That is some really good stuff. You might like the Sheepdogs. They were the first unsigned band ever on the cover of Rolling Stone. I thought they were just OK until I saw them live. I actually went to see the band that was opening for them and they won me over with their performance.
That wasn't half bad at all. They have a good throwback sounds. Know what's funny? A lot of people I talk to share that sentiment about opening acts they see. Maybe it's because when you know nothing about the opening act, you don't have any expectations, so more often than not you find yourself pleasantly surprised instead of let down. Or maybe, it's because opening acts tend to be hungry for success, so they play from the heart, making for a better performance overall.I actually went to see the band that was opening for them and they won me over with their performance.
Know what's funny? Two of my favorite movies ever I had never heard of before my buddy asked the clerk to pick a couple of flicks out for us. So when we got home before I even read the liner notes, he popped in Reservoir Dogs. We were both WTF is going on here and blown away. Then watched Robert Altman's The Player and was blown away again then finished the best Sunday movie day ever.
Oh my. That's another opening scene that must be seen. The longest single camera tracking shot in movie history I believe. Just outpacing the opening of Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, which Fred Ward mentions during the scene. The whole movie is very meta and hilarious.
Coheed and Cambria have a new album. I've liked a few songs from C&C for a while, but have recently started listening to them a lot after hearing Here to Mars. Haven't listened to all of "The Color Before the Sun" but what I have heard thus far it is amazing. Here's Here to Mars And here's some classic Coheed and Cambria, Welcome Home Finally, thanks to the Rock Band 4 playlist, I first knowingly heard Short Skirt/Long Jacket by Cake. It was used as the theme song for Chuck (which is a show that I heartily recommend; it's on Netflix) but I never heard the actual song until it came up on the RB4 playlist and haven't been able to shake it since.
That's easily the best Coheed and Cambria song I've heard in a long time. They were the first band I was ever frenetic about, this was in the days leading up to No World for Tomorrow. Their first three albums are still classics to me, but nothing since has come close to touching them.
While walking around Chicago I listened to Steve Gunn's Way Out Weather album in entirety. Great album, thanks for the recommendation sounds_sound.
Locktender: Screamo band with low vocals you don't hear too often in the genre. Really beautiful lyrics based on different artists/writers. Super post-rocky/shoegazy instrumentals. Troubled Coast: Post-hardcore, I love the vocals and again, incredible lyrics. The instruments are all really well structured, melodic, and switch seamlessly between heavy and soft. Tilian: a pop project from the singer of Dance Gavin Dance and ex-Tides of Man. Really catchy and well written. I'm not a huge pop fan, but I love the guy's voice.
https://charlotontheweb.bandcamp.com/album/out-of-orbit Great Japanese band, very hard to categorize. Just give them a spin.
I've been enjoying Christian Scott's new album. He's certainly one of the jazz greats of today and is taking the genre to entirely new places. Also, I've been shedding the ultimate jazz tune to shed. Great workout.
I've been digging back into southern rap lately and today I dug into some classic H-Town rappers and found a pretty new K-Rino album that had some good tracks on it. Album seems alright so far but I haven't had it on full loop long enough to judge if it has legs.
Kind of disappointed I had never heard of The National Wake before this weekend. As far as politically motivated punk bands go, this band seems very important. A mixed-race punk band in South Africa while apartheid was still going on and had the government against them. They made some amazing music too, finding their record was a great out of the blue find.
Recently I've been pretty obsessed with Joywave and their album How Do You Feel Now? I was even able to see them during their tour a couple weeks ago. My friend bought me a vinyl copy of the album and we were able to meet with the band got it signed
