So I'm listening to On the Corner by Miles Davis. Apparently this album was discarded by critics originally, but then turned into a trailblazer for Hip Hop, Post Punk, and electronica. There are no doubt tons of albums in history that have gotten the same treatment and ended up breaking ground. On the Corner is mine, who's got some more?

I can forgive the yoko tracks for this song. Double Fantasy actually won the grammy for album of the year, but that's likely because John was killed 3 weeks after it's release. Prior to his death the album was trashed by critics, rightly so imo. If you just have the John tracks it's a great album but lets be honest, the Yoko tracks destroy it. It's not like there's just Yoko singing background on "Bungalo Bill", she's got her own screechy, crumby songs on Double Fantasty. That said, songs like Woman and Beautiful Boy are amazing. Hell, even this song is great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4rBsbL0M6k What do you think ? I happen to know that you're a pretty big Beatles fan too. You have Double Fantasy on vinyl?

Off the top of my head, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is definitely in this category. They made the album, their label dropped them, they fired a band member, put the album online for cheap anyway, it took off and made them famous - fan base style.

This album didn't get bad reviews but it's often lost in the shuffle of amazing work Radioheads done. I'm referring to The Bends. It's a great, great rock album. It's the genius of Radiohead in familiar song structures driven by crunchy guitars and piercing vocals. In subsequent albums, the band would experiment with sounds and song structures in a way that no popular band ever has but The Bends remains my personal favorite Radiohead album. I guess it's sort of the opposite of your question though...it's my favorite because it didn't break ground which is why it's largely discarded these days.
