How disappointing. Of all the things I've been bitter about as technology progresses, the destruction of the fourth estate is the one that pangs me the most. I'm not going to say that the NYT is some great paper, but it's definitely a symbol of a bygone era. I've worked for several different papers, online and print, and it's simply not a sustainable medium anymore. The institutions are having a lot of trouble adapting, and I hope they either figure it out, or a respectable replacement comes along. Huffington Post sure as shit isn't covering it. Sigh. I'm going to go back to watching the Newsroom and daydreaming about reclaiming the fourth estate.
I think it would be inaccurate to say people aren't reading the NYT in some form of media. The problem is more that not enough people are paying for it to make up for the cost of the pre established structure. The entity is too big, as opposed to the entity has no use.
