaching the so-called "critical mass" of users. I've got a textfile or two on that myself, might be able to clean some of them up and hopefully invite some discussion on the topic.
By all means, do so. Those conversations are often lively ones, and we are always open to suggestions.Thankfully, there are measures that can be taken to mitigate the 'negative' effects of reaching the so-called "critical mass" of users. Thank you for the feedback jasrandal, it's appreciated. Did the tutorial show when you joined? Also, we have an "about" page and "FAQ" page at the bottom of your feed. But what this means to me is that they're not well placed for new users. Good feedback. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to help. Glad you found us!
