Let's say I post a question that continues to generate discussion. I'm informed when people respond to the original post, but sometimes relevant replies are posted to comments. The commentator is probably informed, but not the original poster - is that right? In particular, I'm talking about discussion here that showed up five days after the original post. Is there any way to give the original poster the option of being informed about replies to comments. I'm aware that replies to comments are not always of interest to the original poster.
It is a difficult problem, because often one won't care about a thread once it has deviated and meandered into a space far from the original thread. Notifications, therefore, could get cumbersome. We created "chatter" to help users see what people they follow are saying, and so encourage more engagement. I suppose it would be easy to add comments on posts that you have submitted to the chatter feed regardless of whether you follow them. There wouldn't be a notification in that case, but at least you would have a record that is easy to find. What do you think?
Also, if you're interested in the continuing discussion that occurs in a thread you will get notifications if you "save" the post. I'll sometimes get a notification and wonder "why the heck did I get this?" And then remember that I had "saved" that post. Hope this helps lil
so for example - I only saw this comment because it included a shout-out to me. I NOW see that I can "save" a thread of conversation. I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT. So I just "saved" b_b's comment. If someone else responds to b_b (rather than to the original post) then in theory, I should get a notification - right? so that's my solution. If I had saved wrenauld's comment - I would have seen wilson's response to it. and by the way, further down on that thread there was a comment from you (TNG) about a friend of yours that I never saw. I'll go back and look. Maybe it was posted as a reply to someone else.
I would just save the entire post if you're interested in all activity on that post.
Do you know that you can click on the "orange wheel" to the right of your name to be taken to all of your notifications? Once you "dismiss" them all the orange wheel will cease being orange.
