A personal friend of mine. He's revitalized the local community only to be crucified on trumped up charges. He scares the old money buying up every property in this new Bohemia so these coonasses sent the bulls after him. Spanish Town used to be Skid Row before people like him began putting their heart in it and now that it's hip all the wealthy posers want to take over and shit all over it. Pisses me off to no end.

Utter and total bullshit, I'm entirely sympathetic to your friend, and I hope this settles out quickly.

Because that's pretty much the happy ending. 6oz of weed in states where weed ain't legal is carte blanche for the cops to make dire trouble for you. It's 6x what's legal in WA and CO. It's still under what's legal in CA with a card but a brief glance at LA's laws leads me to believe the prudent move is to cop to possession right quick and move the hell on.

And then not smoke weed anymore. If the neighbors do have that big of a hard-on for him, he's kinda gotta operate like he's already breaking the law... and as a wise lawyer once told me, "never break more than one law at a time."

as a wise lawyer once told me, "never break more than one law at a time."

IF YOU BREAK THE LAW ROUTINELY, HUBSKI, LIVE BY THIS AXIOM.

This was told to me by my brother a very long time ago. It's a very good rule of thumb. Do I always obey it? Nope, I suck. Can you skate by without obeying it? Yes, sure, for a while at least. But I'd say you open yourself up to discovery (and trouble) exponentially when you start breaking law in multiples.

I grew up in the desert. Keggers were at the end of long, winding dirt roads. All party spots had names. The amount of alcohol present was generally in direct proportion to the distance driven from pavement. Seemed to run about 2 cases per mile, rough approximation - one could expect to find roughly 5 cases (plus BYOB) at Pumice Mines, 2 1/2 miles from where the pavement ends.

The location for the senior campout, as pioneered by my graduating class, was called "BFE." BFE was an hour and a half into the mountains by pavement followed by approximately 45 minutes via dirt clear across two jurisdictions. It was literally in deep enough that if you left the party drunk you'd be sober by the time you hit tarmac.

Unfortunately the class after mine had no senior campout. The organizers, irritated by the amount of time necessary to get to BFE, decided to speed across a Reservation with 40 cases and 5 kegs in the back of a van. There was even a picture of the bust with a hilariously understated caption in the yearbook.

-Same story where I grew up. On FB, they're trying to plan our 20th reunion (yes, I am old) and people started throwing out names from our HS party spots: "The Bitch, The Silo, Harley Hills" etc.

What was great is that we could bet broken up by the cops and yell out "go to the Bitch," and they'd have no idea what we meant.

The deck is stacked against that. The contemporary legal jurisprudence in the US is "scare suspect with 15 trumped up charge to get them to plea bargain" which has come laws that criss-cross each other to give the state the advantage at every turn.

There is no way to only break one law at a time when the Rule of Man is the jurisdiction instead of Rule of Law.

A personal favorite of these stories is the media and police effort at building the person up into some drug kingpin every time. Yet anyone with even the smallest amount of knowledge on the subject knows how absurd the claims levied usually are. 10 tabs of LSD and 6oz of weed is the financial equivalent of buying a new MacBook, bout $1k.

We both know that if you were busted with that much weed you'd be in Guantanamo by Tuesday.

I'll say this: it was the 2nd year of Clinton 1. Back then, "terrorists" were white and had names like Randy Weaver, Tim McVeigh and "The Montana Freemen." Meth wasn't a thing, coke was on the wane and it was New Mexico skunk weed which means it took damn near a quarter bag to get a high.

That said, the one thing I've learned from Los Angeles is that it really does suck to be black.

I thought I understood racism growing up in NM. NM is a highly segregated place where the hispanics hate the gringos, the indians hate the gringos, but the indians hate the hispanics and the hispanics hate the indians more than either of them hate the gringos. Blacks? Well there's about as many Eskimos so any emotions you may have are largely academic. Asians? Those are white people with funny accents. Middle Easterners? Are you sure they aren't hispanic? 'cuz they look hispanic. Meanwhile, "hispanic" was the ruling game in town because lots of the hispanic families in NM got their land grants from the King of Spain back in the 1500s so LOL at your 1776 "bicentennial." There were plenty of restaurants I couldn't eat at in NM 'cuz I was white. Pink skin was a liability in a traffic stop. Solidarity brother and all that.

Seattle wasn't much better: the Native Americans (don't call them "native Americans" in NM, don't call them "Indians" in the Pacific Northwest) had always had it sweet up there and by the time the white conquerers came to town they were pretty much playing by the book. none of this shove-off-your-land stuff up there; in WA the government bought it. Native American fishing rights are off-the-hook and while there's poverty on the reservations there's also ample opportunity to get off the reservations. Lots of immigrants but they tended to be Russians, Poles, Serbians, Croatians... you know, white people. And Asians but a lot of them were tech. So it wasn't a "terk er jerbs" sort of problem because nobody came from Viet Nam to run a lathe for Boeing, they came for Microsoft and you couldn't do their job with a gun to your head.

LA, though...

I mean, I'm no longer surprised when I see a SWAT team and a ghettocopter circling a black woman and a baby. Eric Garner makes total sense. Westchester is actually a pretty nice place but to the fine white folx of Los Angeles it's HOLY SHIT GHETTO. Ever been to Compton? Compton's actually pretty nice - SpaceX is actually headquartered in Hawthorne which is effectively Compton. Frickin' Wierd Al grew up in Lynwood which isn't quite as nice as Compton. And the entire San Fernando Valley was populated when the gentle white liberals of Los Angeles couldn't handle the idea of their lily-white kids going to school with those kids from Compton.

Never mind the Hispanics. They aren't even an underclass, they're Untouchables straight out of devout Hinduism. They don't speak your language, they don't listen to your radio, they don't watch your television, they don't shop at your stores. Yeah, they're in the same traffic as you but that's all the more reason for you to buy a Merc so that the cops know you're white. I got pulled over once simply for driving a Dodge and having a pony tail. Soon as the cop recognized I was whiter than him his voice cracked and he no shit APOLOGIZED.

You wanna know why Crash got an Oscar? Because Oscar voters are white males in their 50s and 60s and they wanted to feel bad about the race problems in Los Angeles without actually having to do something. They wanted to be able to keep making Tyler Perry jokes and stick to their safe enclaves while safely acknowledging the problem for another day by striking their blow for KONY2012.

It's good to be white. I wish it were good to be human. In some places it's less good to be white but black president or no, we've got a ways to go yet.

I'm sure with Louis CK being as popular as he is that you and eightbitsamurai have both probably seen this. But I have to share it again, because this bit gets to the core of why I think Louis is as good he is. He elucidated modern day whiteness and racism in two and a half minutes, and this was 2006, which, while not forever ago, was before this whole apogee of racial tension. I can't help but shake my fucking head at any white man (Fox News et al.) on the television saying, in full seriousness, that white privilege doesn't exist, that a cop doesn't think twice about putting his finger on a trigger when he sees a white face, that there aren't reams of data and research on unconscious and implicit bias (link to a PDF), etc. etc.

"I'm not saying that white people are better. I'm saying that being white is clearly better, who could even argue?!"

URLs become links. However, new users cannot post links in comments.

Hubski URLS become embedded cards, displaying information about the post or comment.

Text can link to URLs by using the following format: [linked text](http://theurl.com)

Youtube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, Twitter, and Spotify urls will embed the content automatically.

Image URLs (.png, .tif, .gif, and .jpg) will embed automatically.
