Since when have debates been about actually facts? 1960? 1970? These days Americans expect to see drama, yelling screaming and rude behavior. Just look at how news talk is structured now to see the new normal
Yelling, screaming and rude behavior are only effective when you have a receptive audience. More than half the country isn't buying what Trump is selling and to win a debate with a democrat he'll have to actually look intelligent. Trump can't look intelligent.

Apparently, he understands what monetary policy is, so that's kind of like being intelligent. Also, to the surprise of many, he isn't actively trying to destabilize the US. Also kinda smart.
