Bezos' response is equally rough. The quote that gets me specifically is this:
He is definitely aware of the hostile conditions, but is taking the same approach to his business as JK Simmons' character in Whiplash.“I strongly believe that anyone working in a company that really is like the one described in the NYT would be crazy to stay. I know I would leave such a company.”
Speaking as a 23 year old living in a one-bedroom apartment in the northern-NJ suburbs: There's no way I'd be able to afford it were it not for my girlfriend who lives with and splits the rent with me. In my area (which I can't leave due to work and her school obligations), there aren't any one-bedroom spaces available for less than $1.1k per month. The apartment hunting experience has really soured us on home-ownership in the future. I can't even imagine what it must be like a few miles southeast in NYC is like for someone my age, and living in San Francisco is a downright horrifying concept.
They were giving so many things away during that keynote, I was expecting the iPad Air to be free as well.
I'm super into a process called databending. Recently I've been using it on movie stills. Here's Amy Adams in 'The Master:' More here if you're interested!
Honestly, I can only see this as a "Far Cry in the bathroom" device. The controller looks absolutely unwieldy, and I can't really see any kind of niche that this could fit into. I'm expecting a crash and burn here.
I think the mobile version can really only hit the same target market that the desktop version already has. The openness of Linux is always enticing, and I love some of the ideas they presented here (especially the ability to give 100% of your screen space to whatever app is open), but I'm not sure if it can even put a dent in the world's mobile market. That said, I really hope they prove me wrong.
I would love if every ten years or so, there was either a revision or a got of some sort to keep it updated. I have no idea how this could be implemented without being catastrophic, but that's why I'm not working in Washington DC.
As someone who just joined Hubski within the past week, I feel almost privileged to have stumbled across such a great community. There's a level of quality and community here that I have yet to find anywhere else on the net, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the new year brings as we continue to grow. So thanks to everyone for being unbelievably welcoming to myself and the others who just joined, and a Happy New Year to all!
Great idea!
I think the point that was made regarding the speech is equally true for this article. Some people may watch that clip and read the article and find them both incredibly motivating, but many others will just wonder why Alec Baldwin and David Wong are being such asshats about everything. I'm the kind of guy who could use a bit more motivation in my life, but I sure as hell got fired up watching that speech. I'm not sure what that says about me as a person, but I feel a bit better about myself nonetheless.
Just joined up! My steam name is the same as my Hubski name, so feel free to add me as well!
I just picked up smoking this year. Basically all of the managers at my place of employment were smokers so being a bit of a kiss-ass at times I started, just so I could go out for the frequent 'Focus Breaks' as they're called. What I've come to learn is that smokers have a really interesting mentality about it. Not everyone uses it for the same reasons. I started to get closer to my bosses, but now I use it to make friends. I can stand outside and ask whoever else is out there about what films they've watched recently or really anything. There's still a barrier between you and everyone else, but it's much easier to climb over that insecurity when you have to borrow a guys lighter or he bums a cigarette from you. The openness is something I never would have expected.
I really think Google is the only safe bet. From there, I'd say all of the news media outlets will realistically still be around considering...well...the buckets of cash they all possess.
