The point I was trying to make is that it's possible to do without any new laws. There are so many laws out there that if you wanted to do something like this all you have to do is find an existing law and actually enforce it.

It's not, though. "I'm taking money from sovereign citizens because of a trade dispute with their parent government" is pretty new.

I don't think you can send money to North Korea legally either. Now we don't have an embargo against Mexico but that's basically what this would be.

What he's saying here, kind of sloppily I might add, is that we have leverage against Mexico. He's also failing to acknowledge that they have leverage against us too. Could you force Mexico to pay for the wall? Sure you probably could, is it a good idea to humiliate them in such a way? Probably not as it would cost you a lot more. It's like a giant game of political chicken. Which in my limited knowledge is what trip has always been good at.

To me this discussion can be summarized like this:

Trump: I'm going to build a wall with Mexico

opposition: you can't we won't let you

Trump: I can do it without you it will here is an example how and there are probably 10 other ways if that doesn't work

Opposition: gasp! If you did that it would be a catastrophe

Trump: so then don't stand in my way.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Idk, that's for the voters to decide in November.

I'm comfortable saying that it is very bad now, basically for the reasons you outlined: It is extremely simplistic and wide-reaching game of political chicken with the people of each country in the passenger seats, with the aim of getting a big wall built between the two.

EDIT: As an aside, can you click 'update' in your settings? I think you have an edge case bug in your profile that can be resolved by doing so. You don't have to change any settings, but it will likely resolve it. ATM people get a 502 when they reply to your comments. Sorry!

snoodog  ·  2947 days ago  ·  link  ·

I think its updated. Let me know if that works or the bug is still there.

mk  ·  2947 days ago  ·  link  ·

I think I found the issue. Check your mail.

snoodog  ·  2947 days ago  ·  link  ·

Cool. I fixed it lets see what happens. Interestingly enough I got email updates correctly before the fix.

mk  ·  2947 days ago  ·  link  ·

Well that's interesting. BTW no 502.

snoodog  ·  2947 days ago  ·  link  ·

Cool

I'll edit this comment with the results!

EDIT: You're definitely still causing a 502 error :/

kingmudsy  ·  2947 days ago  ·  link  ·

Actually, that's one of the first thing defectors of North Korea figure out how to do.

As far as legality goes, it seems like South Korea doesn't really care all that much. Not that this is all that valuable in talking of US politics, but it's an interesting articles!

This is actually probably the best reason why the proposal would be a bad idea. The money flow wouldn't be stopped it would just get rerouted through intermediary and con men.

I think you might be getting a 502 error in your profile as well btw. I get a blank page when i reply.

He's not saying we have leverage against Mexico: he's saying we have leverage against MEXICANS. Those are radically disparate ideas. Here's the actual discussion:

TRUMP: "I'm going to build a wall with Mexico."

OPPOSITION: "You haven't even thought through the mechanics on that."

TRUMP: "I have thoughts that touch on mechanics."

OPPOSITION: "But they only serve to demonstrate your lack of comprehension of the kind of solution you're proposing, let alone its implementation."

Just for shits'n'giggles, google "send money to North Korea."

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but twisting laws to accomplish something other than they originally intended has always bothered me a little bit. It feels like circumnavigating the process we're supposed to use...
