Wow. That's a very insightful piece. I think you might be on to something...the loneliness at the top might be a prison entirely of their own making. Just the fact that they define themselves as at 'the top' is part of the problem. Humanity has so much to offer, everybody has a story to tell, and an insight to give. No need to build artificial moats. I get that for business, your network probably needs to be mostly comprised of people with means to add value, that makes perfect sense to me, but life isn't all business. Anyway, that was a cool post, take my first badge!

How does one give a badge? The FAQ says, if you see "+ !", that's how you do it - but I don't see "+ !" anywhere, or anything like it. I just earned a badge last week, so maybe I'm not eligible to use it yet, dunno.

Just like you earn a badge, you also have to earn the right to give a badge away. Keeps them doubly precious I think :)
The badge system depends on how many full revolutions have been made around your hubwheel, the icon in the upper right between your handle and the number of followers you have. The more shares, badges and upvotes (for lack of a better word) you receive, your hubwheel gets fuller until it completes a circle. For every full circle, you earn the right to give out a badge. Then the +! icon will appear next to posts.

I do have a badge, according to "about briandmyers"; I was wondering why I don't see the "+ !" anywhere. Or maybe I'm dumb - I've received a badge, but not yet the right to bestow one...

You nailed it... you have received a badge from a fellow hubskier but you have not had a full rotation yet of your hubwheel and have not earned a badge to give. Make sense? Btw, receiving a badge from a fellow hubskier is far cooler than earning one imo ;-)
