I could be wrong, but I would guess that after a being on site for a short time, users who select people to follow do so primarily due to conversation and comments those users have made, -not what links they have posted. I don't know what the percentage could be, but I'd bet more than 50%. So this makes sense in that light, especially given that conversations often digress from the topic of the linked post if there is one. Anybody who thinks it's somewhat pointless should give it at whirl. I think they will be surprised.
