Inspired by this post, which bands do you love that you think nobody would know? For me it would either have to be jonwayne, this basement producer of fine electronic beats, or Delicate Steve, who plays with guitar sounds in an incredibly unique way.
Most people don't know Animals as Leaders, I wouldn't really say that nobody knows them but their genre of music is obscure enough that people outside of that scene have never heard of them. People generally don't know about Baroness
I´m really into the math-rock genre and I have a lot of favorite bands because of this genere. I think I will go with Piglet, they play very close to jazz, have very technical sounds and rhythms. It´s very enjoyble. Here you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OllEOofj4O8 Battles is a close second, they are experimental math-rock using weird sounds that carry out through out the song. It´s fucking weird, here you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiWpP_dO_Ho
I don´t think there really is a connection. I read somewhere that when the music started coming out, music blogs thought the music sounded very mathematical and complicated so they started calling it that. Heres the wiki page which talks about how the bands use different time signatures and such. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Math_rock
Battles wouldn't be a band that '"nobody knows about." Gloss Drop peaked at 98 on the Billboard 200, and both of the albums I remember being mentioned as some of the best albums of the year.
You´re right, it´s probably because none of my friends know them and whenever there´s an opportunity to mention them I take it.
That has to be Globular: http://globular.bandcamp.com/
Dr. Strangely Strange but Oddly Normal. Check out 'Halcyon Days' and 'Donniebrook Fair' to start with. Psychedelic, guitar-head band from the 70's.
I've heard of most of the stuff in this thread... Anyway, I have yet to meet someone that's heard of Kakkmaddafakka, but that's probably because I live in America and not northern Europe. I'm still mentioning them because their 2004 album Down To Earth has been among my most played since I heard it a couple years ago. My pick of the superunderground is Electrochemical Reaction (around 100 likes on facebook and about 1000 views on most popular video), psychedelic semielectronic funk.
Pomplamoose They have some of their own songs, but I really love their cover of September
At this point, as I've gotten a distinct love for neo 80's music (due in no small part to Hotline Miami), I'd have to go with Perturbator. Here's one of his recent releases, Welcome to Nocturne City
Also, The Dropkick Murpheys The only band of the genre I enjoy.
Awolnation No one besides people who have seen the head cam video really know them that well.
Here's a few off the top of my head: Laid back hip hop, I'd try Sweatshop Union. Awesomely chilled band with a harder edge. Look up the songs John Lennon or Nuclear Family For Ska music, try Random Hand or Capdown. Anger Management by Random Hand is amazing. For indie, take a look at Django Django or The Joy Formidable. For a bit of heavier rock try Pulled Apart By Horses. I'd suggest Yeah Buddy or Back To The Fuck Yeah.
Not really a band, more of a singer. Well known in the Arab world, her name is Majida El Roumi. She worked with the likes of Nizar Qabbani and Melhem Barakat, respectively very notorious Arab poet and singer. I really encourage anyone who isn't afraid to listen to foreign music to check her out. This is one of her songs: Koun Sadiqi (Be my Friend), and here's Kalimat (Words), one of her most known songs.
Son of Dave - one man and his blues. 2 great solo albums
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxr9_Z2n8uc He also writes a column for the Stool Pigeon
Andrew Paul Regan, formerly Pagan Wanderer Lu. Intelligent adult indietronica, whatever that means. His latest album, The Signal And The Noise, is my most-listened-to album of 2012: it's full of cynicism and religion and cryptography and philosophy, and it's wonderful.
I never know why Pain of Salvation never got the fame it deserves. Technically amazing, yes, but all the proficiency is kept under the hood in favor of having soul in the music.
Cold Body Radiation and Sun Devoured Earth, I've always liked that post-rock/black metal/shoegaze kind of sound. For just black metal I'd go with Wodensthrone, they are just my cup of tea.
If you're looking for hip-hop that isn't what you hear on the radio, definitely Astronautalis. Galaxie 500 takes the cake for me though. Reverby, jangly indie rock from the late 80's/early 90's.
Zechs Marquise Their newish album is amazing. It's mostly instrumental, experimental, and psychedelic. If you like The Mars Volta you'll probably enjoy this. Also, Mystery Skulls! I enjoy head grooving to this a bunch.
I wouldn't say nobody knows about him, but I really like Tor, a Canadian hip hop/trip hop producer. He became a lot more popular making mashups of Sufjan Stevens matched with various emcees, for example this, with Blackalicious. He signed to Emancipator's very recently established label, Loci Records and released an album, Drum Therapy. The sound is something like a darker version of Bonobo, who you will certainly know if you are into downtempo/trip hop.
I would go with Dark Mean. I listened to a lot of their first recordings that they released on an EP and loved them. Then, they didn't release anything for a couple of years, so I could only listen the few songs of theirs that I had. Almost two years ago, they finally came out with their CD. It had new, finalized versions of all the songs I had grown close to and new material as well. This album has a special place in my heart.
Robert Glasper Experiemtent. Blending Hip-Hop, RnB, Soul and Jazz. They're brilliant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-0JZlrk4xA
maus haus, they opened for The Dodos and were pretty good: http://maushaus.bandcamp.com/
I really like Kitten. They're a dance-rock kind of band (so not very progressive or experimental), but the lead vocalist's voice is beautiful to me and her lyricism definitely stands out. Definitely check them out if you're into dark-wave in any way. • G#
• Cut It Out
Jakil, a band who went to my high school a few years back. They play some really good pop-rock, and they're fantastic when performing live.
