A geek politician. Cool!

Is your PM a good politician otherwise?

He's a beast at PR, that's for sure.

I'm not clear on his policies but I really like the social retoric of feminism, anti-racism (yay syrian refugees!), aboriginal issues, pro-choice, knowledge and science based economy as opposed to resource based.

It's a nice change for Harper to say the least. I have no clue how sustainable economically it all is, but it is a nice shift in the narrative at least :) I hope he can execute onnit (too soon to tell)/and Canada grows into its potential!

    (yay syrian refugees!)

Is Canada taking any, at the moment? All I heard in the news was Germany, France and the Scandiwigean countries.

knowledge and science based economy as opposed to resource based.

That sounds really cool. I'm looking forward to seeing this happen. Is there any obvious progress in this area so far (lil, maybe you know)?

He's been in office for less than a year so not many policy changes yet and it's too soon to say anything but steps have been taken in the right direction and I like the rhetoric. Now we gotta see if it's actually economically viable.

Here's a nice site that details his actions vs his electoral promises: https://www.trudeaumetre.ca/

99 flights have brought the 26,506 refugees that have arrived so far.

Stats for 2015 say that Germany has provided refugee status to 57k+ people from Syria, with 103k+ applicants from the same country. That's impressive score for Canada, considering that Germany is by far the most-desired place for the refugees, according to statistics.

Do you know where those flights originated from? I'm curious whether they come from Syria itself, which sounds very dangerous for the pilots and the personnel, if any is present, or from Europe.

It appears that most applications were processed in Jordan and Lebanon..

Germany also has about three times the population of Canada and is not an ocean away. It amazes me that many of the families here have been willing to even go to small towns, even in the Far North. eg. Yellowknife.

Can you imagine a more jarring transition that from Syria to Northern Canada? I mean I get it... the choice is clear between destruction and terror to a pretty dang nice, safe, modern, (did I mention safe?) country.... but hella colder than they are used to.

Yelloknife... Just 11k+ population, and they get to have what amounts to skyscrapers. In Russia, 10k population gives you wooden houses, some utilities and "big malls" two-storey-high tops.

It amazes me that many of the families here have been willing to even go to small towns

You assume they either have much choice or are going to be fussy enough.

So far, he is trying to reach many neglected sectors - aboriginal people for example. In fact, the Minister of Justice is an aboriginal woman.

In fact, the Minister of Justice is an aboriginal woman.

How common is it for the aboriginal people in Canada to reach high positions, in politics or otherwise?

someguyfromcanada  ·  3139 days ago  ·  link  ·

Not very. There have only been 38 Aboriginal Members of Parliament ever.

It should also be noted that Trudeau once viciously beat up Aboriginal former Senator Patrick Brazeau. :)

Judging by the way you but a smily emoticon there, I presume it was something of a mutually-agreed-upon fight, like MMA in the ring.

It was a charity boxing match. And they were actually boxing.
