I've been obsessed with Saint-Saëns first Violin Sonata (D minor) recently. I'm a cellist, so I know my cello sonatas, but not so much violin. I love Saint-Saëns' concertos, cello stuff...but I'd never listened to his works for violin! Woah! It's incredible If you only have time for one movement check out the fourth. Also Rachmaninov's first Piano Trio in G minor. My trio is rehearsing this for a performance in a few weeks, so I've been listening/practicing/reading it non-stop and I still love it. Delightful. Also, non-classical guilty pleasure of the week: Lean by VHS Collection was the background music to a video someone sent me and it's oddly catchy. I've never heard of them but that's not saying much. :)
LIZZO. No idea who she is, or anything other than the Spotify playlist I listed to her on, but ... goodgoddamn, she's got some serious groove. Juice is the one everyone knows. It's good. Better audio-only. Cuz I Love You is an amazing blues tune... no... wait... old school rap... no, no, hang on... soul... nope. Blues. Or... I dunno, but it's fucking awesome, and the wallofsound production on it is such a welcome throwback! Love this track. Boys is just a funk groovebomb, with a powerful woman killin' it. Makes me think of Missy Elliott. Tempo, in fact, features Missy Elliott. And some lyrical gymnastics that are just a pleasure to listen to. Lizzo. She's rockin' me now.
Been listening to a lot of Vampire Weekend. I'm going to go see them in Chicago.
I bought me some music off of BandCamp yesterday, mainly synthwave. * New Model and Dangerous Days by PERTURBATOR (the latter has NSFW-ish cover art) * Mega Drive by Mega Drive Also some not-synthwave: * Requiem for Hell and Rays of Darkness by MONO
Random stuff that I don't think I would have listened to a few years ago, but somehow are on my radar now. Pink Sweat$- No idea how I first stumbled on him. Turns out though, his Volume 1 EP is perfect to listen to on ultra quiet as I drift off for a nap. Volume 2 isn't half bad either. All of his songs though suffer from that annoying Spotify trend where the songs are around the two minute mark, start quick without much buildup, and end just as quickly. It's makes them all feel more than a bit lacking. Ollie Wride- I probably would have skipped past him if I didn't listen to and enjoy FM-84 first. For better or worse, his music is pure throwback to '80s romance type pop, but he does it pretty alright in my opinion. Between you and me, synthwave is a fun genre to listen to, but without vocalists it's hard to tell one artist from another, which is probably part of the reason FM-84 stood out to me and why I was willing to give this guy a shot. Had a third artist who's name I can't remember at the moment. When I do, I'll come back and edit this.
