Shit. I didn't know about the whole depression thing. That's pretty fuxked up. But . . . Isn't his the whole reason they want to become a state? So they can have lawmakers in U.S. congress? Cause I could have sworn they voted on something to that effect in 2012. Edit: That was also a really good article. Thanks for sharing that.Puerto Rico’s citizens are essentially disenfranchised as far as the federal government’s concerned: They don’t have voting representation in Congress, and they can’t vote in the presidential election. So Congress had no incentive to pay attention to them. But because they’re still citizens, it’s easy for Puerto Ricans to “emigrate” to the mainland US — where they can immediately register to vote, and where their votes really do count.
The only thing more frustrating than that video is the fact that not much has changed. The hope in Puerto Rico is that Hillary fulfills her promise while in office. It's really surreal to visit there, and watch my own family suffer to such a degree. Luckily, most of my family has left the island.
DC is not and should not be a contender for statehood, the deal was that no state should be above the rest and a special district would allow the Capital, where all Government functions are run, to actually be under Government control, therefore a special district was created to house the capital of the country and was supposedly chosen by George Washington himself. Puerto Rico and other minor territories on the other hand should be given the chance if they want it.
