Let's see your work!
I like to draw occasionally, and suspect that if I kept at it I could actually become good at it. I am working on making a more concerted effort. I like to draw animals, usually for some reason African/"safari" animals. A truly talented and trained friend once told me she thought I could be a good cartoonist. I agree - I don't think I am great at getting the real-life exact details down (yet), but I think I manage to convey an image well enough.
You be an artist bb. It looks so real it made me sneeze.
My daughter is just starting to add details like teeth and pupils and lips to her drawings. It's awesomely creepy.
Well, kind of. I don't really consider myself an "artist" but I enjoy sketching, etc. and have a certain amount of natural aptitude that I could develop further if I put my back into it, "further" meaning just "further" and not "into soul-shattering self-expression or a lucrative career." I only sit down and put something together once in a very great while anymore. I'm just pleased when I can make things look like things. Anyway, some example drawings/compositions and stuff. My aesthetic is kind of weird... I like the half-finished, rough, juxtaposed look, and I prefer mixed media, but I also like minimalism. Nothing I "finish" ever even appears polished, which is partially due to preference (and partially to ineptitude, and partially to impatience). The last one is the most recent, and just a cellphone photo... once I'm fine with the level of detail the plan is to scan, darken the lines, print copies to experiment with and then add some watercolor highlights in red and yellow.
You are an artist by my estimation. Those are awesome. You should post that last one again once completed.
mk this comment says it was make 19 minutes ago, yet I replied to it 4 days ago. Also, I received a new email notification for it.
As I recall, I saved my comment above as a draft first, then edited it and saved to publish it. I noticed today that it was still orange, despite having received a reply. I edited the comment again and threw the switch to publish it again. I have another comment which is both in draft status and has been shared.
I love this idea. Your work is great, very creative. Back in the day JakobVirgil used to post a series of comics drawn on cocktail napkins. -it's good to have constraints for art sometimes. Edit: it's very cool that we have known each other for so long now and I've only just discovered this aspect of you. What other mysteries you hiding?
I'm no artist, but shameless plug for some of my wife's work
Been drawing a bit recently: A Raccoon: Mimic: A Giant Rat soldier (still might add more detail here): The rat and mimic were the first 2 drawings that I did completely on my own with no reference image (beyond looking at pictures of actual rats on Wikipedia). I do occasional art dumps on my blog as well. Coincidentally, art dumps are the only thing I've done on the blog yet. P.S. Notice the Art Academy logo on the mimic? I got it about a year ago but didn't really do the lessons until recently. Surprisingly powerful tools and good lessons that give a good foundation for visual artistry. Would highly recommend it if you've a 3DS or WiiU, if just for the tools.
Nice work, I particularly like the raccoon. Also, thanks for proudly displaying the "follow me on Hubski" button on your blog. -very cool
I am an inept no talent artist in every sense of the word. (Except for found object art which I am good at.) But there was a time when I hosted a dinner party every week for about eight to ten. One day I was walking home and there was an art store that I had walked by hundreds of times but had never bothered to check it out. But this day I decided to. I ended up buying about $1,000 of brushes, canvases, oils, tools and an easel. So that week it became a rule at the dinner parties that you could not leave until you made a painting. It was amazing seeing what people came up with. Everyone got to take their creations home so I do not have any examples but whether they were good or not was irrelevant. It was creative and unexpected and fun. Here is the one example that I still have. Oils, Gin, tonic and doobie ash. Technically it is multimedium as there is a photo and part of a newspaper article buried somewhere under that oil. Yeah I already admitted I was no talent so....
That sounds like a lot of fun. I would love to attend a party like that. Hell, I may throw a party like that. Great idea
It's been a long-standing idea of mine that the label "artist" must not be applied solely to those who paint or draw. Art is a concept so encompassing that, indeed, it would be silly to do so. Is a writer not an artist? Is a singer not? Is a sculptor not? And that's not getting into the fact that "art" means "a craft", not just "a craft which produces a result that's sensually-pleasing to most people"... I have nothing against painters or drawers (I see how goofy this word look in the context, and I present no alternative). It seems important to me to label things in a way they're due.
My grandmother hooks rugs. She's an awesome artist. Art is expression and it comes in many forms, no doubt. I'm just looking for someone to collaborate with on some visual art.
I'm pretty sure it will be alright. I don't think anyone here is going to think that I don't consider writers or others artists. Your "realization" is pretty much the common understanding. Cheers!
