Public face isn't even vaguely new. BIll Ayers retired as a professor of education at the University of Chicago. Bernardine Dohrn taught law at Northwestern. Sidney Lumet directed Judd Hirsch, Christine Lahti, River Phoenix and Martha Plimpton in a "two thumbs up" dramatization of their attempt to lead a normal life while being on the run for killing someone by blowing up the building he was cleaning. Meanwhile It isn't even misty water-colored memories. Fuckin' no less than Haskel Wexler shot a documentary about the Weather Underground while they were on the run and Tom Wolfe wrote half a book making fun of Leonard Bernstein for supporting the Panthers. Days of Rage is basically about how privileged white kids get to blow up whatever they want while black kids get murdered for writing letters to Castro. In 1969, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover described the party as "the greatest threat to the internal security of the country." He developed and supervised an extensive counterintelligence program (COINTELPRO) of surveillance, infiltration, perjury, police harassment, and many other tactics, designed to undermine Panther leadership, incriminate and assassinate party members, discredit and criminalize the Party, and drain organizational resources and manpower. The program was responsible for the assassination of Fred Hampton, and is accused of assassinating other Black Panther members, including Mark Clark.
Cleaning? The guy was a physicist. (don't tell b_b)... blowing up the building he was cleaning.
Right you are. In the movie he was a janitor. It's annoying. The movie is pretty good. And Bernardine Dohrn will never be Christine Lahti. Fun fact: the script is by Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal's mom. Popular culture's acceptance of the Weathermen as "rascally kids" runs pretty deep.
Considerably more relatable, good call, Gyllenhalls' mom.In the movie he was a janitor.
Sure, domestic terrorism, per se, isn't new. I was talking specifically about these geniuses who at one time went by "Michigan Militia." They were an underground faction in the 90s, and really didn't like to draw attention to themselves. The swinging dick act is a new development for them.
I almost posted a single statement to accompany the post: "It gets a bit more embarrassing to be white with each passing day." Edit: which was certainly true before all this, but damn, we're on an accelerated timeline now.
We live in a time where the two aren’t mutually exclusive. P.S. it’s not a great time.
I would argue that we citizens of Michigan bear some responsibility for these events. If you had asked me even when I was a small child if the country schools had a good chance of producing kids with the same kind of education and critical thinking skills as the city schools I would have told you that's not possible. The only way that things like this can be prevented from happening again is by reinvesting in our educational infrastructure and providing the children of assault rifle wielding bumpkins with more and better education.
That's pretty much Elizabeth Warren's argument, yeah. The fundamental problem is that one political party benefits when the majority of the populace is uneducated, fearful and deprived. The other benefits when the majority of the populace is educated, empathetic and secure. The former party has historically supported wealth concentration while the latter party has historically supported wealth distribution. Stable equilibrium has been destroyed and both parties are weak. That's how we got here.
