Heard blockbuster night part 2 on Silicon Valley and loved it. Played this album at least once a day since. I was never huge into hip hop, outside of Beastie Boys when I was younger, but I can't stop listening to this. Makes for a great running soundtrack, and just in general to get pumped up. I stuck more to punk and rock when I was younger so I guess I kind of missed out on hiphop entirely, so what can you recommend for me?
Antwon is some weird shit. Should check out Michael Christmas as well. Also, Flying Lotus's rap persona is Captain Murphy. This video is NSFW:
well you like RTJ so you should check their solo projects you have a lot of backlog to work through. Outkast Wu-Tang, really, anything from NYC during the golden era. A Tribe Called Quest Mos Def and assorted aliases
MF Doom Madlib Talib Kweli Joe Budden (especially the Mood Muzik tapes) Joel Ortiz there's some interesting younger guys out now too. Flatbush Zombies Joey Badass and some others in Pro Era The Underachievers are hit and miss Action Bronson Charles Hamilton (never developed into what he could have)
Check out features and side projects under different names. I don't know where you're located, but search for local talent as well. there are many many many good rappers that people have no idea exist.
eightbitsamurai, nowaypablo, galen, ButterflyEffect -Any recommendations for Kerbobotat? I know people were using #hiphophubski as a tag for a while. -Maybe check that link out Kerbobotat. Good luck!
Xavier Wulf Nas Bones J. Cole Not really very similar to Run the Jewels in my mind, but ynno. Options.
MF DOOM, King Geedorah, Madvillain, or any other MF DOOM project. You might like BADBADNOTGOOD's recent collab with Ghostface Killah called Sour Soul.
If you're looking for something similar to RTJ2, I would recommend checking out Killer Mike's album 'R.A.P Music' or EL-P's album 'Cancer 4 Cure'. Because these albums are by the people behind RTJ2, they keep a similar feel. I would also definitely recommend checking out the Freddie Gibbs & Madlib album 'PiƱata', which I consider the best hip hop album to come out in years. I've also been listening to Tech N9Ne's album 'Special Effects' on a loop lately, it carries a raw energy very similar to RTJ2, but I find it is much more experimental in terms of collaborating with other genres of music. However, this is just a brief shortlist that I though might best answer your question. I only got into HipHop in the last 4 years or so, sticking more to punk and rock as well. I think what's best is to find the artists and songs you like, explore their catalogue and then check out the people who feature on their songs. Hip Hop is a great collaborative community and you can find a lot of new/veteran artists through features on tracks. Hope this helps!
