Today we've added a new type of feed to Hubski: chatter.
We thought it would be interesting if we could see what the people that we are follow are talking about. Chatter does this.
Under the 'my hubski' menu, you can now a link named 'chatter'. It will take you there.
As always, feedback is much appreciated.
p.s. You can now find your 'control panel' link by clicking on your name at the top of the menu.
What goes into determining what shows up in chatter? Are the comments that appear related to how many comments/views its received?
Think of it as a stream of comments, chronologically, of all the people you're following. No algorithm. No filter. The fastest way to see the newest comments.
I could be wrong, but I would guess that after a being on site for a short time, users who select people to follow do so primarily due to conversation and comments those users have made, -not what links they have posted. I don't know what the percentage could be, but I'd bet more than 50%. So this makes sense in that light, especially given that conversations often digress from the topic of the linked post if there is one. Anybody who thinks it's somewhat pointless should give it at whirl. I think they will be surprised.
Chatter is awesome. Nice work as always mk What are the chances that your infrastructure could handle and that you could make quora style live updating? I think it would really add to the chatter feature. It's nice to know what people are talking about right now. And you could go to conversation and see it update in real time. Really invites people to come join (i.e. the feedback loop is shorter)
I mean I think its cool because I can go there and see what people are commenting on very recently so I can get involved on something that isn't stale or rather really fresh. I also just read this interesting quora answer (coincedental) and I think it made a good point about how short the feedback loop is and how it has helped it gain traction.
I kind of like it already. Sometimes I just want to read articles, but sometimes I'm interested in reading user discussion. This kind of easily lets me know where people are "chatting".
I think you'll find yourself using it. We had something similar on our end, and we kept finding ourselves using it. As the people you follow often comment on posts without sharing, it can lead to finding good discussions you might otherwise have missed. Give it some time, and see how it plays out for you.
It might be useful if you get bored and want to know what people are talking about. You may have followed someone because you liked how they contributed to discussion. In that case, looking for what they've commented on is as relevant as what they share/post. Or, maybe you're bored and used up your feed, or are bored of your feed. Looking at comments would stimulate you differently, if you were interested. If you see a comment you'd like to know the context to, there's a link to the post right there. Some people could consider chatter to be a superior feed: in your normal feed, those were posts users were interested in enough to share; in chatter they were interested enough to say something about it.
