Oh man, I've been listening to this small band out of Sydney called Castlecomer. Their music is really just full of life, give it a listen!
There have been some amazing human accomplishments. We put a man on the moon, rovers on mars and a robot on an asteroid. We created democracy, we've scaled Mt. Everest and built the great pyramids in Egypt. Man has circumnavigated the earth in a kayak, developed vaccines and we've cloned a sheep. But NONE of these accomplishments can touch bfv's achievement of bringing us to 100 weeks of music! A very sincere thank you bfv for your efforts. As somebody that hosts initiatives on Hubski often, I know how difficult it can be to keep something going. Well done! Also, it is only fitting to shout out to flagamuffin for getting this party started 100 weeks ago. Thanks guys! Might I suggest to anyone that has enjoyed these threads to throw bfv some badges. This week I listened to a lot of Beck for some reason:
I Fight Dragons. They are pretty rocking. A solid mixup of 90s rock and chiptune music. Brings me back to high school. Check em out.
Hey they were on this cool thing http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/various_artists_f2/weezer___the_8_bit_album/
I go to SoundCloud for most of my music nowadays. JACK댄스( is putting out some great mixes, such as this one for Frosty is a series of grime remixes by various labels and DJs (btw if the Hangul doesn't render properly on your computer... get it checked). Found a great radio show the other day - audiophilia by PatRock It's broadcast on KTUH, which is the University of Hawaii student radio station. He has such a relaxing radio voice and the choices are eclectic as hell. My only complaint is that only the first hour of each (three hour!) show is uploaded onto SoundCloud. I need to make a cron job or something that rips the entire show whenever it airs and saves it to my hard drive, because due to timezones I will never be able to tune in live without sacrificing half a night's sleep. I have the same problem with livestreamed tinychat club nights (e.g. SPF420 and ecchiparty). It sucks when everything's working to EST so in order to listen I have to stay up til 5am. Why can't I be a cool internet music cat? I'm also obsessed with Akiko Yano (矢野顕子). She is a Japanese singer-songwriter who has been recording since the 1970s. Among many others, she has recorded and performed with Yellow Magic Orchestra whose releases so influential and members so prolific that it deserves its own post so I will not elaborate further. Her singing style and voice have been compared to Kate Bush. I don't understand the lyrics (even with Google Translate which is pretty crap for translating between very different languages such as English and Japanese) but she has a quirky and whimsical delivery which I find charming, despite the language barrier. Catchy, too.
I'd read that post. Never heard of her or the Yellow Magic Orchestra, but I'm a Kate Bush fan so this is something I should probably listen to.Among many others, she has recorded and performed with Yellow Magic Orchestra whose releases so influential and members so prolific that it deserves its own post so I will not elaborate further.
The exciting new and flourishing genre of oceangrunge, which sprung up from post-vaporwave but have now developed a whole different aesthetic, here's my favourites https://zhutchka.bandcamp.com/album/sea-ep https://anthos.bandcamp.com/album/the-sea-whence-i-came https://petitelocke.bandcamp.com/releases
Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra. Masta Conga does very good work, everyone should buy this record!
http://afrolatinvintageorchestraubiq.bandcamp.com/album/pulsion Also I've been digging the new Flying Lotus album, the new Dr. John joint, and am willing to listen to anyone who can explain the new Aphex Twin to me. I don't not like it...I'm just confused.
Thank you all for a great thread!
Cool stuff bfv! I don't think I've had time to download anything new this week, but I've jammed to Twentyone Pilots a lot while biking around. Kitchen Sink One of the best albums I've ever heard. It took a few listens to realize how brilliant the back half is, though.
SUPER GAME JAM SoundTrack - doseone & Kozilek, makes me wish 8bit was back :(
I recently watched a John Hodgman standup which had a brief performance by Cynthia Hopkins, whom I had never heard of before. Her music is beautiful and so, so poetic. Here are some of the lyrics from the song "Resist the Tide": And so it takes a lot to combine atoms in such a way That they resist the lure of that darkness that lurks around the edges of every dayThings fall apart, everything tends to decay
