When Cortes did 10 toe taps into a 3 second leg-lift, I did lol. Cortes got Ohtani on the honest pitch over the plate at 80 mph, Ohtani swung way too early, his second strike. I bet he's over-drilled with 90+ mph fastballs.
Ohtani has been incredible this season. And he seems so chill, I'm thrilled.
I went to a double-header AA minors baseball game(s) last week (one was a make-up game), and I gotta say, I'm worried about baseball. I hope it's just a local thing, but attendance is down to maybe only 15% of what it once was ~20 years ago.
For flagamuffin.
That’s hilarious. Nice to see something that’s interesting about baseball to a casual observer. Bummer that baseball is fading. To me, baseball is a game with high barriers to entry, for observers and players. For one, there are a boatload of rules. It’s slow and unpredictable in length. I know a soccer match will go 90minutes, and a person must understand Offsides. To play, soccer, a space and a ball is needed. My 13 year old is playing his third season of baseball and we’re all beginning to enjoy the intricacies of baseball. He’s not a great hitter, but cerebral and knows how to select a pitch, earning lots of walks and a few base hits. It’s fun to hear him break down each of his at-bats. “Dad, I noticed the pitcher tense up as soon as it was a full count. I figured he-d try too hard on his next pitch and throw the fourth ball, and he did. With so many options in modern sport, It’s far less likely the next kid will stick with the game of baseball long enough to enjoy it as my son does.
Nestor Cortes is my favorite mustached Cuban baseball player. He’s also one of two players on the Yankees worth watching this year, and is maybe the only player on that team having any fun. They’re a bunch of underperforming, unfun players to watch. Ohtani is the exact opposite and I’ll watch an Angels game just to see him play. Thank god for Jomboy because MLB sucks at marketing the game.
Cortes caught covid fully vaxxed: If anyone with it went to the All-Star game, uh ohhhh :|. MLB's high quality contact tracing could give us some insight into what sort of interaction(s) is enough to spread whatever variant this turns out to be through a vaccinated population. And insights into the sensitivity thresholds of the testing, etc. Bummer, tho.M.L.B. postponed the game because three Yankees pitchers — Nestor Cortes Jr., Jonathan Loaisiga and Wandy Peralta, each of whom is vaccinated — had tested positive for the coronavirus. General Manager Brian Cashman said three other players had tested positive through multiple rapid tests, and that the team expected those players’ laboratory test results to also come back positive.
Yeah there were multiple people at the AA minors game I overheard say "Jomboy". If you're below 50 and you watch baseball, you know who he is. I don't even really watch baseball, but I played a bit, growing up, so I know almost every rule. Edit: Well, I know the basics, and enough to know that there are a bunch of hella obscure rules that don't ever require consultation but for once every few years because they govern incredibly unlikely scenarios. Ohtani just knocked his 32nd out of the park this afternoon. Guy's seriously one of the nicest players in the league, too:
Been too busy to pay attention to any sports the last few years, so thank you for sharing this. I just went down a Shohei Ohtani wormhole. What a badass.
