Have you pressed it? I'm waiting to get a good time, so I'm a none-presser of this time.
I should think a few of you would find the pointless hype annoying, but I'm generally excited by it. It's a interesting social experiment too.
I think it's just a fun gimmick. Like when they divided reddit into the two the "armies" - periwinkle and orangered. At first I had doubts whether it's an actual representation of mouse clicks, or if it's just simulating the data. However it does appear to be making API calls in sync with the number refreshing, and the participant rate of change increases during peak hours.
I was originally a little bit hesitant of Revolution because I thought there was no realistic explanation for electricity to just stop, but once they explain it, it actually seems viable. So there is a button now? Hmm... your story doesn't add up. :PThe button on Lost probably does nothing, it's just a mind game 😉!
I wonder if it's similar to Curiosity. The last user to click the button wins, Ellen Pao appears and (in the style of Peter Molyneux) makes a very pretentious video where she over-promises and declares that the winner will become the 'God of Reddit' for 6 months and get 1% of the site's profits.
What I've seen in /r/thebutton so far: - People quickly dividing into pressers and non-pressers thanks to the flairs - Non-pressers holding firmly to their abstinence, wanting to see what happens when the timer runs out - Pressers urging to-be future pressers to not press so early, or the number of valid user accounts who can push it will run out - Other pressers boasting how low of a timer they got before they pressed ("Hey lookatme I'm a 50s-er") - Some curious folks wondering what the button actually does by peeking into the code - Some other curious folks actually logging down the timer refreshes for science - Many speculating on these button shenanigans All in all I think reddit just proved that the community can rally behind even imaginary causes - or at least they're very good at playing the roles. Oh and that there will be people who would do everything to get to the bottom of even a seemingly silly thing like a button with a timer.
