- Prof Hawking says the primitive forms of artificial intelligence developed so far have already proved very useful, but he fears the consequences of creating something that can match or surpass humans. "It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate," he said. "Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete, and would be superseded."
I have never done this on Hubski before. Rest assured I feel bad about it.
I have no doubt this will happen. We will create something that will quickly become smarter than us, and take over. The next stage of evolution will be man-made. I'm strangely ok with this. Humans are pitifully weak as it is. Bags of skin that leak fluid constantly and have to tended to, filled with food and liquid, and die much too soon. I feel a little bit sad that I'm not one of the machines that will rule the world in the next generation, probably around the year 2045 but by 2099 according to Ray Kurzweil. But maybe they'll include us in their plans. Meh. "Life" goes on, yes?
As you may know I believe that there is only a Singular "Singularity" :) What I meant was that it is entirely possible that we are under observation by other Sentients. The Human Eye has only recently been opened. Anyway, the thought occurred in the shower this morning that we merely need to restrict access to (a) morphoplastic technologies, and (b) mind influencing interfaces to keep our mechanical servants in line.
I think that this is precisely why so many people envision a future where our biology is complimented or enhanced by technology. It could be that our ability to learn and improve our own systems is an advantage that purely artificial intelligence couldn't match. Perhaps there's some virtue in our "meat?"
