You are only using global and thereby seeing EVERYTHING on Hubski. Use your feed if you want content specific to what/who you are following.

Also, if you want a fire-hose of content then Hubski isn't where you want to be. Things move more slowly here and also, we tend to have conversations that can last days, weeks and even months. Dive in to a tag that interests you and go back through older submissions. Just because it says "submitted a week ago" doesn't make the content any less engaging.

So grave-digging isn't bad form?

thenewgreen  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'm not sure what you mean by "grave digging," but it certainly isn't bad form to back through older posts and engage the content/conversations if you have something to ad. Also, I highly suggest reading the Primer.

On most sites resurrecting old posts by posting or sharing them is frowned upon. I guess that is what he means by gravedigging. The fact that that is allowed is probably my favorite thing with hubski.

thenewgreen  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

I'm glad you like that aspect. It's one of the harder things to get new users accustomed to because so many other places frown upon it. It's as if there's an expiration date on whether something is or is not worth discussing. -crazy.

Another thing people can't wrap their heads around at first is that it is encouraged for content creators/artists etc to share their own content openly. Personal Content Is Not A Sin!. -This works, because if someone shares their own work that you find annoying or even spammy, you can ignore them.

Thanks for the gravedigging definition. I appreciate it.

One thing that's bothering me already is people putting the reddit tag on my posts since the majority of users are ignoring it.

It's like a little clique or group, and if you don't fit in, they'll ostracize you. It's happened twice now, and on posts that have nothing to do with reddit.

thenewgreen  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

A lot of people ignore the #reddit tag because they're not interested in hearing the same questions again and again. Therefore, some of us will give the community tag of "reddit" to a post with a #newtohubski vibe. You shouldn't take offense to this, it's not a way to "shame" anyone, it's a way to help curate. If you stick around on the site, you'll appreciate this in a few months when the next wave of new users comes in and you're a seasoned pro :)

noeatnosleep  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

I get that.

It's much more appropriate to use the 'hide' functionality, instead of ganging up on folks with what is essentially a user-aggregated ban.

swedishbadgergirl  ·  3904 days ago  ·  link  ·

I don't think that they mean anything bad by it honestly, but it does feel kind of bad when people are annoyed at users like you (and me).

thenewgreen  ·  3904 days ago  ·  link  ·

For the record, I'm pretty sure that I'm the one that tagged it as such. I didn't do it out of annoyance, I'm glad to meet the both of you. Truly. It's a way to help curate and keep the influx of such questions separate from those that don't wish to participate in conversations about things they likely are already aware of -site mechanics etc. These questions largely come from new redditors. Hence the tag.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all as you use the site.

swedishbadgergirl  ·  3904 days ago  ·  link  ·

I think it's a good idea. It keeps those that would be annoyed enough to complain and such out of the thread to so it makes it better for us to.

thenewgreen  ·  3904 days ago  ·  link  ·

That is a good point and a great way of looking at it.

_refugee_  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

Look, no one on this site is going to tell someone else what to do. I think your perception of "being ganged up on" is a little over the top. There's nothing personal about it. No one is saying "oh look at that newbie noeatnosleep, he must be for reddit, we're going to follow him around and tag his posts with #reddit."

I'm just saying, don't expect a mod post - we don't have mods - saying "Hey guys don't tag things whatever you want." It's not really how we work.

noeatnosleep  ·  3904 days ago  ·  link  ·

OK? We can do whatever we want here, which means it's OK for me to be frustrated that my posts are getting tag-banned.

_refugee_  ·  3904 days ago  ·  link  ·

Feel free to look at it that way!

thenewgreen  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

No "ganging up" about it my friend, it's curation and that's it. I hope you feel welcome, honestly.

noeatnosleep  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

Correct. And agreed.

noeatnosleep  ·  3905 days ago  ·  link  ·

Yes, that's what gravedigging is, and it's frowned upon in most places. Just fine with me though, gravedigging hasn't ever bothered me a bit.

I just finished the primer.
